It shows a possible new form of engagement not only in the author’s own work but also in Yugoslav literature in general. The initial hypothesis of this paper is that Maksimović – by intentionally choosing the genre of thethesis novel, and by shaping (consciously or unconsciously) the genre ofder Arztroman or the medical novel – takes part in a tradition of popular genres which hybridizes enlightenment with entertainment. The aims of this paper are a) to define the given genres and place The Open Window within the traditions mentioned above; b) to define and analyze the novel’s representation of tuberculosis; c) to explain how the author placed the subject of this contagious disease and its epidemic spread throughout the Kingdom of Yugoslavia into the frame of the debate between conservative and emancipatory social movements.Zaangażowana powieść medyczna Desanki Maksimović Otwarte okno (1954). Gruźlica jako problem socjal(istycz)nyOtwarte okno (1954) to powieść cenionej przez krytykę poetki Desanki Maksimović, która wpisuje się w nurt pisanych przez nią przed wojną zaangażowanych społecznie opowiadań. Powieść wyznacza nie tylko nowy kierunek zaangażowania autorki w obrębie jej własnej twórczości, lecz także w literaturze jugosłowiańskiej w ogóle. Wstępna hipoteza artykułu jest taka, że Maksimović – wybierając gatunek powieści z tezą i (świadomie lub nie) kształtując gatunek der Arztroman czy też powieści medycznej – wpisuje się w tradycję gatunków popularnych, które łączą naukę z rozrywką. Celem artykułu jest: a) zdefiniowanie danych gatunków i umiejscowienie Otwartego okna w ramach wymienionych tradycji; b) zdefiniowanie i przeanalizowanie obrazu gruźlicy w powieści; c) wyjaśnienie, w jaki sposób autorka wpisała temat tej zakaźnej choroby i jej epidemii w Królestwie Jugosławii w ramy debaty między konserwatywnymi i emancypacyjnymi ruchami społecznymi.","PeriodicalId":40289,"journal":{"name":"Slavia Meridionalis","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2022-12-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48057736","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the focus of our interpretation are three novels of contemporary Macedonian literature (Luan Starova’s Balkanvavilonci, Dragi Mihajlovski’s Mojot Skenderbej and Blazhe Minevski’s Nishan), which are paradigmatic in two ways: 1. they refer to historical events and figures, thus confirming that history is the basic mechanism for the argumentation of stereotypical images; 2. they depict processes of destereotyping both thematically and structurally, but also by their appearance in a particular sociohistorical context, with the aim of promoting supranational, universal, human, civilizational, and cultural values such as love, empathy, forgiveness, dialogue, tolerance, education, love of books, optimism, humaneness, all of which are usually treated as originally European values. Literature, by articulating the processes of destereotyping through the narrative strategies in the works, confirms that it holds the potential to act correctively on systems where different forms of power are based on discrimination and submission. Rola literatury w procesach destereotypizacji (na przykładach z literatury macedońskiej)Przedmiotem tekstu jest analiza roli literatury w dekonstrukcji stereotypów krążących w komunikacji między bałkańskimi sąsiadami z perspektywy imagologicznych koncepcji Innego autorstwa Daniela-Henri Pageau i Gordany Đerić. W centrum uwagi znajdują się trzy powieści zaliczane do współczesnej literatury macedońskiej (Balkanvavilonci Luany Starovy, Mojot Skenderbej Dragiego Mihajlovskiego, Nishan Blaže Minevskiego). Są one paradygmatyczne z dwóch względów: 1. odwołują się do wydarzeń i postaci historycznych, czym potwierdzają, że historia jest podstawowym mechanizmem argumentacji obrazów o charakterze stereotypowym; 2. ujawniają procesy destereotypizacji zarówno pod względem tematycznym, jak i strukturalnym, a też przez zaktualizowanie określonego kontekstu społeczno-historycznego, co służy promowaniu wartości ponadnarodowych, uniwersalnych, ludzkich, cywilizacyjnych i kulturowych, takich jak miłość, empatia, przebaczenie, dialog, tolerancja, edukacja, miłość do książek, optymizm, humanitaryzm, traktowanych jako wartości fundamentalnie europejskie. Potwierdza to, że artykułując procesy desterotypizacji przez strategie narracyjne, literatura ma potencjał do działania korygującego w systemach, w których różne formy władzy oparte są na dyskryminacji i uległości.","PeriodicalId":40289,"journal":{"name":"Slavia Meridionalis","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2022-12-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43870663","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

His conceptions are analysed through the lens of modernist theories of nation and nationalism, with special emphasis on the following aspects: nation as a historically and socially formed construct, a sense of common belonging, high cultures and standardized languages as the political legitimacy of a nation, the role of cultural elites in the nation-building process, and the relationship between the nation and the modern state.Refleksje nad teorią Krste Misirkova. [The Lexicon of Migrating Ideas in the Slavic Balkans (18th-21st centuries)] (2018–2020). These events were held in 2021, during the COVID-19 pandemic, by means of social media and common communication platforms. As the Lexicon consists of many synthetically expressed, original, and source-based insights on the southern Slavic cultures’ struggles with modernity, the author comments on both the research project at the root of this publication and on the course of the discussion which emerged during these meetings. She does so in order to express her view on the capacity of the modern researcher by adapting Olga Tokarczuk’s notion of the tender narrator.Leksykon idei wędrownych na słowiańskich Bałkanach a ryzyko wiedzy. Kulavkova","doi":"10.11649/sm.2710","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.11649/sm.2710","url":null,"abstract":"Panoptic Vision of the World: Can a State of Emergency Become a Regular One?The object of interpretation of this text is several social aspects of the Coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 pandemic which have equivocal and contradictory meanings: state of emergency/crisis, emergency measures, civil and human rights/restrictions to human rights, freedom/limitation of freedom. The basic interpretative and conceptual tools used are the terms ‘panopticon’ and ‘panopticism’, whose archetypal patterns point to systematic and systemic damage to the universal human rights to freedom and privacy. This damage occurs by legalizing the surveillance and control of citizens, thus becoming more akin to radical surveillance. The pandemic is seen as an excuse to renew the panoptic vision of the world. The contemporary pandemic surveillance of citizens dissolves the boundaries between the real and the virtual and creates new boundaries of freedom on several levels: movement, speech, work, communication, existence. Some of these limitations of human rights and freedoms relate to the elderly population. This analysis shows the danger of prolonging and legalizing emergency measures in circumstances when, realistically, there is no state of emergency. This poses a question: can a state of emergency become a regular state? The New Normal has the power to create alienated individuals and an alienated society.Panoptyczna wizja świata. Czy stan wyjątkowy może stać się normalnym?Przedmiotem uwagi jest kilka aspektów społecznych pandemii koronawirusa SARS-CoV-2, które mają niejednoznaczne i sprzeczne znaczenia: stan wyjątkowy / kryzys, środki nadzwyczajne, prawa obywatelskie i prawa / ograniczenia praw człowieka, wolność / ograniczenie wolności. Podstawowymi narzędziami interpretacyjnymi i pojęciowymi są terminy „panoptykon” i „panoptycyzm”, których archetypowe wzorce wskazują na systematyczne i systemowe niszczenie uniwersalnych praw człowieka do wolności i prywatności. Ta szkoda pojawia się poprzez legalizację nadzoru i kontroli obywateli, przez co staje się bardziej zbliżona do radykalnej inwigilacji. Pandemia jest postrzegana jako pretekst do odnowienia panoptycznej wizji świata. Współczesny pandemiczny nadzór nad obywatelami zaciera granice między tym, co realne, a tym, co wirtualne i tworzy nowe granice wolności na kilku poziomach: ruchu, mowy, pracy, komunikacji, egzystencji. Niektóre z tych ograniczeń praw i wolności człowieka dotyczą osób starszych. Analiza pokazuje niebezpieczeństwo przedłużenia i legalizacji środków nadzwyczajnych w sytuacji, gdy realnie nie ma stanu wyjątkowego. Powstaje pytanie: czy stan wyjątkowy może stać się stanem normalnym? It focuses on the mid-war period and the opinions that strengthen the antithesis Serbia – (Slavia) – Europe, rooted mostly in a modernized (at the time) version of the Russian Slavophile thought. It juxtaposes a basic topos of Europe (in the messianic and missionary version) as “the rotten West” with the concepts of Serbian organicists. Clear anti-European and anti-Western reflections can be found in many contemporary attempts to redefine the native tradition and also in more modern, updated opinions of Serbian intellectuals active at the end of the 1990s. In many opinions under discussion this tradition is seen as “un-European”, as being a synthesis of cultural motifs of the East and the West or as the emanation of the Pan-Slavonic idea.Refleksy antyokcydentalizmu w serbskich tekstach kultury XX wiekuArtykuł wskazuje na najbardziej reprezentatywne teksty kultury oraz opinie intelektualistów serbskich XX wieku, które ukształtowały (częściowo na wcześniejszych podstawach) nurt antyokcydentalny. Szczególną uwagę poświęcono okresowi międzywojennemu i opiniom utrwalającym antytezę Serbia – (Slavia) – Europa, a wyrastającym głównie ze zaktualizowanej wówczas rosyjskiej myśli słowianofilskiej. Jej podstawowy (w wersji mesjanistyczno-misjonistycznej) topos Europy – „zgniłego Zachodu” został w tym stadium rozwojowym skompilowany z konceptami serbskich organicystów. Wyraziste antyeuropejskie i szerzej antyokcydentalne refleksy znaleźć można w wielu ówczesnych próbach redefinicji tradycji rodzimej, ale także w nowszych, aktualizujących je opiniach reprezentantów serbskiego świata intelektualnego z końca lat 90. XX wieku. W wielu z omawianych ujęć tradycja ta postrzegana jest jako „nieeuropejska” bądź stanowiąca syntezę wątków kulturowych Wschodu i Zachodu, czy też emanację idei wszechsłowiańskiej.","PeriodicalId":40289,"journal":{"name":"Slavia Meridionalis","volume":"46 2","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2022-12-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"41286081","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Right at the very beginning of the pandemic, Slovenian philosopher Slavoj Žižek published a monograph about his thoughts on the first few weeks of the new situation. In it, he presents both his personal experience of the pandemic and his opinions on the overall changes that it might subsequently bring forth. As many times before, he once again calls for a new global order, basing his calls on the faults of the current system that the pandemic revealed in their entirety. He calls that world order “new communism” rooting it primarily in the need for solidarity and more executive power given to global organisations such as the World Health Organisation, as well as a more active role of the state during crises. This paper examines the much-debated crisis in the humanities and poses questions on its course in the light of the global COVID-19 pandemic. It argues that the COVID-19 pandemic might be an opportunity for reflections that may lead to changes in higher education that aim to revive humanistic research, which provides people with tools such as critical thinking, which has proved to be crucial in times of crisis, like pandemics. We consider the example of the Faculty of Philology at the University of Belgrade, the most prominent place for language, culture and literature research in Serbia, as this is an institution that faces many challenges, primarily a decline in enrolment in certain programmes. Finally, we analyse this Faculty’s strategies to cope with both internal and external problems and to revitalize the interest of prospective students in philological studies.
