Con­ducted within the theoretical framework of Critical Metaphor Analysis (CMA), the analysis establishes that The Economist constructs the EU’s image through a DISEASE-centred metaphoric scenario. The EU is represented as ILL, SUFFERING FROM A DISEASE, SUFFERING NEGATIVE EFFECTS OF A DISEASE, and REQUIRING TREAT­MENT. Hence three elements of the metaphorical scenario are identified here: SYMP­TOMS – EFFECTS – TREATMENT. Furthermore, in the samples analysed, the writers avoid evoking EU’s FUTURE RECOVERY, despite the presence of their thorough analysis of the EU measures taken to secure such. On the basis of a selection of representative units and clause frames, the analysis points out contrasts between (a) North and South (in particular, Balkan) Slavic and (b) volition- and cognition-oriented utterances, which distinguish (i) diverse kinds of illocutions and (ii) clauses coding states of affairs (i.e. mere events) vs propositions (i.e. events with specific anchorage in space and time). The discussion unavoidably raises issues of irrealis marking and asks for the diagnostics of ‘subordination’ (embedding), in particular whether left-edge elements can by themselves be regarded as complementizers even if, under specific circumstances, subordination has to be assumed.\u0000 \u0000Spójniki inicjalne w zdaniach składowych, związane i niezwiązane. Wskaźniki trybu, podrzędności czy czegoś bardziej fundamentalnego?\u0000Artykuł stanowi kompleksowe omówienie dystynkcji, które w różnych tradycjach językoznawczych są związane z pojęciami „trybu” i „włącznika”, w szczególności w związku z potencjalnymi wyrazami pomocniczymi „analitycznego trybu (nieindykatywnego)”. Na podstawie wyboru reprezentatywnych jednostek i ram zdań składowych analiza wskazuje na różnice między (a) językami północno- i południowosłowiańskimi (w szczególności bałkanosłowiańskimi) oraz (b) wypowiedziami ufundowanymi na woli i poznaniu, które rozróżniają (i)różne rodzaje illokucji oraz (ii) zdania składowe kodujące stany rzeczy (tj. zwykłe sytuacje) i sądy (tj. zdarzenia o określonym zakotwiczeniu w przestrzeni i czasie). The study reveals the features of verbs of smell emission and characterizes their semantic shifts in the Polish and Ukrainian languages. We posit that a linguistic item’s semantic paradigm development aligns with situation concept extensions, which are supposed to be determined by the changes participants undergo within source-to-target-situation shifts. The semantic shifts construed by Polish and Ukrainian verbs of smell emission suggest the regular direction of concept extensions – from an internal domain (a situation of smell emission and its perception) via an adjacent one (smell identification) towards an external (smell interpretation) domain.\u0000 \u0000Strategie derywacji semantycznej czasowników emisji zapachu w języku polskim i ukraińskim\u0000W artykule skupiono się na strategiach derywacji semantycznej czasowników emisji zapachu – słów oznaczających sytuację wydzielania zapachu i jego percepcji. W pracy ukazano cechy czasowników emisji zapachu oraz scharakteryzowano ich zmiany semantyczne w języku polskim i ukraińskim. Rozszerzenia pojęcia sytuacji emisji zapachu są zdeterminowane przez zmiany charakterystyk uczestników sytuacji. Specifically, it addresses the question of whether there exist predefined patterns and diachronic trends that affect words in terms of their prosodic and morphosyntactic strength. The paper investigates two classes of functional elements, auxiliary verbs and pronominal clitics, showing that they have undergone diachronic changes in opposite directions: while auxiliaries have weakened, pronominal forms have become strengthened in some Slavic languages.\u0000 \u0000Bezkierunkowość zmian językowych. The study offers the first overview and outline of the pedagogical approaches used to teach mathematics through mathematical term formation in that period based on the text of school mathematics books. The analysis includes a comparative description of the approach and study content as well as related topics and exercises connected to them. According to the authors, the application of the basic theoretical assumptions of linguistic confrontation will make it possible to create tools for comparing linguistic images of the world. It is a very high frequency of using forms that express the veracity reserve. This shows how much the authors of the notes wanted to emphasise their own reserve to the truthfulness of the content provided by the confidential human sources (CHS).\u0000 \u0000Wyrażanie rezerwy prawdziwościowej w aktach tajnych służb Polskiej Rzeczypospolitej Ludowej i Ludowej Republiki Bułgarii (na przykładzie akt TW Bolka i TW Sabiny)\u0000Analiza języka służb bezpieczeństwa Polskiej Republiki Ludowej i Ludowej Republiki Bułgarii przeprowadzona na podstawie tzw. teczek TW Bolek i TW Sabina wykazała, że istnieje pewna cecha, która pojawia się w obydwu dokumentach niezwykle często, mimo że w tekstach administracyjnych i prawnych jej występowanie powinno być sporadyczne. Tą cechą jest duża częstotliwość występowania form wyrażających rezerwę prawdziwościową. Bourdieu, and not only from the perspective of the history of ideas and cultural imagery. Humanistic biography, studied from the perspective of social practices, is a tool for studying the strategies undertaken by individual actors. I understand biography here as a specific social construct, not as a typical rhetorical genre of the Renaissance. This allows an attempt to create an interpretive model that can help in comparative studies of the functioning of cultural elites during the humanist period. In the article, I analyse biographies of authors such as Vergerio the Elder, Janus Pannonius and Paul Skalich, who came from areas peripheral to the cultural and political centres of the time. In the article, I analyse their choices to gain an important position in the field. I argue that excellence in the use of Latin and a predilection for Roman monuments are not only expressions of a shared taste, but they also represent the competence necessary to gain and maintain a position. Perfect Latin is also a barrier to accessing the resources of the field, and researching Rome’s legacy or collecting antiquities makes it possible to create networks that support mobility in the field. The three cases studied not only allow some features of a model to be proposed but also prompt looking at the relationship between Italian centres and non-Italian peripheries through the prism of not only influence but also rivalry.\u0000 \u0000Humaniści z peryferii. Biografie profesjonalne humanistów w perspektywie logiki pola\u0000Humanizm może być badany z perspektywy logiki pola, a nie tylko z perspektywy historii idei i wyobrażeń kulturowych. Biografia humanistyczna, badana z perspektywy praktyk społecznych według Bourdieu, jest narzędziem do badania strategii podejmowanych przez poszczególnych aktorów. Biografię rozumiem tu jako specyficzny konstrukt społeczny, a nie jako typowy dla renesansu gatunek retoryczny. Pozwala to na próbę stworzenia modelu interpretacyjnego, który może być pomocny w badaniach porównawczych nad funkcjonowaniem elit kulturowych w okresie humanizmu. W artykule przedstawiam biografie autorów takich jak Petrus Paulus Vergerius Starszy, Janus Pannonius i Paulus Scalichius, którzy pochodzili z obszarów peryferyjnych w stosunku do ówczesnych centrów kulturowych i politycznych. W artykule analizuję ich wybory, których celem było zdobycie znaczącej pozycji wśród ówczesnych elit politycznych. Argumentuję, że doskonałość w posługiwaniu się łaciną i upodobanie do rzymskich zabytków były nie tylko wyrazem wspólnego gustu, ale także znakiem kompetencji niezbędnych do zdobycia i utrzymania pozycji. {"title":"Asyndetic Complementation in the Light of Explicative Syntax (Exemplified with Bulgarian, Polish and Ukrainian)","authors":"Aleksander Kiklewicz","doi":"10.11649/sm.2948","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.11649/sm.2948","url":null,"abstract":"Asyndetic Complementation in the Light of Explicative Syntax (Exemplified with Bulgarian, Polish and Ukrainian)\u0000The subject of the study is Bulgarian, Polish and Ukrainian syntactic constructions in which the position of the clausal complement is realized in an asyndetic manner. The analysis of language material is based on the theory of explicative syntax, the foundations of which were developed by S. Karolak. The author shows that the asyndetic complement is one of the forms of realization of the propositional argument that is conditioned by the valence of the matrix verb. A given syntactic form is a valence characteristic of a limited group of semantic classes of verb, namely mental, emotive, perceptive and deliberative verbs. The author also shows that there are other factors that favor or, conversely, do not favor the use of conjunctionless sentences, such as negation, ellipsis, coreference, and others. The author concludes that the frequency of asyndetic constructions in Slavic languages can vary.\u0000 \u0000Komplementacja asyndetyczna w świetle składni eksplikacyjnej (na przykładzie języka bułgarskiego, polskiego i ukraińskiego)\u0000Przedmiotem badania są bułgarskie, polskie i ukraińskie konstrukcje składniowe, w których pozycja dopełnienia klauzulowego jest realizowana w sposób asyndetyczny. Analiza materiału językowego opiera się na teorii składni eksplikatywnej, której podstawy opracował S. Karolak. Autor pokazuje, że dopełnienie asyndetyczne jest jedną z form realizacji argumentu propozycjonalnego, uwarunkowaną walencją czasownika matrycowego. Dana forma składniowa stanowi charakterystykę walencyjną ograniczonej grupy semantycznej czasowników, a mianowicie czasowników mentalnych, emotywnych, percepcyjnych i deliberatywnych. Autor pokazuje również, że istnieją inne czynniki, które sprzyjają lub odwrotnie nie sprzyjają używaniu zdań bezspójnikowych, takie jak: negacja, elipsa, koreferencja.
