Se sostiene que tres características definen este espacio teatral: continuidad, invisibilidad y artificio. La primera hace referencia al hecho de que lo que ocurre detrás del telón afecta al desarrollo de lo representado en la escena. La invisibilidad se asocia a un factor en el que Galdós hace hincapié: los resortes del poder permanecen ocultos al gran público. Por otra parte, la continuidad hace referencia a que el espacio teatral se divide entre el espacio de la escena y el espacio que ocurre entre bastidores, detrás de la escena, pero los acontecimientos que suceden tras el telón quedan ocultos. De este modo, para Galdós el teatro y su artificiosidad son fiel reflejo de los tejemanejes políticos de la corte: hay que ser un buen actor, conocerse bien el papel, seguir los consejos del director, y sobre todo, saberse mover entre bastidores. En suma, el género novelístico y la inclusión de este clásico del Bardo le sirven a Galdós como vehículos idóneos para criticar el hermetismo y la corrupción de la corte de los Borbones españoles.Abstract:This article studies the role of Othello in La corte de Carlos IV, proposing that it functions as a metaphor for the national politics of the time. It is argued that three characteristics define this theatrical space: continuity, invisibility and artificiality. The first refers to the fact that what happens behind the curtain affects the development of what is represented on the scene. Invisibility is associated with a factor that Galdós greatly emphasizes: the sources of power remain hidden from the general public. Second, continuity refers to the idea that the theatrical space is divided between the space of the scene and the space of what occurs behind the scenes, but the events that happen behind the curtain remain hidden. Finally, artificiality: that is, Maravall's idea that the politics of Spain is a \"great theater of the world.\" This mechanism allows Galdós a distancing effect, giving Spanish politics an aura of artificiality. Thus, for Galdós theater and its artificiality are a faithful reflection of the political intrigues of the Court: you need to be a good actor, know your role well, follow the director's directions, and above all, know how to move behind the scenes. In sum, the novelistic genre and the inclusion of this classic by the Bard serve Galdós as perfect vehicles to criticize the secrecy and corruption of the Spanish Bourbon Court.","PeriodicalId":40152,"journal":{"name":"Anales Galdosianos","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.3,"publicationDate":"2021-12-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46397694","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

El autor concede centralidad a dichas enfermedades para conectarlas con los cambios que se originan en la manera de ser poco convencional de las madres. Desde la perspectiva masculina, la relevancia del instinto materno se traduce en una de las cualidades que conforman el modelo de domesticidad, vigente en personajes tan distantes como el intelectual León Roch y el hedonista José María Bueno de Guzmán. Modelo en el que, sin embargo, tanto Pepa como Camila introducirán importantes variaciones. Las descripciones detalladas de las enfermedades de niños de corta edad, incluyendo la muerte en uno de los casos, trascienden el costumbrismo en dichas novelas, y ponen de manifiesto una mentalidad general en torno a la mujer muy arraigada en la sociedad de la época.Abstract:The goal of this paper is to examine the representations of childhood disease that appear in two of Galdós's novels from different periods, La familia de León Roch (1878) and Lo prohibido (1884-85). Through the characters Pepa Fúcar and Camila, respectively, the author positions childhood illnesses at the center of the novels, connecting disease with changes originating from their mothers' unconventional natures. Both novels also demonstrate maternal instinct as central to the mainstream domestic model of femininity, upheld by characters as different as the intellectual León Roch and the hedonist José María Bueno de Guzmán. Nevertheless, both Pepa and Camila introduce major variations to this model. The detailed descriptions of childhood illnesses—and in one case, the death of an infant—transcend the \"costumbrista\" nature of the texts, revealing pervasive attitudes about women that were deeply rooted in the society of the time.","PeriodicalId":40152,"journal":{"name":"Anales Galdosianos","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.3,"publicationDate":"2021-12-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45218187","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

By revisiting this novel through the lens of the yellow fever outbreak in 1809, I suggest that Galdós offers a critique of nationalism through his incorporation of the epidemic in Zaragoza. In this novel, Galdós identifies a pathogenic condition intrinsic to nationalism, a lesson intended for his contemporaries, but one that still necessitates continued vigilance in the twenty-first century. Nationalism creates a belief in rigid borders that demarcate domestic territory. An epidemic undermines this imagined binary that separates exterior space from the interior as the virus easily crosses borders. In Galdós's novel, the inhabitants of Zaragoza project their exalted patriotism onto the border, imagining it as an impermeable boundary that protects the health and security of the collective body. However, as the Saragossans succumb to the disease, the outbreak initiates an internal social breakdown that turns the population against itself.Resumen:Este ensayo explora la significación del estallido epidémico en la novela Zaragoza (1874) de Benito Pérez Galdós, así como su contribución al nacionalismo construido a través de la reescritura de la Guerra de la Independencia en los Episodios nacionales. Sugiero que una aproximación a Zaragoza a través de la epidemia de la fiebre amarilla identifica una condición patogénica intrínseca al nacionalismo, una lección dirigida a los contemporáneos de Galdós que todavía sigue vigente, y que, en la actualidad, requiere continua vigilancia. El nacionalismo aboga por unas fronteras rígidas que circunscriben el territorio doméstico. Una epidemia socava el sistema binario imaginado que aísla el espacio exterior del interior, ya que el virus transgrede las fronteras con facilidad. En Zaragoza, los habitantes proyectan su patriotismo exaltado en las fronteras de la nación, insuflando en ellas un estatus de impermeabilidad que protege la salud y la seguridad de la colectividad. El fuerte patriotismo de los habitantes es concebido como una barrera protectora contra una invasión; sin embargo, cuando los ciudadanos se enferman, se inicia un proceso en el cual la población se ataca a sí misma, creando un desorden abrumador del cuerpo social.","PeriodicalId":40152,"journal":{"name":"Anales Galdosianos","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.3,"publicationDate":"2021-12-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43058239","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Este acontecimiento es indisociable del impacto de la epidemia del cólera en España durante el decenio de 1830. Como otros autores que escriben sobre los efectos de las epidemias en las sociedades europeas, Pérez Galdós construye una ambiciosa representación de estos acontecimientos resaltando el colapso de la autoridad durante los momentos iniciales de la crisis sanitaria, los obvios efectos económicos de la epidemia en los sectores sociales más vulnerables, una psicosis colectiva, el desarrollo de bulos o patrañas sobre el origen de la enfermedad y, eventualmente, la búsqueda de chivos expiatorios a los que responsabilizar de la epidemia. La singularidad de la interpretación galdosiana radica en que estos acontecimientos deben superponerse también a una reflexión pedagógica sobre los retos de la modernidad liberal española. Pérez Galdós utiliza los sucesos de 1834 para prevenir a los lectores españoles del último tercio del XIX sobre los peligros del faccionalismo y la intolerancia. El proyecto asumido por el autor postula un entendimiento satisfactorio entre las dos Españas mediante la adopción del ideario liberal-progresista forjado por la Revolución Gloriosa de 1868. Escribir sobre los acontecimientos de 1834, en definitiva, permite construir una interpretación histórica que postula los principios de la modernidad, el liberalismo y la tolerancia.Abstract:Benito Pérez Galdós represents in Un faccioso más y algunos frailes menos (1879) the events associated with the slaughter of friars in Madrid on July 17 and 18, 1834. This event is linked to the cholera pandemic that affected Spain during the 1830s. Pérez Galdós follows the lead of other authors who wrote about the impact of pandemics in Western societies. The pandemic produces the collapse of authority in the early moments of the health crisis, has a negative economic impact on the most vulnerable members of society, stimulates a collective psychosis, generates the rise of hoaxes and lies about the origin of the disease, and eventually results in the search for scapegoats to blame for the pandemic. The remarkable contribution of Pérez Galdós to literary representations of the effects of pandemics on society has to do with his pedagogical reflections on the challenges of liberal modernity in nineteenth-century Spain. His evaluation of the events of 1834 is used to create a liberal discourse for Spanish readers of the last quarter of the nineteenth century that warns of the dangers of factionalism and intolerance. Pérez Galdós argues for an understanding between between Spanish liberals and traditionalists that satisfies both parties under the progressive principles of the Glorious Revolution (1868). To write about 1834 therefore allows the author to offer a historical interpretation that de","PeriodicalId":40152,"journal":{"name":"Anales Galdosianos","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.3,"publicationDate":"2021-12-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46612732","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
