The Gothic-tinged short stories selected in this study, “Luisa” (1835; 1867) by Eugenio de Ochoa, “La dama de Amboto” (1858) by Gertrudis Gómez de Avellaneda, and “El monte de las ánimas” (1861) by Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer, all present examples of vengeful ghosts who haunt those responsible for their violent demise. By tracing the characterizations of these spirits across these three different stories from Spanish Romanticism and Post-Romanticism, this article reveals their gendered presentations of revenge, similarities in the portrayals of the spirits and their motives, and an analogous, frightening plot arc that underscores the conventions of the era and the popularity of the Gothic mode.Resumen:Las influencias góticas son abundantes en la ficción romántica española de la mitad del siglo XIX, especialmente por el uso de tramas y personajes fantásticos, críticos como demuestran Xavier Aldana Reyes y Abigail Lee Six. Los cuentos teñidos por aspectos góticos, “Luisa” (1835; 1867) de Eugenio de Ochoa, “La dama de Amboto” (1858) de Gertrudis Gómez de Avellaneda y “El monte de las ánimas” (1861) de Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer, presentan ejemplos de fantasmas vengativos que aparecen a los responsables de su fallecimiento violento. A través de las caracterizaciones de estos fantasmas a lo largo de estos tres cuentos españoles del Romanticismo y el Pos-Romanticismo, este artículo indaga en la representación de género en cuanto a la venganza, los fantasmas y sus motivos comunes, y una trama típica que subraya las convenciones de la época y la popularidad del modo gótico.","PeriodicalId":40152,"journal":{"name":"Anales Galdosianos","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.3,"publicationDate":"2023-12-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139002546","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

De claras reminiscencias cervantinas, su autor propone un viaje a las diversas dimensiones sociales del país. Pero, además, revisita épocas y un pasado cuestionado en la línea que seguirá la obra de Américo Castro. Pérez Galdós rompe con la representación realista permitiendo a sus personajes moverse en dimensiones diversas para aprehender una visión más completa de España. Lejos de una añoranza nostálgica, Galdós encuentra en el pasado el impulso necesario para renovar el país en su presente y en su futuro, resignificando el relato del sentido histórico español.Abstract:In 1909, Benito Pérez Galdós published El caballero encantado, a work clearly reminiscent of Cervantes. The author proposes a journey through the various social spheres of Spain. Moreover, he revisits past eras and a contested history, foreshadowing the work of Américo Castro. Pérez Galdós breaks with realistic representation by allowing his characters to traverse fantastical dimensions, grasping a more complete vision of Spain. Far from nostalgic yearning, Galdós finds in the past the vital impulse to renew Spain in both its present and future, redefining the narrative of Spanish historical identity.","PeriodicalId":40152,"journal":{"name":"Anales Galdosianos","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.3,"publicationDate":"2023-12-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"138972949","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Estudiar el texto gráfico junto a los comentarios autorreflexivos del narrador-testigo de la primera serie de novelas, Gabriel Araceli, resalta los problemas inherentes a la relación entre historia y ficción. Las ilustraciones, por un lado, falsifican la historia al proporcionar pruebas ficticias de los acontecimientos pasados que se narran. Por otro, autentifican la ficción simulando la existencia de referentes que la narración pretende representar.Abstract:This essay examines the visualization of history and fiction in the illustrated edition of Galdós’s Episodios nacionales (1881–1885) to offer a framework for understanding the novelist’s engagement with history and historiography. Studying the graphic text alongside the self-reflective commentaries of the initial series’s first-person narrator, Gabriel Araceli, emphasizes the problems inherent to the relationship between history and fiction. The illustrations, on the one hand, falsify history by providing fictional evidence for the past events recounted. On the other, they authenticate the fiction by simulating the existence of external referents that the narrative purports to represent.","PeriodicalId":40152,"journal":{"name":"Anales Galdosianos","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.3,"publicationDate":"2023-12-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"138974099","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The relevance of physiognomy in “Anagnórisis” is incontrovertible in light of the dynamics structuring the exchange between Isidora and the Marchioness, the explicit use of the term in key passages, and the prevalence of this popularized science during the period. However, because physiognomy, as a “science” of intuition and first impressions, confirms Isidora is not who she claims herself to be, the chapter’s title is less ironic than has been postulated, for there is a recognition that masks physiognomy’s mythic makings in the guise of modern rationalism. Framed conversely by her own face, Isidora reflects a desire anchored in the preordained subject-object oneness now rejected by the Marchioness. Even still, the unresolved nature of Isidora’s character shows the permanence of physiognomy’s true ironies and importance for the novel.Resumen:El encuentro entre Isidora y la marquesa de Aransis en La desheredada (1881) de Benito Pérez Galdós viene irónicamente prefigurado por el título del capítulo “Anagnórisis”. Mientras Isidora se cree la nieta legítima de la marquesa, la inspección de sus rasgos no da pruebas suficientes. La relevancia de la fisonomía para “Anagnórisis” es indiscutible a la luz de la dinámica que caracteriza la conversación entre Isidora y la marquesa, el uso explícito del término en momentos clave y la ubicuidad de esta ciencia popularizada durante la época. No obstante, puesto que la fisonomía, como una “ciencia” basada en la intuición y las primeras impresiones, confirma que Isidora no es quien dice ser, el título del capítulo resulta menos irónico de lo que se ha postulado. En realidad, hay un reconocimiento que oculta el aspecto mítico de la fisonomía bajo el disfraz del racionalismo moderno. Retratada contrariamente por su propia cara, Isidora refleja un deseo anclado en la preordinada unión sujeto-objeto ahora rechazada por la marquesa. Aun así, la naturaleza incierta de Isidora como personaje pone de relieve la permanencia de las verdaderas ironías de la fisonomía y su importancia para la novela.","PeriodicalId":40152,"journal":{"name":"Anales Galdosianos","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.3,"publicationDate":"2023-12-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139002187","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
