{"title":"Prim y La de los tristes destinos, dos Episodios nacionales para pensar la revolución","authors":"Carolina Fernández Cordero","doi":"10.1353/ang.2023.a914815","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1353/ang.2023.a914815","url":null,"abstract":"Resumen:Entre 1906 y 1907, Benito Pérez Galdós completa la cuarta serie de sus Episodios nacionales con Prim y La de los tristes destinos. En ellos Galdós revisa la gestación y consolidación de la Revolución del 68 para establecer un diálogo con las tensiones históricas presentes e indagar en el concepto de revolución y sus posibilidades de materialización. Las novelas, además, examinan no solo la realidad política e ideológica de ambos momentos, sino también su “estructura del sentir”, siguiendo a Raymond Williams. ¿Cómo interpela la revolución a la sociedad de 1906–1907? ¿Cómo se enfrenta un pueblo agitado políticamente a este concepto? ¿Qué emociones despierta y para qué? A fin de responder a estas cuestiones, el presente trabajo propone un acercamiento a Prim y La de los tristes destinos desde la historia política, ideológica y de los afectos, en la que emociones como el miedo, la esperanza, la tristeza, etc. se muestran en el centro del concepto de revolución, son parte de la estructura del sentir del momento y contribuyen a la creación de un nuevo sujeto político definido por la ética del deseo y la acción política.Abstract:Between 1906–1907, Benito Pérez Galdós completed his Fourth Series of Episodios nacionales with Prim and La de los tristes destinos. As usual, Galdós was motivated by reflecting on and intervening in contemporary events, like the Moroccan War. By revisiting the 1868 Revolution, Galdós establishes a dialogue between past and present. The novels investigate the exile of Isabel II and the consolidation of the Revolution while also exploring the concept of revolution in early twenieth-century Spain. Galdós connects with both eras’ political, ideological, and affective dimensions. How does revolution challenge society? What emotions does it provoke? Galdós answers by depicting the “structure of feeling” - the fears, hopes, and sadness central to the revolutionary concept and political subject. In summary, Prim and La de los tristes destinos link the 1868 Revolution to contemporary debates through multidimensional history. Galdós probes the emotion and psychology of revolution to better understand Spain’s past, present, and future. The novels show revolution as a political event and an experience shaping national consciousness and destiny.","PeriodicalId":40152,"journal":{"name":"Anales Galdosianos","volume":"2003 16","pages":"108 - 125"},"PeriodicalIF":0.3,"publicationDate":"2023-12-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139001810","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Rueda","doi":"10.1353/ang.2022.0010","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1353/ang.2022.0010","url":null,"abstract":"Resumen:La obra novelística de Pérez Galdós (1843-1920) y Pardo Bazán (1851-1921) ofrece al lector un abigarrado abanico de personajes femeninos que experimentan la viudez en distintas coyunturas vitales y sociales que afectan la capacidad de acción y de supervivencia de la viuda en la España de la Restauración (1874-1931). Desde sus respectivos posicionamientos, liberal y feminista, estos autores problematizan esta condición civil de su realidad social y revelan la figura de la viuda ora transgrediendo, ora sucumbiendo a las normas vigentes de su tiempo. Este ensayo, de carácter analítico, indaga en los patrones dicotómicos en las representaciones literarias de las viudas y arguye que su estado como figura liminal facilita eventualmente formas públicas de comportamiento más integradas en el devenir histórico de una España moderna. Se analizan cuatro novelas protagonizadas por viudas: Doña Perfecta (1876) y La familia de León Roch (1878) de Pérez Galdós; El cisne de Vilamorta (1885) e Insolación (1889) de Pardo Bazán.Abstract:The novelistic production of Pérez Galdós (1843-1920) and Pardo Bazán (1851-1921) offers the reader an array of female characters that experience widowhood at distinct, vital crossroads in their lives that impact their agency and ability to survive in the Spain of the Bourbon Restoration (1874-1931). Using their respective liberal and feminist positionings, both authors problematize the civil status of the widow and portray her either transgressing or yielding to the social norms held by their society. This analytical essay seeks to explore the dichotomous patterns found in literary representations of widows and argues that their liminal state eventually facilitates public forms of behavior that are more attuned to a modern Spain. Four novels that feature widows as protagonists are analyzed: Doña Perfecta (1876) and La familia de León Roch (1878) by Pérez Galdós; El cisne de Vilamorta (1885) and Insolación (1889) by Pardo Bazán.","PeriodicalId":40152,"journal":{"name":"Anales Galdosianos","volume":"57 1","pages":"165 - 189"},"PeriodicalIF":0.3,"publicationDate":"2022-12-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47799709","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Se analizan las estrategias y resultados de transformar las figuras literarias en personajes de ficción histórica, lo que convierte la esfera íntima de su relación en vehículo de conmemoración pública. Con ese fin, se provee ambos escritores un cuerpo dinámico que les humaniza y a la vez desacraliza la monumentalidad que adquieren como objeto patrimonial, sin que se deje de honrar su legado intelectual. El análisis identifica el marco de efemérides como práctica institucional basada en una celebración de la herencia cultural, burguesa y liberal en esencia, como valor de progreso, que en este caso inscribe a Galdós y Pardo Bazán como agentes de un desarrollo social en materia de igualdad de género.Abstract:This article deals with a corpus of plays, television dramas, and narrative fictions that depicts the relationship between Galdós and Pardo Bazán as it can be reconstructed from their private correspondence. The epistolary as an artifact uncovers both their friendship and love affair, yet its incompleteness also lends to speculation and inquiry as well as to discourses about the nation's ideological past and present. Analyzed are the strategies, goals, and ethics of turning both writers into fictional characters that make public an intimate contact that was meant to be kept a secret. This maneuver is examined here as a mode of commemoration that honors their intellectual while it humanizes and desacralizes the pair as national monuments by giving them a body. Commemoration is framed as an institutional practice that celebrates notions of progress embedded in cultural heritage and is inherent to liberal bourgeois society. In their camaraderie and romance, it is argued, Galdós and Pardo Bazán are showcased as active but not radical agents for gender equality.","PeriodicalId":40152,"journal":{"name":"Anales Galdosianos","volume":"57 1","pages":"213 - 231"},"PeriodicalIF":0.3,"publicationDate":"2022-12-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46219523","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Gossip conversations between characters are a major theme and gossip propels plot in both novels. Applying Pierre Bourdieu's theories on bourgeois practices of distinction and the different capitals at play in social exchanges (economic, cultural, social, and symbolic) reveals an economy of gossip in Fortunata y Jacinta. Illicit and informal modes of talk, eavesdropping, and gossip mediate the relationship between Jacinta and Fortunata from beginning to end, connecting them. In contrast, in Los Pazos Emilia Pardo Bazán focuses on the (gender) politics of gossip, turning on its head the stereotypical belittling of women and women's discourse as gossips and gossip, to focus on male gossip and to expose male anxiety around gossip and status. Additionally, gossip acts as a productive metaphor for the relationship between narrator and readers. The narrators of both novels use an intimate, gossipy narrative voice and gossip-like narrative strategies, albeit in different ways and with different emphasis.Resumen:Este ensayo explora el uso de la chismografía o chisme por parte de Galdós y Emilia Pardo Bazán en dos de sus obras más conocidas: Fortunata y Jacinta (1886-87) y Los Pazos de Ulloa (1886). Las conversaciones chismosas entre personajes son un tema principal y los chismes impulsan la trama en ambas novelas. La aplicación de las teorías de Pierre Bourdieu sobre las prácticas burguesas de distinción, así como sobre los diferentes capitales en juego en los intercambios sociales (económico, cultural, social y simbólico), revela una economía del chisme en Fortunata y Jacinta. Modos de conversación ilícitos e informales, escuchas y chismes, median la relación entre Jacinta y Fortunata de principio a fin, conectando a ambos personajes. En los Pazos, por el contrario, Emilia Pardo Bazán se enfoca en la política (de género) del chisme, dando la vuelta al menosprecio estereotipado de las mujeres como chismosas, y de su discurso como chisme, para enfocarse en los chismes masculinos y exponer la ansiedad masculina en torno a los chismes y el estatus. Además, el chisme actúa como una metáfora productiva de la relación entre el narrador y los lectores. Los narradores de ambas novelas utilizan una voz narrativa íntima y chismosa y estrategias narrativas similares a las del chisme, aunque de diferente manera y con diferente énfasis.","PeriodicalId":40152,"journal":{"name":"Anales Galdosianos","volume":"57 1","pages":"191 - 212"},"PeriodicalIF":0.3,"publicationDate":"2022-12-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"49113716","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Dentro de las afinidades textuales que los unen, los cuentos \"Rompecabezas\" de Galdós (1897) y \"El rompecabezas\" de Pardo Bazán (1899) evidencian un espacio de encuentro que revela una intertextualidad dialógica en la que Pardo Bazán vuelve a responder a su coetáneo. Este artículo examina la correspondencia temática de dos textos con títulos casi idénticos publicados justo antes y después del Desastre del 1898, argumentando que expresan la insatisfacción de los autores por la pérdida colonial en el ocaso del siglo XIX. Las alegorías al final de ambos relatos invitan al lector a desenmarañar las parábolas de la inminente catástrofe del fin del imperio, logradas a su manera por cada escritor.Summary:The centenaries of the deaths of Benito Pérez Galdós (2020) and Emilia Pardo Bazán (2021) provide critics a perfect opportunity to explore the multiple points of convergence and divergence the authors maintained with one another for almost four decades (1880-1920). Within the textual affinities that unite the two, Galdós's \"Rompecabezas\" (1897) and Pardo Bazán's \"El rompecabezas\" (1899) evidence a dialogical intertextuality in which Pardo Bazán responds to a work previously published by her contemporary. This article examines the thematic correspondences between the two stories published before and after the Disaster of 1898, arguing that the tales with homologous titles bring to light the authors' dissatisfaction towards colonial loss at the turn of the century. The allegorical endings invite the reader to unravel the parables of imperial catastrophe achieved in ways unique to each writer.","PeriodicalId":40152,"journal":{"name":"Anales Galdosianos","volume":"57 1","pages":"125 - 141"},"PeriodicalIF":0.3,"publicationDate":"2022-12-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"41878195","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
