One of the further abnormalities is on retina (diabetic retinopathy). Early treatment can be conduct from detection of microaneurysms. The main concentration of this paper is the algorithm to detect microaneurysm with mathematical morphology. The mathematical morphology is choosen because microaneurysms tend to have typical shape. Generally, the algorithm is consist of three stages. The first is preprocessing, the second is detecting candidate microaneurysms, and the third is postprocessing handling the process of removing unused features. The performances is evaluated using the database from DIARETDB1 which provides ground truth collected from several experts and a strict evaluation protocol. The optimal performance will be satified when considering green channel obtaining, PAL size image processing, adaptive histogram equalization threshold at 0.03, canny edge detection threshold at 0.16, MAs and optimum microaneurysms size at 5 to 16 pixels.","PeriodicalId":395673,"journal":{"name":"2011 2nd International Conference on Instrumentation, Communications, Information Technology, and Biomedical Engineering","volume":"44 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-12-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133117796","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this work, the possibility of employing dual gap on square patch reflectarray antenna for bandwidth improvement is presented. The introduction of dual gap attached on square patch is shown to improve the bandwidth performance from 315 MHz to 397 MHz. Moreover 26% improvement of bandwidth performance offers an achievable static reflection loss of 0.28 dB. Several parameters of reflectarray antenna such as reflection loss, reflection phase, bandwidth and figure of merit (FoM) are also discussed in this work.","PeriodicalId":395673,"journal":{"name":"2011 2nd International Conference on Instrumentation, Communications, Information Technology, and Biomedical Engineering","volume":"280 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-12-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124495849","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Using calculated air flow, the sensor output is used to predict the air flow pattern characterized by two physical parameters, known as FVC and FEV. It is shown that different geometrical design, namely the distance between the heater and the temperature detector has important effects on the sensor sensitivity, and hence its capability for identifying the respiratory health condition of the patient, whether it is normal, resistive or obstructive.","PeriodicalId":395673,"journal":{"name":"2011 2nd International Conference on Instrumentation, Communications, Information Technology, and Biomedical Engineering","volume":"114 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-12-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121835874","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is expected to provide scaffolding function during the healing period and progressively disappear thereafter leaving no foreign remnant in the vessel. Progress on biodegradable stents depends on the development of their constitutive materials, including degradable metals. Currently, the main challenge is to optimize mechanical property and degradation behavior of the proposed metals. This work aims to develop new metal alloy for biodegradable stents having physical and mechanical property approaching those of 316L stainless steel but with degradation capability. The alloy is composed of iron and 35wt%manganese and was produced through a powder sintering process. This Fe35Mn alloy possesses comparable mechanical property to that of 316L stainless steel. Its degradation rate is slightly faster than pure iron but slower than magnesium alloy. The alloy shows moderate toxicity effect to fibroblast cells. Finally, the alloy was successfully transformed into stent prototype using standard fabrication protocol for 316L stainless steel and shows appropriate mechanical performance.","PeriodicalId":395673,"journal":{"name":"2011 2nd International Conference on Instrumentation, Communications, Information Technology, and Biomedical Engineering","volume":"85 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-12-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115209480","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The bone stability during the fixation period is determined by the conformity between the bone and plate. The plate fits well to the bone if it is designed based on the bone contour. Hence, the contour profile of bone must be determined prior to designing the plate. The aim of this work is to perform a contouring technique for human tibia and then to formulate the results into a mathematical model. Samples were 2D X-rays images of five tibia from Javanese people. The data was well fitted to the Rational Chebyshev equation.","PeriodicalId":395673,"journal":{"name":"2011 2nd International Conference on Instrumentation, Communications, Information Technology, and Biomedical Engineering","volume":"56 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-12-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127339118","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The main feature of the proposed instrument is the use of a bungee cord that generates a moderate but steady force and a very large displacement during the measurement. Its prime feature is the simple structure of the instrument. The second is a minimal effect from change in subject posture, i.e. the change in density distribution of the subject astronaut. The present status and the future prospects of the Space Scale, including the results of the experiments using the airplane (parabolic flight experiment) and the International Space Station (ISS), are reviewed.","PeriodicalId":395673,"journal":{"name":"2011 2nd International Conference on Instrumentation, Communications, Information Technology, and Biomedical Engineering","volume":"43 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-12-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128264302","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Vascular diseases are the primary cause of death in the world and at least 1 million patients undergo to surgical operation for prosthesis implantation each year worldwide to face cardiovascular occlusive diseases, aneurysms and acute renal failures. As the major problem still resides in an interfacial mismatch between the synthetic inert graft and the natural living tissue surrounding it, the common approaches consist of modulating the tissue/biomaterial interface by modifying the synthetic graft surface properties, in an attempt to improve their long-term biocompatibility and hemocompatibility. Thus, several coating techniques, including plasma-based treatments, were investigated during the last 20 years to improve clinical performances of cardiovascular devices, including stents and vascular prostheses. Strong binding of selected bio-molecules, including protein-repellent ones, surface patterning, and a number of other strategies has already been investigated in order to obtain biological-like surfaces based on the hypothesis that the human body would positively interact with these biological coated materials. Nevertheless, such coatings did not completely successes clinically as it turned out that the bioactive materials could not play their biological role as well as expected and eventually led to the development of negative interactions and finally to clinical complications. Today, nanotechnology and surface modifications provides a new insight to the current problem of biomaterial failures, and even allows us to envisage strategies for the organ shortage. Advanced tools and new paths towards the development of functional solutions for cardiovascular clinical applications are now available. Within this general framework, this talk will focus on highly-adherent and strongly-cohesive (after deployment) fluorocarbon nano-coatings for intravascular stents, bio-mimicking coatings for vascular prostheses, and degradable metals for temporary devices. The intrinsic goal is to present an extremely personal look at how materials and surface modifications have progressed, from the glory days of their introduction, to the promising future that nanotechnology may or may not hold for improving the quality of the life of millions worldwide.","PeriodicalId":395673,"journal":{"name":"2011 2nd International Conference on Instrumentation, Communications, Information Technology, and Biomedical Engineering","volume":"61 1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-12-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122389500","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
