When we deal with unstructured knowledge, getting of useful information for the teaching process is very difficult. Neural networks can store subsymbolic knowledge, but until recently it was believed to be only in a \"black-box\" format. Knowledge extraction from NNs is a relatively new field, which tries to reduce these disadvantages and build a bridge between subsymbolic and symbolic knowledge. As the teaching process requires only symbolic knowledge, we believe this to be a chance for teachers to significantly improve their teaching materials and/or style by combining the symbolic knowledge of the domain theory with the rules extracted from the empirical subsymbolic knowledge stored in NNs trained on examples. Therefore, we developed a neural network's subsymbolic knowledge extraction environment for the teaching process assistance and also built a study case of teaching stock exchange developments.","PeriodicalId":394492,"journal":{"name":"1998 Second International Conference. The objective of the model is to forecast the future value of the time series based upon the current and some past values of the time series. In this approach, we cast the parameters of the time series autoregressive model as the optimal control coefficients in order to obtain an improved forecast. This allows effective use of information underlying the system dynamics to drive the evolution of the autoregression parameters. This is in contrast to the typical constant-parameters autoregressive models commonly used for time series modelling and forecasting. The proposed optimal control based time series model is tested on the Singapore property price index. The results show a significant improvement of the forecasting performance over the constant-parameters autoregressive models and the random walk models.","PeriodicalId":394492,"journal":{"name":"1998 Second International Conference. Elementary school pupils frequently have difficult acquiring authoring skills, i.e. how to develop the idea or materials to be expressed, how to compose the materials of the outcome or contents. We focus on the problems of how to support authoring work to arrange materials in order to formulate ideas as the stories develop. The basic ideas behind the method are that (1) a basic story is automatically generated by genetic algorithm (GA) based operations and shown to a user as sequences of pictures, (2) an interactive GA is used to evaluate and select a preferred story, (3) the results are compared with previously stored stories using case-based techniques. Based on these ideas, we have developed a computer supported environment for this purpose and conducted related experiments.","PeriodicalId":394492,"journal":{"name":"1998 Second International Conference. When applying it to a mobile robot, the robot needs to have precise information such as distance and azimuth. We discuss how to construct the fuzzy behavior-based control system for a miniature mobile robot in the case when the robot can not often receive any information from sensors. In addition, we apply a virus evolutionary genetic algorithm with species to generating the fuzzy rule. The effectiveness of the proposed method is shown by simulations.","PeriodicalId":394492,"journal":{"name":"1998 Second International Conference. Knowledge-Based Intelligent Electronic Systems. The importance of edge detection increases as one seeks to increase the level of automation in the image processing system. The paper reports an edge detection operator which is fast in application to grey scale images and is sensitive to 'difficult' edges but not sensitive to artifacts such as scanner interlacing artifacts. The edge detection operator presented is simple but provides good detection of edges and clean and continuous edges across most of the image.","PeriodicalId":394492,"journal":{"name":"1998 Second International Conference.
