In the general machine scheduling problems, job shop type jobs and open shop type jobs are scheduled together and the imposition of precedence constraints is allowed between operations belonging to either the same job or different jobs. This paper proposes a genetic algorithm to solve such general machine scheduling problems. Some experimental results are presented to show the applicability of the proposed method. The method can be used to solve traditional job shop scheduling, flow shop scheduling, and open shop scheduling as well as general machine scheduling problems.","PeriodicalId":394492,"journal":{"name":"1998 Second International Conference. The problem of detecting faults in the cooling coil of an air-conditioning system is used as an illustrative example. Results are presented which demonstrate the advantages of using a neurofuzzy model-based detection scheme with a variable threshold. The performance is compared to that of an ideal model-based fault detector and that of detectors with fixed thresholds. The sensitivity of the diagnosis to the type and magnitude of the fault is also examined. Experimental data collected from a full-scale air-conditioning system are used to design and test a fault detector.","PeriodicalId":394492,"journal":{"name":"1998 Second International Conference. This is because wheel skid can lead to an increase in noise and vibration from wheels with flat points, as well as an increased braking distance. However conventional anti-skid control has problems because the train wheel adhesion and skid characteristics are difficult and time consuming to accurately model. Therefore a fuzzy logic based anti-skid controller was implemented where linguistic control information could be used. In this paper the design and implementation of the fuzzy logic controller is described. Results show that the anti-skid controller has a very good performance, performing better than the previous conventional controller. The described controller is currently running in railway brake sets in both Japan and other countries.","PeriodicalId":394492,"journal":{"name":"1998 Second International Conference. The bacterial operation, in the pseudo-bacterial genetic algorithm (PBGA) is efficient in improving local portions of chromosomes. In the experiments presented a gene transfer operation is introduced in the place of the crossover operation in the PBGA. The gene transfer operation allows the chromosomes to directly transfer information to the other counterparts in the population. The gene transfer is inspired by the phenomenon of transfer of strands of genes between bacteria that occurs in nature. By means of this mechanism. One bacterium can rapidly spread its genetic information to other cells. Numerical experiments were performed to show the effectiveness of the PBGA with the gene transfer operation. The obtained results show the benefits that can be obtained with the newly introduced operation.","PeriodicalId":394492,"journal":{"name":"1998 Second International Conference. The /spl nu/MOS WTA identifies the location of the winner as an oscillating node of a multiple-loop /spl nu/MOS ring oscillator. The nonoscillating mode of operation has been also obtained by a proper design of delay elements. High accuracy search for the winner has been achieved by the introduction of a new digital/analog merged feedback control. The circuit operation has been demonstrated and all verified by test circuits fabricated by double-polysilicon CMOS processes.","PeriodicalId":394492,"journal":{"name":"1998 Second International Conference. Technical information have been accumulated in an electronic form as documents which contain texts, pictures and movies in enterprises. However, it needs expert knowledge to make use of these technical information. In this paper, we describe an ontology-centric framework, called intelligent corporate base (ICoB) which organizes a technical information into documents, assists a comprehension of documents and helps share information. We explain a prototype system for planning on repair work of transformers. Furthermore, we describe development and use of ontology for technical information sharing.","PeriodicalId":394492,"journal":{"name":"1998 Second International Conference. Here a pyramidal neuron in hippocampus is modeled based on physiological findings, which is known to show calcium-dependent dynamics in dendrites. Responses of the model neuron to excitatory stimuli on the dendrites are studied under the varied somatic inhibitions. Computer simulations demonstrate synaptic control of spatiotemporal dynamics of the active dendrite system. Highly organized neuronal information processing might be possible by the interaction between the hierarchical dendrite system and the dendritic pattern of synapse distribution.","PeriodicalId":394492,"journal":{"name":"1998 Second International Conference. The blind deconvolution problem is modeled as an optimization problem whose cost function is to be minimized by the proposed hybrid approach. The approach combines the advantage of GA for global searches and the advantage of SA for local ones. The results indicate that it is possible to arrive at high quality solutions in reasonable time even for large-scale problems, such as image processing.","PeriodicalId":394492,"journal":{"name":"1998 Second International Conference. RSOM includes a recurrent difference vector in each unit of the map, which allows storing temporal context from consecutive input vectors fed to the map. RSOM is a modification of the temporal Kohonen map (TKM). It is shown that RSOM learns a correct mapping from temporal sequences of a simple synthetic data, while TKM fails to learn this mapping. In addition, two case studies are presented, in which RSOM is applied to EEG based epileptic activity detection and to time series prediction with local models. Results suggest that RSOM can be efficiently used in temporal sequence processing.","PeriodicalId":394492,"journal":{"name":"1998 Second International Conference. Two new versions of the self-organizing feature map are derived equipped with such a methodology. The first approach introduces an excitation term, which increases the convergence speed and efficiency of the algorithm while increasing the probability of escaping from local minima. In the second approach we associate a learning set which specifies attractive and repulsive fields of output neurons. Results indicate that accuracy percentile of the new methods are higher than the original algorithm while they have the ability to escape from local minima.","PeriodicalId":394492,"journal":{"name":"1998 Second International Conference.
