The system assists users to understand the transition of the argument and the whole structure of the argument by visualizing the relationship between utterances from the view points of the cause-and-effect and the semantics. The system provides the cause-and-effect view by using a tree structure, and semantic view by using a spring model. The transition from one view to other is seamless so as to enable users to keep track of thinking.","PeriodicalId":394492,"journal":{"name":"1998 Second International Conference. They are genetic algorithms, simulated annealing, and backpropagation reconstruction techniques. The three techniques have been developed independently of each other. We present a comparative evaluation study of these techniques. We start by introducing the three new approaches respectively, and then present the simulation result. The reconstruction result obtained by the conventional algebraic reconstruction technique is also presented. A quantitative evaluation among the four reconstruction methods is presented. A pixel-wise error estimator is used to calculate the overall error in the reconstructed images. The estimator reveals the effectiveness of the proposed techniques compared to the conventional method.","PeriodicalId":394492,"journal":{"name":"1998 Second International Conference. However, in practice, because it is considerably difficult to determine the PID parameters suitably, many studies have been reported on the tuning method of the PID parameters. The objective of the paper is to design a self-tuning PID controller for achieving time-varying tracking control of a robot manipulator. We present a fuzzy neural network (FNN), which is used to automate the parameters tuning of the PID controller. Some experimental test results are also included to demonstrate the improvement in the tracking performance when the proposed method is used.","PeriodicalId":394492,"journal":{"name":"1998 Second International Conference. In general, proximity data (for example, mobility data, input-output data, perceptual confusion data, etc.) are observed in an asymmetric form. If such data are obtained over several times, then 3-way data are constructed. In this paper, we focus on the clustering techniques for 3-way data and show that the proposed method can capture the properties of time difference and asymmetry between two objects in spite of the numbering of the clusters.","PeriodicalId":394492,"journal":{"name":"1998 Second International Conference. Since these methods are iterative approaches, they require long computation time to generate a CGH. In this paper, we propose a new method based on an artificial neural network (ANN) to reduce the high computation cost. In this scheme, we first use a couple of known optimized CGHs, which may be obtained by the traditional optimization methods, as teaching signals to train the ANN. With the trained ANN, we can easily and quickly obtain an optimized CGH without the optimization process for other input images.","PeriodicalId":394492,"journal":{"name":"1998 Second International Conference. As a learning algorithm, reinforcement learning is often utilized to acquire the relation between sensory input and action. Learning agents in the real world using visual sensors are often confronted with the critical problem of how to build a necessary and sufficient state space for the agent to execute the task. We propose the acquisition of a relation between vision and action using the visual state-action map (VSAM). VSAM is the application of a self-organizing map (SOM). Input image data is mapped on the node of the learned VSAM. Then VSAM outputs the appropriate action for the state. We applied VSAM to a real robot. The experimental result shows that a real robot avoids the wall while moving around the environment.","PeriodicalId":394492,"journal":{"name":"1998 Second International Conference. The general idea of the approach is to use and enhance the fuzzy c-means clustering algorithm. The rule base is generated through a modified iterative feature clustering method. A following cross-checking is used to separate the generated rules. Although the rule base generation method was initially developed for handwriting features the scope of its applicability is much larger. The proposed clustering algorithm was tested with input feature space up to 125 dimensions.","PeriodicalId":394492,"journal":{"name":"1998 Second International Conference. Two approaches generate a single fuzzy if-then rule for each class by specifying the membership function of each antecedent fuzzy set using the information about attribute values of training patterns. The other two approaches are based on fuzzy grids with homogeneous fuzzy partitions of each attribute. Since these four approaches are very simple and involve no time-consuming procedures, they can be easily implemented and applied to real-world pattern classification problems. The performance of each approach for test patterns (i.e., the generalization of ability of each approach) is evaluated by cross-validation techniques on commonly used data sets. Simulation results are compared with the performance of various classification methods reported in the literature.","PeriodicalId":394492,"journal":{"name":"1998 Second International Conference. In most cases, a dynamic task allocation is needed in which the level of automation (or system autonomy) is dependent on changing operator needs in a dynamic operational environment. This paper provides a step-by-step concept for automation. Candidate tasks for automation are identified by their specific control and display interface characteristics. Control and display characteristics of each task will then lead to a hierarchical decomposition of task levels. The relationship between these levels is that the operator will only pay full attention to the next level once all tasks allocated to the previous one are handled adequately. This hierarchy is translated into a framework of different classes of automation and operator assistance.","PeriodicalId":394492,"journal":{"name":"1998 Second International Conference.
