Especially this study calculates and analyzes the aggregated regional wind power forecast error compared to single sites. Using simulated measured wind power and expected wind power from 5 planned wind farms, this research finds that the reduction of the ensemble wind power forecast error depends on the size of the region. To generate these findings, the spatial correlation function of prediction error is applied to calculate the ensemble wind forecast error based on arbitrary configurations of wind farms and wind generations, as long as the total installed wind capacity is a fixed number for the selected planned wind farms. The validation of the spatial smoothing effects will provide the Maritimes utilities an alternative method to reduce the regional aggregated wind power forecast errors instead of using costly wind prediction system.","PeriodicalId":393869,"journal":{"name":"2010 IEEE Electrical Power & Energy Conference","volume":"24 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132773001","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

If capacitor placement is meant, the objective function will be the cost of energy losses besides the capacitors costs in a specified period of time. Here, reconfiguration can be used as a strategy to reform the base configuration of the distribution network in order to place the capacitors more efficiently with lower costs. On the other hand, if capacitors are already available in a network, optimum capacitors setting and network reconfiguration should be performed for power loss minimization. In this paper both power loss minimization and capacitor placement cost minimization are implemented using a modified particle swarm optimization algorithm. PSO is a robust optimization algorithm inspired by social behavior. Several simulations are performed on two conventional sample distribution networks and compared against the results of existing methods which demonstrated the advantage of this method.","PeriodicalId":393869,"journal":{"name":"2010 IEEE Electrical Power & Energy Conference","volume":"47 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124673870","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Power system restoration is the procedure of restoring power system elements after a partial or a complete blackout. Because of its economic and political importance, different strategies have been developed for power system restoration. One of the most practical and economical is the build-up strategy that includes the process of restoring separated parts (islands) in the power system and interconnecting them afterwards. This paper intends to develop a systematic algorithm for sectionalizing a power system considering various constraints such as black-start capability of generators, power supply-demand balance and independence of islands. Moreover, utilizing Wide Aare Measurement System (WAMS), each island will be fully observable in this method which is a crucial requirement for the restoration process. The New England 39 bus power system is used to demonstrate the proposed algorithm and verify the results. The proposed method is also applied to the IEEE 118 bus system as a large-scale power system to prove its capability in practical systems.","PeriodicalId":393869,"journal":{"name":"2010 IEEE Electrical Power & Energy Conference","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125915289","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A commonly used optimization technique to solve the unit commitment problem is dual programming. This work focuses on solving the subproblem of scheduling a combined cycle plant using dynamic programming under a dual optimization scheme. The model used to represent the combined cycle plants is based on configurations; this new model takes into account such constraints as the feasible transitions between configurations, and the minimum and maximum time that a combined cycle plant must remain on a certain configuration. This model accurately represents the reallife characteristics of combined cycle plants like different start-up sequences and different stopping conditions. One novelty of this model is that the representation of each one of the states and configurations is done with a single integer state index that consecutively sums the time that the combined cycle plant must remain on each state or configuration. The use of this integer state index simplifies the state-space diagrams and reduces the number of integer/binary variables in the model. Another novelty is the modeling of Hybrid Combined Cycle Plants; these are the ones that use an auxiliary boiler in order to increase the production of steam.","PeriodicalId":393869,"journal":{"name":"2010 IEEE Electrical Power & Energy Conference","volume":"96 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115172960","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Firstly, the CM and DM noise current loops in SRM's power converter are discussed, and the noise separator based on 0°/180° splitter is employed for noise diagnosis. Then, the EMI filer design and the radiator-ungrounded method are proposed for SRM noise suppression. Experimental results show that the noise diagnose method is valid and reliable for EMI filter design, and the AC input of SRM influence the total noise greatly. Moreover, the proposed EMI filter technique is verified to satisfy EMC standards, and its noise decline rate reaches to 30%. The radiator-ungrounded method is testified to be effective against CM noise.","PeriodicalId":393869,"journal":{"name":"2010 IEEE Electrical Power & Energy Conference","volume":"34 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132478873","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This manifests in the form of degraded reliability and power quality. Active methods where disturbances are injected into the grid for detecting islanding operations are not suitable for RDGs because they lead to power quality degradation. On the other hand, passive methods using local measurements do not introduce disturbances into the grid and are inexpensive; however, their performance may be compromised when operating in distorted environments. This paper presents a comprehensive survey of passive-based islanding protection schemes that have been proposed in the literature. The paper investigates the performance of the islanding detection schemes in the context of degraded power quality that will occur with the increased penetration of RDGs into the electric grid.","PeriodicalId":393869,"journal":{"name":"2010 IEEE Electrical Power & Energy Conference","volume":"195 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132636293","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The indirect field-oriented control based on PWM voltage modulation with voltage decoupling compensation is used to insert the shoot-through state within the switching signals. A dual loop controller is designed to control the peak dc link voltage of the ZSI, where the peak dc-link voltage is estimated by measuring the input and the capacitor voltages. The peak dc link voltage control is designed based on a small signal model using the bode diagram. Also, the parameters of the PI controllers in the IFOC method are calculated based on the required dynamic specifications. The proposed speed control methods, with reduced DC input voltage compared with the standard adjustable speed drives (ASD), are able to change the motor speed from zero to the rated speed with the rated load torque. The performance of the proposed speed control methods is verified by MATLAB simulation of a 15 kW induction motor fed by a high performance ZSI. The simulation results during start up, load disturbance and input voltage change are presented. The simulation results have verified the validity of the proposed closed loop speed control methods. Also it indicate that, the performance of the indirect field-oriented control based on PWM voltage modulation is more efficient than the V/F control for speed control of the induction motor fed by the high-performance ZSI. Experimental setup of a high-performance ZSI is under progress.","PeriodicalId":393869,"journal":{"name":"2010 IEEE Electrical Power & Energy Conference","volume":"33 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125368398","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
