Supplying the electricity required for the operation of a monitoring station can be done in two ways: stored energy is carried on-site (fuel, battery), or energy is harvested from the environment and converted to an electrical current. Energy harvesting is an attractive solution that requires careful planning. Simulation of energy sources, energy transducers, power converters, storage devices, and components of the monitoring station is employed for component sizing and for testing worst-case scenarios. As the availability of each energy source is dependent on the geographic location, data from specialized meteorological databases is used as input for the simulator.","PeriodicalId":393869,"journal":{"name":"2010 IEEE Electrical Power & Energy Conference","volume":"404 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116075879","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Based on analysis of the variation characteristics of wind speed, we applied econometrics theory into the modeling of wind speed, since GARCH has an excellent performance to tracing the variation of those fluctuating sequences. Using the wind power curve, the power output of a wind turbine is easily acquired from the forecasted wind speed. In reference to our study case, its wind data are input into the established model to verify its validity of the approach we proposed. Therefore, the estimated wind power curve for the next day becomes a valuable reference for the dispatch department of a power grid. Compared with the ARIMA and a typical ANN model, GARCH demonstrates its advantage in improving the prediction precision. In addition, in order to understand the applicability of the GARCH model, many numerical simulations have been done and we found that GARCH has better forecasting performances to those sequences with high fluctuation.","PeriodicalId":393869,"journal":{"name":"2010 IEEE Electrical Power & Energy Conference","volume":"360 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114756624","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, a 4-layer Neuro-Fuzzy (NF) controller to tune the Fuzzy Rule Base is presented. FL-based PI controllers require gains values as further gains are updated around these values. The proposed controller adds intelligence to the controller as it has the capability of finding out the PI gains with changing system conditions. Gaussian and Triangular membership functions (MFs), corresponding to Radial Basis Functions (RBF) and Cerebellar Model Articulation Controller (CMAC) neural network architecture respectively, have been used to see which one offers a better performance. Results from simulations illustrate the potential of the proposed control scheme as the NF controller successfully adapts to different system conditions and is able to minimize the total current error. Furthermore, a performance comparison with a conventional PI controller is also made.","PeriodicalId":393869,"journal":{"name":"2010 IEEE Electrical Power & Energy Conference","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"120985202","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Various switching state sequences of a three-phase three-switch buck-type unity power factor rectifier are reviewed and the operation modes of the converter are explained and analyzed. The converter operates under zero current switching (ZCS) condition. By using an auxiliary circuit with a simple method of energy recovery, the current is diverted away from the main power switches before they are to be turned off; so, switching losses in the converter are reduced. The auxiliary circuit consists of two auxiliary switches and a resonant inductance-capacitance circuit connected to the auxiliary switches. The proper operation of the converter is confirmed by the results obtained from the digital simulations.","PeriodicalId":393869,"journal":{"name":"2010 IEEE Electrical Power & Energy Conference","volume":"14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128066765","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

One of the systems is based on Permanent Magnet Generator (PMG) and the other system is based on Wound Rotor Induction Generator (WRIG). Experimental test benches for both systems are implemented using Wind Turbine Emulator (WTE) and Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) control strategy. The procedure for calculate the Power Conditioning System (PCS) losses, energy capture and energy loss is presented. The expected efficiency of the systems is investigated for wind distributions at eight sites in Newfoundland and Labrador. It is shown that a WRIG-based system could provide 5% higher efficiency in contrast to a PMG-based system.","PeriodicalId":393869,"journal":{"name":"2010 IEEE Electrical Power & Energy Conference","volume":"55 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123651670","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Single fuel cell voltage level is extremely low in comparison with its output current. According to the extremely low level of the voltage, a suitable dc/dc boost converter must be used for increasing the voltage. In this paper, a model for a single fuel cell is presented and the effect of external load variation and changing of reactant pressure on cell performance is investigated. Moreover, a predictive voltage controller for boost convertor of PEM fuel cell is presented, simulated and validated using MATLAB/Simulink. The results show a constant regulated voltage with admissible startup versus variations of converter reactant pressure and external load that has not achieved in pervious works. Considerable improvement in efficiency of fuel cell converter is gained compare to extremely low level of reactant pressure. It hopes to improve the efficiency and performance of the converter via more precise elements in future.","PeriodicalId":393869,"journal":{"name":"2010 IEEE Electrical Power & Energy Conference","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131769014","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The novel optimization approach using Multi Objective Particle Swarm Optimization MOPSO is implemented to tackle a number of conflicting goals that define the complex optimality problem. The equivalent generic single-line system model (EGSLM) is applied. Multi-Objective Particle Swarm Optimization MOPSO is then carried out to find the optimal capacitor bank sizes that minimizes several conflicting objective functions.","PeriodicalId":393869,"journal":{"name":"2010 IEEE Electrical Power & Energy Conference","volume":"209 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115994845","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper presents a news simplified series single-phase active power filter based on controlling harmonic levels in residential and commercial areas. We developed it in order to define new control schemes characterized by simple control algorithms, reduced number of current transducers, and a less price controller. It is able to install easily in any non-linear device. The proposed filter can improve especially for the harmonic defects arising from small non-linear loads like as computers, faxes, photocopier machines, printers…etc. The amplitude and the shape of the fundamental current are controlled through the microcontroller (PIC16f788). The harmonic rate of the distortion after filtering is lower than 5%, which is less than the maximum accepted value by the international recommendations standards.","PeriodicalId":393869,"journal":{"name":"2010 IEEE Electrical Power & Energy Conference","volume":"21 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133792988","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
