Rearely a separate measurement of the sole lighting component is available. Instead, estimating and or measuring the actual energy consumption due to indoor lighting only spent is an important goal since an accurate evaluation could help and guide energy managers and designers towards the most appropriate lighting system. Building automation and control systems (BACS) provide important data treatment procedures enabling such kind of monitoring. This paper analyzes some methodologies for calculating and measuring energy consumption for lighting systems, ranging from direct to indirect measurement techniques. This paper promotes a simple method for an indirect measure by adopting ordinary actuators and a basic supervisory system with a low cost impact.","PeriodicalId":393869,"journal":{"name":"2010 IEEE Electrical Power & Energy Conference","volume":"55 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115576125","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The multi-resolution properties of wavelet transform makes it efficient for spectral representation of high frequency power system transients. This property is exploited to rapidly detect and accurately classify power network disturbances. This information can then be used for high speed relays that could operate network switches for remedial actions. A digital signal processor platform was used to implement the algorithm. The accuracy of the implementation was verified using MATLAB wavelet toolbox. Example case was presented to demonstrate the applicability of wavelet implementation for transient based protection applications.","PeriodicalId":393869,"journal":{"name":"2010 IEEE Electrical Power & Energy Conference","volume":"19 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130084197","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The fuel economy of PHEV is highly dependent on All-Electric-Range (AER), drivetrain component size and control strategy parameter. In this study we consider PHEV version of parallel hybrid NOVA transit bus model developed with the Powertrain System Analysis Toolkit (PSAT).A genetic based derivative free algorithm called Multi-Objective Genetic Algorithm (MOGA) is used to optimize conflicting drivetrain and control strategy parameters. In these cases, pre-selected units with the ability to start themselves with a well established energization plan are used to restart the system. As a case study, a power system comprising of 27 diesel generators, a 130km 230kV transmission line and a mine load is considered in terms of a black start analysis. The system is operated in isolated mode (i.e. not connected to the grid) and the black start ability is critical for energization of the system. The studies placed a strong emphasis on two main transformers at the generating substation since the inrush current imposed by these transformers was deemed to be the determining criteria for a successful black start. Detailed modeling of the transformers was performed to capture the non-linear behavior of the transformer core based on the data provided by the transformer vendor.","PeriodicalId":393869,"journal":{"name":"2010 IEEE Electrical Power & Energy Conference","volume":"48 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127044338","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The instantaneous currents of primary and secondary are transformed by using moving window averaging technique for the window width of one cycle. The steady state values of transformed currents are zero for a sinusoidal signal. However, the presence of harmonic and dc offset may deviate it from its nominal zero value. The energization of transformer leads to decaying transient inrush current which mal-operate the differential relay. The power transformer is modeled in ATP-EMTP environment considering core nonlinearities and losses so as to capture inrush current. The moving window averaging technique based current differential protection algorithm is implemented in MATLAB. The relay is tested for various internal and external faults. The result promises applicability of proposed algorithm for protection of transformer.","PeriodicalId":393869,"journal":{"name":"2010 IEEE Electrical Power & Energy Conference","volume":"42 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122111572","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
