Okada et al . have engaged in R&D of advanced industrial measurement systems using semiconductor lasers that are small, lightweight, and easy to handle, and developed new devices that could measure glossy or mirror surfaces that were difficult to measure with conventional measurement technology. Utilizing this experience, and collaborating closely with regional companies, AIST and Sigma engaged in the development of a system to conduct high-speed and high-precision inspection for minute flaws and defects on the inner wall surfaces of machined holes with various diameters, and finally succeeded in developing and commercializing a laser defect inspection system. An indispensable aspect of manufacturing is the external inspection of all product parts. For example, in the manufacturing of cars, autonomous inspection technology is required to detect minute flaws on glossy or mirror surfaces, which are easily overlooked by visual inspection. In this paper, we report on the history, significance, and future development of an innovative defect inspection system, “ANALYZER,” which has been developed and commercialized. The components of the protective layer were selected from the viewpoints of dispersibility in a solvent, transparency of the layer, and hardness of the layer. It was confirmed that even after repeated washing with a dishwasher, the color, gloss, and surface flatness of the protective layer resisted deterioration. We optimized the paste viscosity, spray blowing pressure, and number of coatings to establish a method of giving a protective layer to products. Our research focused on sperm manipulation to improve the reproductive performance of cattle. Our experiments were based on previous studies on infertility treatment for humans by relying on the advantages of motile spermatozoa, i.e. spermatozoa that are capable of swimming against the flow of solutions, which is regarded as an attribute of healthy and physiologically functional spermatozoa. For the first time, we succeeded in collecting a number of spermatozoa that can be used for artificial insemination and obtained good conception results in a field trial. Although the image is a common sight now, one can imagine that the transmission electron microscope (TEM) photograph that showed the uniform ordered mesopores that was published in Nature at the time of its discovery made a great impression on materials researchers. Figure 1 (top) shows a typical analysis result of mesoporous silica. A nanoscale ordered structure can be seen from X-ray diffraction measurement in the low-angle range, and it is possible to directly visualize the structure through TEM observation. Also, by analyzing the shape of nitrogen adsorption isotherms, it is possible to calculate a specific surface area, pore capacity, and pore size distribution. However, impurities or materials that have not turned porous may be mixed. The overall plan of the quadrangle geological mapping project and the production process of 1:50,000 quadrangle geological maps can be rephrased as the general scenario and individual scenarios of the mapping project. In the first half of this paper, I shall address the general scenario through the changes in the plan of the quadrangle geological mapping project since the Meiji Period, and in the latter half, I shall introduce the individual scenar ios for the production of 1:50,000 quadrangle geological maps.
