In this paper, simulation of fire in a short unidirectional 2-lane road tunnel and its evacuation using the FDS+Evac system are analysed. FDS+Evac enables to simulate fire spread in the tunnel utilizing the obtained fire characteristics for modelling evacuation of people. Three evacuation scenarios which differ from each other by cars location in the tunnel are illustrated. The impact of turned cars on fire spread and people egress is demonstrated. Some specific particularities of the current version of FDS+Evac, which must be taken into account in modelling the egress in tunnel fire conditions to avoid misrepresentation of input representation, are discussed.","PeriodicalId":386945,"journal":{"name":"2013 8th EUROSIM Congress on Modelling and Simulation","volume":"21 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-09-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125924745","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We proposed a method for constructing Finite Automata (FA) models on which LT is performed online for single or multiple inhabitants. However, the accuracy of LT strongly depends on the choices of the designer concerning topology (in particular the splitting of the dwelling in zones) and the number and placement of sensors. To evaluate the impact of these choices onto the efficiency of the LT, we proposed an analytical approach that allows determining asymptotic performance criteria. This performance evaluation does not take into account the human behavior (real time moving of inhabitants) which is very difficult to model. In order to include the inhabitants behavior, and thus to improve the performance evaluation by considering dynamic criteria, we propose in this paper a discrete event simulation approach that allows to emulate the smart home and to immerse the human operator into this environment without having to model the human behavior.","PeriodicalId":386945,"journal":{"name":"2013 8th EUROSIM Congress on Modelling and Simulation","volume":"18 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-09-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129661500","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The magnetic flux density along the iron core and the eddy current distribution as the heat source are investigated. It is found that the magnetic flux density along the iron core is not to uniform. The value has the maximum around the heating coils, and besides as the distance from the heating coils increases, the magnetic flux density value decreases to the lowest at the I-shape core where the metal ring to be heated is located. With the knowledge of the magnetic flux density along the core obtained, the eddy current densities within the metal rings are obtained by FEM and a theoretical approach. The theoretical results agree well with the FEM results. The values and the theoretical formula can become a necessary piece of information when developing the advanced control of the metal ring induction heater.","PeriodicalId":386945,"journal":{"name":"2013 8th EUROSIM Congress on Modelling and Simulation","volume":"37 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-09-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129818395","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Uncertainties in design, procurement, operation and environmental issues are the major sources in construction project that should be managed. Most of researchers proposed a modelling and simulation techniques to solve these uncertainties problem nevertheless not for environmental issues. However, the environmental issues were also leading in significant deviations for project schedule as well in time management. The aims of this paper is to develop an initial model of uncertainty modelling to manage the underlying causes and factors that impact in environmental issue (EI) for construction industry (CI). The uncertainty structure is also presented to show the flows of uncertainty process which will be implemented in this case study as well. The simulation modelling and experimental study will base on a real case study and will verify and validate this suggestion. The validated model might be used as guidance to construction planners and managers to plan their project schedule. Further, the decision support system model-based will be developed for enhancement to integrate all uncertainty's sources to become as a powerful system in the direction of managing the uncertainty.","PeriodicalId":386945,"journal":{"name":"2013 8th EUROSIM Congress on Modelling and Simulation","volume":"10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-09-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127303172","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper presents a real case study conducted in Egypt in which discrete-event simulation was deployed to optimize the cashier staffing policy in Egypt's largest local hyper market. SAS Simulation Studio was the cornerstone of the implementation framework that integrates several analytical tools to effectively model and analyze the real-world system behavior in an Egyptian hyper market. The framework allows examining the effect of POS staffing policy on various service performance measures (waiting time, service time, etc.) providing a means to support the store management in their quest for enhancing their customers' experience with minimal additional costs.","PeriodicalId":386945,"journal":{"name":"2013 8th EUROSIM Congress on Modelling and Simulation","volume":"36 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-09-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130658742","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Subsystems are independently solved and synchronized at coupling time instants. By the commonly used non-iterative coupling approach the extrapolation of some coupling quantities is necessary because of bidirectional dependencies between subsystems. Thus, a coupling step-size dependent coupling error is introduced. Required sampling of the coupling signals may lead to aliasing effects and unintentional discontinuities at coupling time instants occur. A recently developed coupling error compensation approach seems to be able to solve the typical problems concerning non-iterative co-simulation. However, for adequate usage of the available functionalities proper settings of the proposed coupling scheme are mandatory. In this work, the basic nearly energy-preserving coupling approach is explained and significant extensions are proposed. Especially, the resulting enhanced coupling performance enables smoothing of the coupling signals without degradation of the overall system behavior. The resulting effects as well as the specific adjustments are discussed, which leads to supporting parameterization guidelines.","PeriodicalId":386945,"journal":{"name":"2013 8th EUROSIM Congress on Modelling and Simulation","volume":"81 6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-09-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123219100","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In order to do this successfully it is necessary to understand what realistic behaviour actually is. In the world of neurological science, the Morris Water maze is frequently used as a way of testing whether mouse or rat behaviour is affected by brain lesions, drugs etc. It provides a very clean and simple environment for assessing the search patterns undertaken by a mouse swimming to find a hidden platform. Our aim is to find a simple approach to providing a realistic approximation to real mouse behaviour, in order to gain insight into general creature behaviour. A solution that combines basic behaviour with A searching showed similar behaviour to mice during training, but tended to be fragile. A genetic algorithm approach based on criteria used for assessing real mouse behaviour fails to converge to anything realistic. We have found that an ant colony model can be made to work reasonably well in replicating the real mouse training, but lacks the wider search behaviour employed by real mice when the platform is absent.","PeriodicalId":386945,"journal":{"name":"2013 8th EUROSIM Congress on Modelling and Simulation","volume":"125 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-09-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133980553","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
