The subject \u0000matter of the analysis is fi ve normative resolutions proposed by Szylarski. They \u0000concerned: 1) the use of a diacritic over a, 2) the position of ą in the alphabet; \u00003) the spelling of j before a vowel; 4) the nominative and accusative cases of \u0000singular neuter nouns ending with -ę; 5) the instrumental and locative cases \u0000of singular and instrumental case of plural masculine and neuter adjectives. \u0000Szylarski’s suggestions concerning orthography had two basic causes: one was \u0000the lack of standardised, generally accepted rules of o rthography (fl uctuations in \u0000the use of endings), the other was the incompatibility of the spelling convention \u0000and the properties of language in use (j, -ę in the fi nal position, position of ą in \u0000the alphabet, use of a diacritic over the conjunction a). An extensive material (of \u0000760 positions) was collected based on SJPD (Doroszewski’s Dictionary of Polish) \u0000and encompasses lexical units designated with chronological labels. The foreign \u0000origin of the words was verifi ed in dictionaries of foreign words. The text presents \u0000the quantitative and qualitative arrangement of lexical and semantic fi elds. The aim of the analysis was to distinguish \u0000the meanings of these units. At the lowest levels of command of Polish, analogy \u0000particles jeszcze and już and temporal exponents jeszcze and już are the most \u0000common units. The terminology found in these editions forms an organised, \u0000hierarchical structure, which was transferred from the Latin original to the Polish \u0000translation. Earlier linguistic studies \u0000paid no attention to the individuals of non-Polish descent who attended such \u0000schools. Part one of this paper presents the profi le of the examined group, which \u0000comprised, apart from persons of Polish descent, individuals of non-Polish \u0000descent, for whom Polish is a foreign language. The next part discusses the \u0000results of sociolinguistic surveys concerning the motivation for learning Polish \u0000and the level of command of the languages used by the respondents. It also \u0000presents preferences as regards the use of media and non-verbal communication. \u0000The fi nal part describes the interviewees’ attitude to the languages as well as \u0000to Poland and Ukraine. The studies were conducted using earlier research \u0000concepts regarding Polish–foreign language bilingualism by Ewa Lipińska, \u0000Władysław Miodunka, Marzena Błasiak, and Pavel Levchuk.
