It is designed to work in an integrated manner close to the corresponding motor and propeller, sharing a common cooling system and suiting the geometrical conditions within the nacelle. Some design aspects are examined in detail, such as the distributed DC-link, serving the complex geometry of the power modules with very low stray inductance. Control strategies for the symmetrical, six-phase systems are explained. Prototype measurements are given to underline some design aspects. The complete system is designed to fulfill flight requirements and is to be approved in a wind tunnel test environment.","PeriodicalId":38493,"journal":{"name":"AUS","volume":"9 1","pages":"1-6"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-03-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"79872685","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, challenges exist for such converters, due to coupling between the ports, the high number of modulation variables, and, in general, their modeling complexity. This paper discusses the operation of the quad-active bridge (QAB) and presents its improved operation by a model-free four-dimensional ripple correlation control (4D-RCC). First, fundamental component analysis of the converter is carried out for the QAB, driving a decoupling matrix that ensures good closed-loop control performance for each port individually. Then, the 4D-RCC is presented in the case of the QAB to perform an online optimization of the overall converter efficiency. The presented optimization exploits orthogonal signals for the simultaneous adjustment of the duty-cycles of the four ports of the QAB. The validation of the analytical results and the proposed optimization approach are reported by Matlab/Simulink simulations and experimental results considering a converter prototype rated 5kW.","PeriodicalId":38493,"journal":{"name":"AUS","volume":"13 1","pages":"1-6"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-03-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"83102817","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Active cell equalization circuits integrated within the architecture of Battery Management Systems (BMSs) strongly contribute in reducing and mitigating the occurrence of imbalance conditions by transferring energy between the most charged cells and the least charged ones. However, the adoption of active equalizers for lithium-ion battery systems is currently limited by incomplete knowledge regarding their actual performances and ranges of operability. In this paper, a cell equalizer based on a Multiple Active Bridge (MAB) converter has been investigated and an experimental prototype has been developed with the aim of quantitatively evaluating its performances considering different imbalance conditions. A Hardware-In-the-Loop approach based on an experimentally-calibrated lithium-ion cell has been implemented in order to correctly compare the performances of the cell equalizer avoiding the impact of thermal gradients and aging conditions among the cells. Experimental results have been carried out and different performance parameters have been defined for the analysis, including the residual voltage imbalance at the end of the equalization process, the energy efficiency and the equalization time.","PeriodicalId":38493,"journal":{"name":"AUS","volume":"10 1","pages":"1-6"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-03-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"89896876","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, the voltage balancing difficulty is the key issue of these topologies similar to diode-clamped topology under conventional PWM methods. The unbalance of capacitors voltages may affect the system integrity and stability, and may degrade harmonic performance. To sort out this issue, a simplified virtual vector PWM method to balance the dc-link capacitors voltage of four-level three-phase $pi$ -type and ANPC converters is presented in this paper. Simulation results show how easily and efficiently the proposed method can control the voltage of the capacitors for different modulation index values under balanced and unbalanced loads.","PeriodicalId":38493,"journal":{"name":"AUS","volume":"75 1","pages":"1-6"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-03-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"86354499","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Accurate voltage measurement is essential for effective battery management, ensuring safety and reliability, which is especially important in high-power battery packs that consist of multiple cells connected in series or parallel configurations, such as Electric Vehicles (EVs). This paper explores the voltage measurement topologies, pack configuration principles, and implementation of cell balancing in a lithiumion battery pack. We review the various types of faults that can occur in lithiumion batteries, different voltage sensor placement strategies, and their impact on the accuracy and robustness of voltage measurement. Our results show that proper cell balancing can improve battery performance, reduce the risk of safety incidents, and extend the battery lifespan.","PeriodicalId":38493,"journal":{"name":"AUS","volume":"53 1","pages":"1-7"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-03-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"82644058","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Dc grids are becoming common also in aircrafts and ships. The main reason is the ease of interconnection of energy sources and storage devices and the fact that the vast majority of electronic loads operate on dc. The analyzed phenomena can occur in dc distribution networks, either in low voltage (usually in airplanes and buildings) or medium voltage (in ships). The interactions depend on the front-end filters that connect the converters to the dc bus, resulting in resonances that, under certain conditions, may coincide with the converters switching frequencies. In such a situation there is an amplification of voltage or current, affecting the voltage along the feeder, resulting in a large circulation of current at high frequency. This is an issue that can affect loads and converters connected to the grid and that is difficult to identify since it occurs in frequencies beyond the frequency range usually identifies by the power quality analyzers. Simulation and experimental results are shown, based on typical converter values used in low voltage dc microgrids.","PeriodicalId":38493,"journal":{"name":"AUS","volume":"14 1","pages":"1-6"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-03-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"85248944","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, the concept of smart hybrid electric railway grid (SHERG) is presented to improve power flow capabilities, and energy efficiency and mitigate power quality issues in existing traditional AC railway networks. Different architectures of SHERG based on joint DC bus are presented and studied for AC railway systems update taking advantage of interfacing static converters.
