However, there is a danger that their coincidental timing implies that the latter is the solution to the former; that a voice assistant with a genderless voice cannot be sexist. This paper outlines how gender is not inherent in voice - listeners assign gender to voice. Also, this paper highlights that gender is constructed through a multitude of resources. Thus, a genderless voice is redundant if other elements of the voice assistant's design cause it to be gendered. I posit two take-homes; i) a change of terminology to gender ambiguous will help reframe how we think about gender in voice assistants, and ii) that we should critically engage with all potentially gendering elements in the design of voice assistants, not just the voice, in order to consider gender in a more sensitive manner.","PeriodicalId":380130,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2nd Conference on Conversational User Interfaces","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-07-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130100413","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, as we move from established models of Human Computer Interaction (HCI), namely the Graphical User Interface (GUIs) prevalent for several decades to more dynamic, socially aware forms of interaction with technology, namely CUIs, we need to fundamentally rethink how we conduct user research. Simply applying existing methodologies to these new interaction methods will not likely tackle the unique challenges posed by them.","PeriodicalId":380130,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2nd Conference on Conversational User Interfaces","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-07-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121443080","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper considers how researchers and designers might build novel and intuitive voice interfaces. We begin by briefly describing two of the key design techniques for voice design---elicitation methods and Wizard of Oz. We then describe the available tools for prototyping and implementing voice interfaces, and attempt to categorize these according to their function, ease of use, and the fidelity of prototypes they can produce. Finally, we conclude by describing three major aspects of voice communication that are not yet supported by existing prototyping tools, and motivate the need for new design tools in future work.","PeriodicalId":380130,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2nd Conference on Conversational User Interfaces","volume":"31 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-07-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132619351","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Social agents, such as conversational agents and chatbots, currently interact with people in impersonal, isolated, and often one-on-one interactions: one user and one agent. This is likely to change as agents become more socially sophisticated and integrated in social fabrics. Previous research has indicated that understanding who owns an agent can assist in creating expectations and understanding who an agent is accountable to within a group. We present findings from a three week case-study in which we implemented a chatbot that was successful in creating a sense of collective ownership within a community. We discuss the design choices that led to this outcome and implications for social agent design.","PeriodicalId":380130,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2nd Conference on Conversational User Interfaces","volume":"18 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-07-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115102031","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Design systems for conversational UX are still few and far between. Any design system should provide a distinctive philosophy, interaction patterns and content format. The Alma Design System, from IBM Research, provides these. Its design philosophy takes human conversation as its metaphor and adapts principles from conversation science, such as mutual understanding, recipient design, minimization and repair. Its pattern language provides 100 interaction patterns and components adapted from the literature of Conversation Analysis. It includes formal patterns for conversational activities and their management. And its content format consists of six slots and can be extended to any number of parts.","PeriodicalId":380130,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2nd Conference on Conversational User Interfaces","volume":"13 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-07-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125412354","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We studied the effects of two different discoverability strategies proposed in literature, one which provides informational prompts automatically and one which provides help only when the user requests it by asking 'What Can I Say?'. Our study adopted a Wizard of Oz approach that allowed users to order food delivery by voice. Through statistical analysis, we confirmed the beneficial nature of both strategies, with significantly better task performance and higher usability scores in comparison to a baseline. This suggests designers should consider the use of a discoverability strategy in the design of VUIs. While no significant differences were found between the strategies, a majority of the participants highlighted their preference for the 'What Can I Say?' strategy if they were to use the VUI more frequently. Finally, we reflect on the implications for the design of VUIs, highlighting the need to distinguish between initial use and longer-term use in the selection of a strategy.","PeriodicalId":380130,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2nd Conference on Conversational User Interfaces","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-07-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128962307","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To interact with multiple users at the same time, extensions to the two-party dialogue system framework have been explored. However, this approach either assumes that multiparty interactions can be approximated by a sequence of two-party independent conversations, or compromises the agent's capacity for individual engagement (i.e., recalling user preferences and details from previous interactions). In this work, these limitations are addressed through two novel contributions. First, we develop a module that keeps a concurrent record of conversations, where each conversation is explicitly marked as a group or individual discussion. Second, we extend the intent framework to include agent memory across multiple timescales. This allows conversational agents to reason about past interactions by recalling previously recorded intents. The practical application of the system is verified using a case study on a real-world chat-based conversational agent implementation.","PeriodicalId":380130,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2nd Conference on Conversational User Interfaces","volume":"32 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-07-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122757282","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

For measuring UX we use established UX metrics (SASSI, SUISQ-R, SUS, AttrakDiff). We investigated face validity by asking users to rate how well they think a questionnaire measures what it is supposed to measure and we assessed construct validity by correlating UX scores of questionnaires with each other. We find a mismatch between face and construct validity of the evaluated questionnaires. Specifically, users feel that SASSI represents their experience better than other questionnaires, however this is not supported by correlations between questionnaires, which suggest that all investigated questionnaires measure UX to a similar extent. Importantly, the fact that face validity and construct validity diverge is not surprising as this has been observed before. Our work adds to existing literature by providing face and construct validity scores of UX questionnaires for interactions with the common speech assistant Alexa.","PeriodicalId":380130,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2nd Conference on Conversational User Interfaces","volume":"34 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-07-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128630622","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Of these categories, today's conversational interfaces like Siri and Alexa are mainly designed to fulfill our imperatives, i.e., to respond to our requests on command. Yet, could future conversational interfaces go beyond request-response interactions? One way forward is to consider what conversational interactions allow us to do with language. Not only can we send request to CUIs, but we can also share our emotions, attitudes, beliefs, and promises as speech acts---acts we regularly perform with other humans. To open up pragmatics as an under-investigated design space for conversational technologies, I elaborate on what pragmatics and affective pragmatics are and give examples involving conversational agents. As a theoretical contribution, I provide a taxonomy from pragmatics and affective pragmatics to move beyond request-response interactions. The aim is to extend our conversational experiences with technology to cover the full spectrum of everyday speech acts. Our words can change the world; expressions to CUIs can also do so.","PeriodicalId":380130,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2nd Conference on Conversational User Interfaces","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-07-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116882634","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This has opened up interactions to people who rely on speech as a critical modality for interacting with systems. However, people with diverse speech patterns such as those who stammer are at risk of being negatively affected or excluded from speech interface interaction. In this paper, we consider what an inclusive speech interface future may look like for people who stammer. In doing so, we identify three key challenges: (1) developing effective speech recognition, (2) understanding the user experiences of people who stammer and (3) supporting speech interfaces designers through appropriate heuristics. We believe the interdisciplinary and cross-community strengths of venues like CUI are well positioned to address these challenges going forward.","PeriodicalId":380130,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2nd Conference on Conversational User Interfaces","volume":"15 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-07-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121021552","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
