The study aimed to understand the activity of mapping information into conversational systems platforms to create chatbots (text or voice-based) to attend end-users in conjunction with call centers. We interviewed eleven domain experts with non-machine learning skills responsible for curating the content of the chatbots. Additionally, we conducted four design workshops with experienced curators to understand deeper their challenges when teaching novice curators. We list a group of challenges and opportunities for improving the machine teacher's practices and supporting decision making","PeriodicalId":380130,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2nd Conference on Conversational User Interfaces","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-07-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129212145","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We argue that recent research on dialogue complexity has concentrated on already known problems and has remained rather static. We present an overview of past work and argue that increasing dialogue complexity should move again to the centre of interest of new research endeavours.","PeriodicalId":380130,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2nd Conference on Conversational User Interfaces","volume":"29 3","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-07-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"113960820","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Previous studies explored conversational agents for children and found out that they are valuable both for playing and learning. In addition, recent researches highlighted that, when we want to develop a conversational tool for children, we must consider that they have different modes from adults and they approach conversational technologies in a different way because of their linguistic skills, their way of conducting dialogues and, more generally, their interaction attitude. In this paper, we describe Smemo, a multi-modal interface for children aged 6 to 9 years old. This tool permits to approach conversational technologies in an original and multi-modal way giving the user the possibility to customize and personalize the agent. The main goal of Smemo is to promote an innovative learning method by putting children at the center of the process.","PeriodicalId":380130,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2nd Conference on Conversational User Interfaces","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-07-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115115401","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

For example, conversational systems often use female voices in subservient roles. They also exclude marginalized groups, such as non-binary individuals, altogether. Speech recognition systems also have significant gender, race and dialectal biases [14, 15, 19]. Instead, there is an opportunity for these systems to help change gender norms and promote inclusion and diversity as we continue to struggle with gender equality [10], and progress towards LGBTQ+ rights across the globe [13]. However, prior research claims that users strongly dislike voices without clear gender markers or misalignments between a voice and personality [12]. This calls for additional research to understand how voice assistants may be designed to not perpetuate gender bias while promoting user adoption.","PeriodicalId":380130,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2nd Conference on Conversational User Interfaces","volume":"25 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-07-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124323082","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

NESTORE is a virtual coach designed to support seniors during their journey to wellbeing. This virtual coach interacts with the user through two different type of conversational agents: a text-based chatbot integrated in a mobile application and a tangible coach, which is a physical object based on vocal interaction and tangible interaction. This paper presents the design of each conversational agent interface developed to support seniors in enhancing their wellbeing. A cloud conversational agent manages the user interaction with the NESTORE virtual coach, which can occur through interfaces with different design, forms and capabilities, i.e., the chatbot and the tangible coach: two different intelligent interfaces with a shared mind.","PeriodicalId":380130,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2nd Conference on Conversational User Interfaces","volume":"13 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-07-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121884132","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We explore whether this paradigm is appropriate for children and whether there are alternative, more effective ways for children to \"wake-up\" and \"put to sleep\" a conversational system. We consider seven possibilities: wake word, free-form speech, physical button, digital button, mouse, gaze, and buzzer. We propose a methodological framework of analysis based on the Multi-Attribute Value Theory (MAVT). As part of the decision-making process, we ran a study involving 42 children aged 9 to 10 who experienced the seven approaches. Our results suggest that the physical button is the most appropriate solution for this target group, which opens up new directions in the design of interaction affordances of conversational agents for children.","PeriodicalId":380130,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2nd Conference on Conversational User Interfaces","volume":"76 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-07-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117330792","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, there is a lack of empirical validation on interactive goal-oriented tasks. In our two-stage study (online listening test and lab evaluation), we compared participants' perception of the persuasiveness of synthetic voices created from speech in a debating style vs. speech from audio-books. Participants interacted with our Conversational Agent (CA) to complete 4 flight-booking tasks and were asked to evaluate the voice, message and perceived personal qualities. We found that participants who interacted with the CA using the voice created from debating style speech rated it as significantly more truthful and more involved than the CA using the audio-book-based voice. However, there was no difference in how frequently each group followed the CA's recommendations. We hope our investigation will provoke discussion about the impact of different synthetic voices on users' perceptions of CAs in goal-oriented tasks.","PeriodicalId":380130,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2nd Conference on Conversational User Interfaces","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-07-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128426808","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Thereby, emotional mimicry, i.e. imitating expressions of the person whom we are interacting with, is one of the basic mechanisms contributing to empathy. State-of-the-art speech dialogue systems still lack the ability of showing empathy, which limits naturalness. Thus, we present EmpathicSDS, a prototype to investigate the potential of lexical and acoustic mimicry for improving empathy in conversational interfaces. Our prototype comprises three different modes: 1.) neutral, where the system's response to a user query is static, 2.) lexical mimicry, where the wording of the user is reappraised by the system, and 3.) lexical and acoustic mimicry, which applies both lexical mimicry and a matching of the system's voice emotion to the user's emotional state. We conducted a user study with 33 participants to evaluate the effect of the mimicry approaches on user perception and to explore the role of user emotions. Our results show that lexical mimicry significantly improves perceived empathy and personalization without affecting efficiency. Acoustic mimicry can further improve naturalness in the condition of positive emotion while impairing efficiency in the negative condition.","PeriodicalId":380130,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2nd Conference on Conversational User Interfaces","volume":"40 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-07-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125515233","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

While this is - and will continue to be - desirable for most systems, there are also situations in which a system that prompts and questions the user may be more appropriate. In educational systems for instance, tasks are often intentionally made more challenging to enable \"deeper\" thinking and more thorough learning. Although conversational interfaces are still relatively limited in their capabilities, they seem very promising for contexts where questioning is needed, such as learning, analytics or sensemaking as well as safety-critical systems. Overly simple interactions - such as when the user can just tap or drag and drop - may not be beneficial in this context or may even be risky. In this position paper, we discuss previous work as well as opportunities where questioning users through conversation can be beneficial, based on insights from our own research.","PeriodicalId":380130,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2nd Conference on Conversational User Interfaces","volume":"17 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-07-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115155326","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
