The amount of entertainment equipment with UPnP capabilities is increasing but most appliances cannot be networked without adding a network adapter. We have built a smart home demonstrator that combines unmodified commercial products, products with modified software, legacy products with miniature embedded network adapters, and our own appliances into an integrated network, using UPnP as the common language. User interfaces are offered via browsers or dedicated interfaces on various terminals, such as TV, portable game consoles and mobile phones.","PeriodicalId":378486,"journal":{"name":"2008 IEEE International Symposium on Consumer Electronics","volume":"689 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-04-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122961053","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

ECE refers to the minimum unit module providing a service within the single system. For example, the home gateway system provides the visitor identification service. If it is the case, the main processor, the Ethernet module, the MPEG encoding module built-in camera, and etc. are needed. We classify the main ECE, the Ethernet ECE, the MPEG encoder ECE, and etc. The home gateway system provides the service like not only the visitor identification service but also Internet service, VoIP service, IPTV service and the home automation service. This kind of services can be independently carried out and be performed together with other devices. The home gateway system can save the power consumption by activating only ECE which it is necessary according to the performed service. Also, we suggest the method for saving the power consumption by controlling only ECE required based on the communication traffic. We implement the technology monitoring the communication traffic in the home gateway system through FPGA. This FPGA monitors the communication traffic and distinguishes between the user valid packet and invalid packet. The software embedded in FPGA notifies so that the high layer application can control required ECE according to the user valid packet. We show the marvelous effect for power saving through the ECE base power saving system implementation.","PeriodicalId":378486,"journal":{"name":"2008 IEEE International Symposium on Consumer Electronics","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-04-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114565743","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Service discovery technology like UPnP has limited and inflexible fault tolerance feature. Our proposed monitoring and handover mechanism enhances the functionality of UPnP eventing. It consists of a Fault Analyzing Manager which proactively monitors changes of subscribed events and determines the possible occurrence of service failure. Compared with other existing service continuity architectures, our proposed architecture is able to perform autonomous recovery action based on action list and move away from single point of failure problem. Furthermore, it offers adaptive and proactive fault detection.","PeriodicalId":378486,"journal":{"name":"2008 IEEE International Symposium on Consumer Electronics","volume":"42 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-04-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124052685","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the proposed method, the available bandwidth (AB) is estimated based on a packet pair probing technique (PPPT) that is a well-known mechanism for measuring the capacity of an end-to-end path without any information of network routers. To adapt the PPPT to the wireless network, in this paper, the cross traffic and the capacity variation of wireless link are considered to estimate the AB. We also introduce a video streaming application using the estimated AB. Experimental results show that the proposed method does not only estimate the accurate bandwidth, but also improve the performance of video streaming application over wireless networks.","PeriodicalId":378486,"journal":{"name":"2008 IEEE International Symposium on Consumer Electronics","volume":"45 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-04-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124885123","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It features an advanced audio rendering engine allowing for a realistic reproduction of the aural parts of a scene. At the same time, a graphics engine is able to render two-dimensional and three-dimensional scene objects. In this paper we present the addition of stereoscopic and autostereoscopic graphics output capabilities to the player as well as support for contemporary interaction devices. Combined with the audio rendering engine, these new features greatly enhance the realism and the level of immersion achievable.","PeriodicalId":378486,"journal":{"name":"2008 IEEE International Symposium on Consumer Electronics","volume":"10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-04-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129552833","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A various studies of deblurring have been reported. When one applies any deblurring technique, one have to appropriately set some parameters which affect the deblurring result materially. However, the appropriate parameter settings are not easy task, especially for non-experts. In this paper, we propose a high-usability deblurring filter which enables us to choose the appropriate parameters easily. First, three necessary conditions for the high-usability deblurring filter are shown. Then, we design the high-usability deblurring filter which satisfies three conditions. Experiments using real images demonstrate that the deblurring effect of the proposed filter can be controlled linearly to the single parameter.","PeriodicalId":378486,"journal":{"name":"2008 IEEE International Symposium on Consumer Electronics","volume":"50 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-04-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125474558","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Hence, a large number of audio and video files are stored on the users hard disks and on popular video community platforms. Due to the lack of suitable or disobeyed metadata standards, the description of these data is often missing or misleading. Therefore, audio and visual identification algorithms have been developed, which identify videos or pieces of music and provide a suitable metadata description or copyright information based on a content database. Integrating both information, the visual and the audio part of the video for simultaneous identification is called cross-modal processing. In this paper the principle structure of an audio and a visual identification system is identified and different state-of-the-art algorithms are discussed. Furthermore, a cross-modal system is presented and especially the cross aggregation is discussed. Finally, current use cases for audio, visual and cross-modal search and retrieval are depicted.","PeriodicalId":378486,"journal":{"name":"2008 IEEE International Symposium on Consumer Electronics","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-04-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128308050","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
