Handovers in mobile communications systems such as GSM or UMTS make use of a bi-directional connection between the terminal and the network infrastructure. Such bi-directional connections provide more possibilities and can significantly increase the probability of successful handovers without any interruption in service consumption. This paper proposes a novel handover mechanism for DVB-H terminals. DVB-H terminals typically have access to a cellular telephone network which is proposed to be used as an interactivity channel to improve the performance of DVB-H cell handovers.","PeriodicalId":378486,"journal":{"name":"2008 IEEE International Symposium on Consumer Electronics","volume":"49 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-04-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131306280","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Currently, many companies try to develop advanced DVR systems and add new state-of-the-art functions to them like motion detection, image enhancement, etc. One of the most important factors of the DVR systems is fault-tolerant, which is the ability to record, playback and store video data into a storage device without interruption or data loosing. In this paper, we propose a fault-tolerant DVR system that supports the MPEG-4 codec for high video compression ratio on the embedded PowerPC processor. Our fault- tolerant DVR system guarantees consumers against losing recorded video data by applying our new file system and overwriting policy. And a graphic user interface with various functionalities can well satisfy consumers' demands.","PeriodicalId":378486,"journal":{"name":"2008 IEEE International Symposium on Consumer Electronics","volume":"39 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-04-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121036866","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Although it is an intelligent development, it is hard to find a standard for measuring auto flash performance. In this study, we present a new auto flash performance measurement. For auto flash performance evaluation, we select the exposure accuracy that affects image quality when exposure failure occurs. For exposure accuracy, these are the methods of measurement. At first, we select the auto flash exposure accuracy that depends on object distance. It evaluates when auto flash measures the equivalent luminance of the same object depending on diverse object distance within the auto flash valid range. The next is auto flash accuracy that depends on object luminance. And lastly, a test of auto flash accuracy that depends on ambient lighting is conducted. Auto flash can recognize ambient lighting and measure the accurate object luminance.","PeriodicalId":378486,"journal":{"name":"2008 IEEE International Symposium on Consumer Electronics","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-04-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130617511","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Active listening is the basic concept for a novel generation of interactive music systems, which are particularly addressed to the general users. A key focus is on content personalization and context awareness in the framework of mobile music applications. This paper discusses the research challenges that need to be faced for developing systems and devices for active listening in shared, distributed, and social collaborative environments. It also illustrates a first concrete application demonstrated in a multimodal interactive dance/music installation ldquoMappe per Affetti Errantirdquo, that we presented at our site in Casa Paganini, Genova, Italy, in the framework of ldquoFestival delta Scienzardquo, an international science exhibit held in October November 2007. It aims at a low-cost high-throughput design for HD1080 (1920 times 1088) at 60 frames per second (fps) in High Profile (HP) H.264/AVC codec with Level 4.2. For this, deterministic processing loops control scheme and a novel 4 times 4 processing order substituting for the conventional double-Z one are presented to attain a high-throughput design. In addition, for maximizing hardware utilization and getting a low-cost design, two processing elements dedicated to motion vector derivation are presented. Although many aspects of the standard were fixed during its definition [1], the final election on the video data encapsulation was left to the broadcasters. Nowadays most DVB-H terminals (including a growing number of adapted mobile phones and PDAs) are designed to provide basic compatibility with AVC/H.264 [2] raw streams over Realtime Transport Protocol (RTP) [3] and other encapsulation methods of the video are left for specific laboratory models. The use of encapsulation standards brings several advantages like in-depth multiplexing of several audio and video streams on the same channel, addition of live interactive information, easy inclusion of subtitles, additional error protection, etc. Since a lot of encapsulation standards have been released in the past years, and each one of them has its own characteristics to suit different technical environments, the election between them is not obvious. In this paper we shall analyze the exiting standards on encapsulation and develop several test (real, with a complete DVB-H platform, and simulated, with a PC based programmable environment) to achieve conclusions on which encapsulation format is more suitable to be used in DVB-H broadcasting so its adoption by the consumer electronics market and mobile terminals manufacturers can be achieved with the lowest cost assumptions.","PeriodicalId":378486,"journal":{"name":"2008 IEEE International Symposium on Consumer Electronics","volume":"26 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-04-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132794869","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

TTBS focuses on the QoS provisioning that each node can successfully transfer the same packet to all the other nodes within its communication range simultaneously (broadcast traffic) without the overhead due to the re-computation of transmission schedules when the network topology changes. For broadcast traffic, the MAC layer acknowledgment cannot be applied to provide reliable transmission because the replied acknowledgment packets may suffer conflicts. In order to ensure that all the intended nodes successfully receive the broadcast packet without adopting the MAC layer acknowledgment, TTBS is achieved by transmitting the same packet in all of a nodepsilas assigned slots during a frame (IEEE Trans. Veh. TechnoL, Vol. 52, No. 4, p. 970, 2003). As a result, each node can successfully broadcast only one packet per frame, which is inefficient in terms of bandwidth usage and throughput. To address the problem, we introduce in this paper the use of maximum-distance-separable (MDS) erasure coding to improve the performance of TTBS. By analysis, results for the optimal parameters achieving the best performance are derived for the resulting TTBS. Compared numerical results show that the proposed scheme outperforms the existing one for most of broadcast traffic loads.","PeriodicalId":378486,"journal":{"name":"2008 IEEE International Symposium on Consumer Electronics","volume":"12 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-04-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114692854","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In general, the buffering scheme of streaming service is used to compensate for delay jitter of networks. By the way, the terminal, which is served from wireless communication systems, can explore the discontinuation of receiving streaming packets during handover. Especially, in case of inter-system handover, the discontinuation of receiving packets is longer than that of intra-system handover. Therefore, existing buffering schemes cannot fully compensate for the degradation of QoS. The proposed method of this paper is an additional buffering scheme before handover. Using this method, we can prevent the discontinuation of streaming service during handover. This method is validated through simulations.","PeriodicalId":378486,"journal":{"name":"2008 IEEE International Symposium on Consumer Electronics","volume":"97 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-04-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132269546","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
