The general objective of the study was: To investigate the role of public procurement preference schemes in enhancing the growth of small and medium-sized enterprises in Nyamira County, Kenya. The specific objectives included; establishing the role of 30% preference on the growth of small and medium-sized enterprises, to investigate the role of waiver of bid bond on the growth of small and medium-sized enterprises, to establish the role of local firm preference on the growth of small and medium-sized enterprises and to assess the role of easy access to procurement opportunities registration on the growth of small and medium-sized enterprises. The study was guided by agency theory. A descriptive research design was applied to the study. The study population included 35700 registered and licensed SMEs, from where a sample of 391 was arrived at by Yamane’s formula. Data collection involved the use of self-administered questionnaires. Both descriptive and inferential statistics were used to perform data analysis. The results of the model summary indicate that R2 equals 0.498 at a 0.05 significance level, thus revealing that 49.8 % of the SME growth can be accounted for by the public procurement preference scheme. The study concluded that there was a positive influence of public procurement preference schemes on the growth of small and medium-sized enterprises. The study recommended that SMEs may team up with one another under joint bidding in order to get higher chances of preference and also compete with large-sized firms for public procurement opportunities","PeriodicalId":378318,"journal":{"name":"East African Journal of Business and Economics","volume":"76 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-08-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123209971","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, such studies have yielded inconsistent results on various facets of market structure and market conduct, implying that each market may have its distinctive characteristics which impact on its performance. In Sub-Saharan Africa, the growth of sweet potato industry is hindered by lack of information on sweet potato market structural characteristics. Kenya’s sweet potato industry is facing a similar challenge. This scenario calls for a baseline survey on the sweet potato market structural characteristics and conduct as a basis for subsequent robust studies on the possible nexus between the market structure, conduct and performance of the industry. The study adopted a descriptive survey design based on interpretivism research paradigm. A sample size of 384 farmers, 166 retailers and 55 wholesalers were taken. Pretested questionnaires were used to gather perception of the respondents on various parameters based on a five-point Likert scale. The views were then summarized in terms of means scores. It was established that the sweet potato market was imperfect since there were notable elements of potato differentiation and barriers to entry into the market. Such barriers included competition from other traders and uncertainties in the demand for sweet potato. The situation was exacerbated by lack of suitable storage facilities given the perishable nature of the commodity. High market concentration was noted at the wholesale level, a likely indicator of price collusion and exploitation by the few large sellers that dominated the market. In this regard, there is need to enhance value addition activities that can enable the market players especially the farmers to be more competitive within the supply chain. Efforts should also be made to eliminate the identified market barriers","PeriodicalId":378318,"journal":{"name":"East African Journal of Business and Economics","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-07-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131866291","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The success of group lending in providing credit to poor borrowers has been attributed to its ability to mitigate the asymmetry of information and enforcement problems in credit markets. The ability of group lending institutions to overcome the asymmetry of information and enforcement problems has been theorised to be the driving force behind their outreach to the poor, their sustainability, and their repayment performance. While there is a host of theoretical models explaining the success of group lending, empirical research has lagged behind. The focus of this study was to explore the determinants of group lending mechanisms on the enterprise development of rural women in the Nyamache sub-county, Kenya. The study targeted the rural women development groups that access loans as a group within Nyamache Sub-County. The total target population comprised 781 members, and by using Krejcie and Morgan’s table of determining sample size, the sample size consisted of 260 respondents. Questionnaires were used. The questionnaires were edited first for accuracy and completeness. The study used frequency distribution and percentages and computer software-Statistical Package for Social Scientists version 22 (SPSS v 22) as a tool for analysing data and establishing relationships between variables. It is feasible that an economy on the right course of attaining sustainable development goals could flourish in human richness. Kenya endeavours to advance the wellbeing of her people. There has been a rise in human development from 0.468 human development index in 1990 to 0.575 in 2021. This is a 22.86% increase. However, this is low compared to economies with high levels of human development. Kenya is classified at the medium level, below the standards stipulated by the United Nations Development Programme. This classification recommends economies have a high or very high human development index. Numerous studies in Kenya have focused on foreign remittances and education expenditure. This offers diminutive consideration to remittances and human development. This paper seeks to fill this gap by focusing on foreign remittances, education index and human development. This area has only received derisory attention even though foreign remittance has been one of the crucial financial foreign inflows in the country. The paper espouses a non-experimental research design to explain the effects of foreign remittances on human development by dint of education index conduit. The vector error correction model, a cointegrated vector autoregression model, is applied in this research to analyse data. This establishes a short-term relationship between foreign remittances and the education index while correcting the deviation from the long-term movement of these variables. Secondary time series data for the period 1990 to 2021 is used. Statistical analysis was conducted using E-views statistical package. This paper concludes that foreign remittances in Kenya have negative and significant effects on the education index in the short run. This indicates that a vast amount of remittances received in Kenya are not channelled to educational purposes. The long-run impact is statistically inconclusive.","PeriodicalId":378318,"journal":{"name":"East African Journal of Business and Economics","volume":"6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-07-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127962839","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

For instance, as of December 2017, the Development Bank of Kenya posted a negative liquidity position at 21.6% against the required legal threshold of 20%. For the National Bank of Kenya, the close of 2017 saw the total deposit liability standing at negative 5.5%, while core capital to total assets averaged negative 7.9%. As of 2018, NBK registered a drop in profit by 84% to stand at Kshs. 21.97 billion. The findings were that liquidity ratio requirements (β=0.345, p<0.05); cash reserve ratio requirement β=-0.008, p<0.05); loan deposit ratio requirement (β=-0.020, p<0.05) & capital adequacy ratio requirement (β=0.032, p<0.05) are significant predictors of financial performance of commercial banks in Kenya. The study concludes that liquidity requirements are a significant predictor of the financial performance of commercial banks in Kenya. The study recommends that finance managers of commercial banks in Kenya should strive to balance current assets and current liabilities to ensure they meet their obligations as they arise. The marketing managers of commercial banks in Kenya should invest more efforts in acquiring more customers for increased mobilisation of deposits. The loan officers and credit managers working in the commercial banks in Kenya should speed up the process of credit appraisal of customer loan application process to increase the uptake of loans which are key sources of interest income to these institutions. The shareholders of the commercial banks in Kenya should ensure that their institutions are adequately capitalised so that they are able to withstand inherent shocks occasioned by liquidity constraints likely to negatively impact financial performance. The findings are expected to shed more light on the critical role played by liquidity requirements as far as financial stability and resilience of the banking sector in Kenya are concerned","PeriodicalId":378318,"journal":{"name":"East African Journal of Business and Economics","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-07-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122052270","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, most of the government’s efforts have been concentrated on the development of international tourism. This focus has resulted in considerable growth in the country’s most significant contributor to the national economy. While the impact of domestic tourism has been addressed in the latest developed Rwanda’s National Tourism Strategy, the initiatives set forward have had minimal effects. This paper aimed to address the issue of an increased focus on domestic tourism contribution in developing the economy of Rwanda besides international tourism. The rationale for this paper supports a strong motivation for a more dedicated approach by Rwanda’s tourism stakeholders (public and private) to develop the country’s domestic tourism market alongside the international market with reference to the national parks of Rwanda. The population under this study was composed of three different groups of respondents at three national parks in Rwanda. These were local residents living adjacent to the three national parks under study; the park authorities and government officials (policymakers) in tourism and conservation-related matters, and tourism and conservation experts. The researcher developed a structured questionnaire that was administered to the selected respondents. The administration of the questionnaire was done by the researcher with the help of three research assistants. The researcher used descriptive analysis to analyse the data.  The data collected using the open-ended questions were analysed using content analysis. The study established that domestic tourism is yet to be developed in Rwanda. The study also reported that domestic tourism has the potential of leading to significant economic development by supplementing revenue generated by foreign tourists","PeriodicalId":378318,"journal":{"name":"East African Journal of Business and Economics","volume":"16 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-07-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129901173","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Kenyan county administrations have been carrying out development projects since 2013, but the completion of some of the development projects has faced serious implementation challenges. This study analysed the monitoring and evaluation practices that influence the implementation of a project that is financed by funds from the government. The targeted population comprised 113 staff working in the selected five departments in Meru County Government that deal with projects at the sub-county level. A sample size of 92 staff participated in the study. Staff was selected using the proportionate stratified together with a simple random sampling technique, while all heads of department were purposively picked. A questionnaire was distributed to staff while HODs were interviewed. Piloting enabled checking the reliability and validity of instruments. The mean and standard deviation helped to summarise the collected data. The results indicated that project funding, competencies of a project manager, employee capacity building and community participation were empirically confirmed to have significant weight on the successful implementation of projects. The study noted that reliable revenue streams, standards, best practices, and a well-designed financial plan are essential for the successful implementation of projects. The study recommends the need for the county government to allocate sufficient funding at the project’s inception to facilitate the acquisition of requisite equipment and finance initial operational activities. The government departments at the county level should prioritise enhancing the project management skills of staff involved in projects. The finishing of the identified projects is indispensable; hence, the results will change the manner in which government-funded projects are implemented by the county government.","PeriodicalId":378318,"journal":{"name":"East African Journal of Business and Economics","volume":"40 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-07-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128879968","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Controller of Budget and Auditor General Offices state that County Governments continue to face governance, integrity, accountability, and transparency difficulties in the administration of public resources despite better legal and institutional frameworks on public financial management. The research targeted 100 staff at the County Treasury, comprising the Assistant Directors, Finance Officers, Internal Auditors, Accountants and Procurement Officers. Primary data was collected using structured questionnaires, while secondary data was collected through document analysis from the financial reports compiled by the offices of the Controller of Budget (COB), Auditor General (OAG) and County Treasury. Participants were selected using a census-style technique. The questionnaires and research questions were pilot tested to guarantee their accuracy. Frequencies and percentages were utilised for descriptive statistics, whereas Pearson Correlation Coefficients were used for inferential purposes. Figures and tables were used to display the data. The data were analysed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) and Microsoft Excel. The study revealed that financial planning and budgeting reforms (r=0.705), revenue mobilisation reforms (r=0.655), internal control reforms (r=0.722), and public procurement reforms (r=0.535) positively influenced the performance of the Kisii County Government. The research finds that Public Procurement reforms’ performance is impacted by how well they are implemented.
