The paper also examines the mediating role of process innovation in the relationship between trust and supply chain performance in Tanzania. Drawing from social exchange theory and relational exchange theory, the research posits that, there is a crucial link between trust and supply chain performance. The paper is hence guided by four hypotheses: H1, there is a positive and significant relationship between trust and supply chain performance. H2, there is a positive and significant relationship between process innovation and supply chain performance. H3, there is a positive and significant relationship between trust and process innovation. H4, process innovation mediates the relationship between trust and supply chain performance. The study collected survey data from 262 top managers of 128 companies involved in exporting agricultural products in Tanzania. Inferential statistics were used to assess the relationship between the variables. The findings suggest that both trust and process innovation have a positive and significant effect on supply chain performance. Additionally, the study found that process innovation mediates the relationship between trust and supply chain performance. The current study is unique in its analysis of the influence of group trust on supply chain performance and the mediation role of process innovation, which has received little attention in previous studies.","PeriodicalId":378318,"journal":{"name":"East African Journal of Business and Economics","volume":"17 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133969965","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This necessitates that customers are aware of their rights in relation to complaint procedures so that they can take appropriate action in accordance with the regulations. To prevent the exploitation of Kenyan consumers, the Consumer Protection Act was passed. However, Kenyans continue to encounter deceptive advertisements, unethical business practices, inflated electricity and water bills, and lack of product information, among other business malpractices. Thus, this study sought to investigate factors influencing the level of awareness and knowledge of the Consumer Protection Act (CPA) among household consumers in Nairobi County with a focus on Southlands Estate, Langa’ta. The specific objectives are; to evaluate the influence of culture and ii) to assess the influence of the nature of the law on household consumers’ level of awareness and knowledge of CPA. Descriptive research methods were used for the study. The 417 respondents were drawn from the Southlands Estate in Lang'ata and were the primary focus of the survey. Simple random sampling was used to choose a total of 42 participants for the study. The questionnaire was the primary source of information. SPSS was used to analyse the quantitative data. Relationship testing between culture, the type of the law, and the dependant variable was performed using inferential statistics (level of awareness and knowledge of the Consumer Protection Act among household consumers). The model summary revealed that culture and nature of law contribute 44% to household consumers’ level of awareness and knowledge of the Consumer Protection Act. The study results indicate a positive and significant relationship between culture, the nature of law and household consumers’ awareness and knowledge of CPA. The study recommends that customers must therefore raise their degree of awareness in order to engage in rational purchasing behaviour and make informed decisions. There is also a need for sensitising consumers to the content in the Consumer Protection Act.","PeriodicalId":378318,"journal":{"name":"East African Journal of Business and Economics","volume":"46 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-03-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128057322","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A policy aimed at reallocating such underemployed labour to higher productivity activities plays a role in tackling the unemployment problem and is a top priority for policymakers. This study examines the asymmetric effects of differential sectoral growth on unemployment in Uganda, considering both the size and composition effect of sectoral growth. The results of this study indicated that a positive shock in agricultural sector value added has a positive causal effect on unemployment. Also, a positive and negative shock in the industrial sector does not affect the level of unemployment. Finally, both a positive and negative shock in the service sector value added has a negative effect on the unemployment level. Another interesting finding of this study is that both the size and composition of sectoral growth matter in addressing the unemployment problem in Uganda. Therefore, both positive and negative shocks should be forecasted and incorporated in government planning frameworks for short, medium, and long particularly during manpower planning. However, sectors with higher labour intensity should be prioritized in budgetary allocations, the government should devise means of reducing underemployment of labour trapped in low-productivity agriculture and other small-scale production activities to create meaningful employment.","PeriodicalId":378318,"journal":{"name":"East African Journal of Business and Economics","volume":"33 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-03-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132424041","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study used secondary data extracted from the annual reports of 12 listed firms in Nigeria during the period 2011 – 2020. The study employed Tobin’s Q as a proxy of firm performance, while Board size, Independence, diligence, gender diversity, and ethnic diversity are employed as the proxies of board characteristics. The Pooled Ordinary Least Square regression (POLS) and panel fixed effect regression methods were used to analyse the data collected. Findings revealed that board size and board ethnic diversity exerts a statistically significant negative influence on DMBs' financial performance, board independence has a negative and non-significant effect on DMBs financial performance, while board diligence and gender diversity have a positive non-significant effect on DMBs' financial performance. The study recommends among others that board size be carefully analysed by shareholders and balanced according to the expected result, board independence be continuously maintained and periodically reviewed, a maximum of 6 board meetings excluding emergency meetings be held annually; board members should consist of at least half gender diversity, and finally, ethnic heterogeneity be allowed on the boards of Nigerian firms for equity, fair representation, and relative peace","PeriodicalId":378318,"journal":{"name":"East African Journal of Business and Economics","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121350185","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Drawing from AMO theory, social exchange theory, and socio-emotional selectivity theory, we hypothesise that, first, the utilisation of high-performance work systems in an organisation is positively associated with future time perspective; second, the utilisation of high-performance work systems in an organisation is positively associated with the innovative work behaviours of employees in the organisation, and third, future time perspective mediates the relationship between high-performance work systems and innovative work behaviours of employees in a workplace. The findings of this cross-level study constitute 152 respondents from the company level (business unit level) and 220 respondents from the employee level. The results provide empirical evidence that high-performance work systems have a significant and positive effect on future time perspective, high-performance work systems have a positive and significant effect on innovative work behaviour and, importantly, future time perspective has a partial mediation in the relationship between high-performance work system and innovative work behaviour. The practical implications of the study are that managers need to effectively implement HPWS practices to encourage employees to be innovative as mediated by their perception of future prospects. Through this adoption and utilisation of HPWS, organisations can enhance innovative work behaviours amongst employees and therefore organisational performance.","PeriodicalId":378318,"journal":{"name":"East African Journal of Business and Economics","volume":"44 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-02-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132116756","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
