As this topic has been of great importance lately, the corpus study of media texts with HEALTH can reveal verbal means of how this lemma is depicted by journalists as well as what urgent social concerns are connected with HEALTH and what issues reader are aware of.\u0000\u0000The research is aimed at studying collocations with HEALTH in The Guardian and The Mirror newspapers, focusing on the comparative analysis of them presented in the broadsheet and tabloid. Sketch Engine has been used to investigate the lemma HEALTH in both newspapers, which helps to disclose the linguistic means used to outline the concept HEALTH.\u0000\u0000The findings of the study prove that despite the use of modifiers and verbs with HEALTH common for both newspapers (e.g., mental, physical, public; improve, protect, affect), the Mirror presents a wider choice of collocations with HEALTH compared to The Guardian, whereas the lexeme HEALTH is more frequently used in the latter ‒ 2,367.84 per million as to 1,615.61 per million in the first one. Furthermore, the tabloid presents a larger range of health subjects while the broadsheet displays a narrower area of the topic with a more conservative point of view.

In the framework of literary gerontology the author of the article studies current views on the subject provided by British scolars (M.Hepworth, M.Mangan, J.King). A sociological perspective suggests a methodological instrument of the solidary-conflict model as an emergent construct of intergenetational ambivalence (Giarrusso, Bengtson, Lowenstein). The topic of the research is the study of specifics of intergenerational relationships between aging parents and their adult children in plays by Horton Foote, Preston Jones and Stephen Guirgis. The topic is relevant to the increasing interest to the aging studies. The goal is to understand better the difficulties of late adulthood in intergenerational conflicts and the ways of their solution. The thorough analysis of the texts in question demonstrates the efficiency of the solidarity-conflict model in the system of characters. Some elderly protagonists (Carrie Watts and Walter “Pops”) take journeys literally and psychologically. On the basis of Waxman’s concept of Reifungsroman the author of the article claims that metaphorical journeys lead the main characters to self-development and self-knowledge in their old age. The methods used in the paper are mixed: historical data processing, analyses of interdisciplinary resources (literary gerontology, social gerontology, age studies, age psychology, etc). The innovative solution lies in the application of interdisciplinary approach to close reading of drama texts. The results can be practical for classes of US literature and social gerontology. The findings of the paper inform of the intergenerational interaction on behalf of older parents in their widowhood. A promising application will be to study the specifics of intergenerational conflicts beoynd the context of the family: e.g., in the professional ambiance provided by the play “First Monday in October” by Lawrence and Lee.

One of the most reliable corpus-based methods is the collostruction analysis, developed by A. Stefanowitsch and S. Th. Gries. Through statistical corpus analysis, this method examines semantics of grammatical construction by measuring the degree of mutual association/ repulsion between a construction and lexical items flling its main slot. This paper demonstrates the feasibility of applying the collostructional analysis to study semantics of one type of the English unaugmented detached construction with explicit subject, a non-fnite construction of a binary structure consisting of a (pro)nominal subject and Participle I as a predicate, as in [ВКЕС [Subj cheeks][Pred burning suddenly]].\u0000Using R statistical software and the script for the collostructional analysis on empirical data drawn from the BNC-BYU corpus, we identify verbs, which reveal signifcant attraction to the predicate slot. The semantic analysis of the most strongly attracted verbs allows determining the semantic verb classes most closely associated with the given construction. It appears that the construction particularly attracts verbs involving the body, verbs of emission, verbs of motion, verbs of existence, touch verbs, and verbs of perception.\u0000These verbs belong to the aspectual classes of state and process. The analysis proves that the semantics of the construction [ВКЕС with-less[Subj general noun][Verb Participle І]] sets restrictions on flling its predicate slot with only those verbs whose arguments are compatible with the semantic roles defned by the construction. In its prototypical meaning the analyzed detached construction verbalizes a scenario in which Agent (the subject of the matrix clause) has a Partitive (the subject of the construction) in State/ Process (expressed by the predicate of the construction — Participle I).\u0000The evidence from the study suggests that the collostructional analysis substantially advances our\u0000understanding of grammatical constructions and their meaning. Clearly, these are only preliminary fndings and further studies regarding collostructional semantics of other types of English detached constructions with explicit subject would be worthwhile.
