Unfortunately, such systems have not found much use outside of the laboratory because of high cost and sophisticated system software. This paper will present how the force/torque sensor has been implemented in robotic applications such as grinding/deburring, drilling and assembly for industry and military. The research developments concerning transducers, ranging and imaging at the University of Nottingham are presented. The ranging system possess a unique operating specification which allows long range measurement at adequate resolution and extremely fine resolution at closer distances.
