The concept is based on support vector machine (SVM) classifier and multiple-input and multiple-output (MIMO) model predictive control (MPC) on the high penetration renewable power system. To achieve the objective, the voltage stability condition of the power system is predicted by the SVM classifier first, using measured synchrophasor data in the power system. Next, the control strategy is triggered by the prediction results. The designed auxiliary MPC strategy will augment the existing control variables aiming to keep transient voltage stability. To validate the proposed approach, the Kundur two-area power system with a wind plant is built and the numerical results demonstrate the feasibility, effectiveness and accuracy of the proposed method.","PeriodicalId":370712,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE Symposium on Power Electronics and Machines for Wind and Water Applications","volume":"99 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-07-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132560156","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The combinations of different types of energy storage systems and control strategies have been proposed in the literature in order to improve the power quality coming from the wind turbines. In the current paper, a novel neural network based control system is proposed for the entire wind farm with distributed storage system. Storage is integrated in every wind turbine (WT) in the wind farm and proposed control system reduces the total output power fluctuations by using the available energy storage distributed among the wind turbines in a cooperative manner. For the verification of the proposed control method a Simulink model for a wind farm containing 100 wind turbines was developed and simulated.","PeriodicalId":370712,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE Symposium on Power Electronics and Machines for Wind and Water Applications","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-07-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129780543","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, a fundamental problem associated with these machines is their large size that makes them difficult to manufacture, transport, and assemble. This paper introduces the concept of segmented permanent magnet (PM) synchronous machines with both single and dual stator/rotor layers that feature a modular structure which makes them appealing candidates for use in direct-drive wind generators. To form a multi-phase machine, a spatial phase-shifting iron piece is inserted between adjacent segments to maintain the appropriate spatial positioning between phases. The segmentation strategy for this type of machine is discussed, considering the trade-offs between average torque production and torque ripple. A nine-phase segmented PM synchronous machine configuration is proposed for reducing torque ripple and improving fault-tolerance capabilities. The performance characteristics of this segmented machine configuration are evaluated using finite element (FE) analysis.","PeriodicalId":370712,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE Symposium on Power Electronics and Machines for Wind and Water Applications","volume":"210 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-07-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123481041","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the system, the stator is directly connected to the grid while the rotor is connected to the grid through the back-to-back converter. Typically, both the stator and grid-side converter currents are controlled to be in-phase with the grid voltage for unity power factor in grid. However, it is not the optimal solution, considering the energy efficiency. The losses can be reduced under the condition of the minimum copper loss (MCL) operation. In this paper, the optimal set of rotor current commands is calculated from the analysis of torque and power properties. In this case, the grid-side converter takes the role of the reactive power compensation for unity power factor in grid. So, the required amount of the converter current is also estimated. For the MCL operation, the proposed method manipulates the d-q rotor currents and d-axis converter current while the grid power factor, speed, and dc link voltage are simultaneously controlled. The feasibility and MCL tracking performance of the proposed control system are verified by simulations under various operating conditions.","PeriodicalId":370712,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE Symposium on Power Electronics and Machines for Wind and Water Applications","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-07-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129742170","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The mechanical, thermal, and electrical analyses can be utilized to detect the faults, which are coming from the wind generators by monitoring the changes in their characteristics under different (normal and abnormal) operation conditions. Observing the trend of the electrical torque pulsations of the wind generators under different conditions is beneficial to perform proper condition monitoring. In this paper, different methodology has been adopted to implement a proper condition monitoring system on the wind generators by evaluating the generator electrical torque based on the mechanical and the acceleration torque. Then, in order to specify the generator faults, the trend of the electrical torque with respect to the rotor angular speed of the wind generator under different operation conditions is analyzed. Further, the rate of change in the generator temperature is considered as well as an indicator to define the health of the wind generators with respect to the induced electrical torque, because of the negative effect of the elevated generator temperature on the induced electrical torque. Case study, which is based upon collected data from actual measurements, is presented in this work in order to demonstrate the adequacy of the proposed model.","PeriodicalId":370712,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE Symposium on Power Electronics and Machines for Wind and Water Applications","volume":"69 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-07-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116751000","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

For a grid with high wind penetration, wind power plants (WPPs) are required to have the capability to maintain the voltage at the point of common coupling (PCC). Wind generators in a WPP produce the different active power due to the wake effects and consequently contain different reactive power availability. This paper proposes a voltage control scheme of a doubly-fed induction generator (DFIG)-based WPP using the adaptive reactive power-voltage (Q-V) characteristic of DFIGs. The WPP controller calculates a voltage error signal using a PI controller and sends it to each DFIG. From the voltage error signal, the DFIG injects the reactive power based on its adaptive Q-V characteristic, which depends on the available reactive power. The proposed scheme adjusts the Q-V characteristic depending on the operating condition of a DFIG. The proposed scheme enables the WPP to recover the PCC voltage to the nominal value within a short time after a disturbance by utilizing the reactive power capability of a WPP. The performance of the scheme was investigated for a 100 MW WPP consisting of 20 units of a 5 MW DFIG for a grid fault condition. The results show the proposed scheme successfully recovers the PCC voltage within a short time after a disturbance.","PeriodicalId":370712,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE Symposium on Power Electronics and Machines for Wind and Water Applications","volume":"80 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-07-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126906822","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

For the development and certification purpose, a 1 MW test-rig for WT nacelles has been developed at RWTH Aachen University which offers the possibility of WT testing with emulated environmental conditions. In this paper, the performance characteristics of a doubly-fed-generator (DFG) on the developed test-rig is discussed. Firstly, the effect of filter impedance of the grid emulator on the controller performance is analyzed under normal grid conditions. Secondly, the transient characteristic of a DFG WT considering the grid emulator setup is identified. A simulation is performed to verify the analysis. Under normal grid condition, the impedance of the grid emulator does not influence the controller of the DFG WT significantly. For fault-ride-through (FRT) tests with a grid emulator, only the series inductive elements of the grid emulator's filter influence the transient characteristic of the DFG WT. The developed 1-MW test-rig fulfills the technical requirement for FRT test in terms of the grid impedance.","PeriodicalId":370712,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE Symposium on Power Electronics and Machines for Wind and Water Applications","volume":"41 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-07-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134471633","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
