For mid IR region ZnGeP/sub 2/ crystals have excellent potential for application in nonlinear optics due to unique combination of physical properties. In 1987 second harmonics generation (SHG) efficiency of 49% was realized with this crystal pumped by 2-ns pulses of CO/sub 2/-laser with intensity /spl sim/ 1GW/cm/sup 2/. In the present work SHG was investigated with the ZnGeP/sub 2/ crystals pumped by CO/sub 2/-laser pulses with much higher radiation intensities. To prevent the crystal surface optical damage we applied the significantly shorten laser pulse duration as compared with known data. In our experiments CO/sub 2/-laser system \"Picasso-2\" was used generating the train of pulses with duration 20 - 100 ps and total energy up to 15 J. The system provided laser intensity up to 100 GW/cm/sub 2/ at the crystal samples surface /spl sim/15 /spl times/15 mm/sup 2/. Optical fibers have supported this increase of the demand through the increase of its transmission capacity. Many researchers consider that the future of the long distance optical transmissions could be the combination of WDM techniques and soliton transmission. This paper tells, in summarized way, the work that is being accomplished in the Presbyterian University Mackenzie in the area of optical communications, more specifically in the soliton transmission of 40 Gbit/s rates and long distances. The distributed Raman amplification (DRA) is used to compensate the attenuation of the optical fiber. Long distances up to 50.000 km are investigated, using simulations works. No relevant distortions in the pulse shapes were detected in pulse width of 1,55 ps.","PeriodicalId":368970,"journal":{"name":"5th International Workshop on Laser and Fiber-Optical Networks Modeling, 2003.
