Among the numerous specific properties of whispering gallery (WG) waves the most important one for the problem considered is that the WG group velocity can be much less than the velocity of light. As a result, the energy density in the WG wave and, consequently, the electric field strength which determines the increase in the refraction index in the wave appears to be much greater than in an ordinary wave of the same power. This property allows one to observe the self-action of WG waves under much less power. In this work, an ability of the WG waves to form closed waveguides of various type in the air is considered. These waveguides confine propagation of WG waves in a certain closed region. In this case, nonlinear effects with great time constant can manifest themselves too.","PeriodicalId":368970,"journal":{"name":"5th International Workshop on Laser and Fiber-Optical Networks Modeling, 2003. The self-action of a light beam of the Gaussian profile with a distribution of elliptical polarization uniform in the cross-section in a nonabsorbing medium with spatial dispersion of cubic nonlinearity has been investigated numerically. We have analyzed the dependences of the intensity, the degree of ellipticity and the rotation angle of the main axis of a beam polarization ellipse on the transverse coordinates and length of the medium. It has been established that nonlocality of a nonlinear optical response of the isotropic medium and elliptical polarization of incident radiation strongly affect the threshold conditions of self-focusing and substantially change the character of propagation of Gaussian beams.","PeriodicalId":368970,"journal":{"name":"5th International Workshop on Laser and Fiber-Optical Networks Modeling, 2003. The aim of this work lies in application of full-vector WIM to optical analysis of hot-cavity VCSEL for mode parameters extraction. It is concluded that the computational results presented in this work suggest the weighted-index method as a powerful technique for optical analysis of realistic and complicated VCSEL structures. The improvement directions for decreasing computational error and taking diffraction losses into account have been indicated.","PeriodicalId":368970,"journal":{"name":"5th International Workshop on Laser and Fiber-Optical Networks Modeling, 2003. The experiments were performed with thin AgCl-Ag films prepared by means of successive deposition in vacuum of the AgCl layer. The films were irradiated with a focused P-polarized beam from He-Ne laser. We judge about an origin and development of SGs using patterns of small-angle scattering (or small-angle diffraction (SAD)). The hexagons arise under condition of a strong competition of the TM0- and TE0-modes with /spl beta//sub TE0//spl ne//spl beta//sub TM0/ during formation of SGs. The SAD effect plays an important role in this process.","PeriodicalId":368970,"journal":{"name":"5th International Workshop on Laser and Fiber-Optical Networks Modeling, 2003. One of the many forms of the uncertainty principle concerns angular position and angular momentum. We demonstrate this in the case of light: the more the angular position of a light beam is restricted by passing it through a radial aperture, the larger the spread in the beam's angular-momentum components. We prepare laser beams in different angular momentum states by reflecting them from a phase hologram, which determines the orbital-angular-momentum state, and passing them through a quarter-wave plate, which determines the spin state. We can measure the angular-momentum components in the beam in the form of resonances of a novel beam-rotating ring resonator. Our results are in broad agreement with the predictions of the uncertainty principle.","PeriodicalId":368970,"journal":{"name":"5th International Workshop on Laser and Fiber-Optical Networks Modeling, 2003.
