I consider two scenes captured on cell phone cameras and circulated on social media. In each context, I comment on video clips that depict activists performing the dance known as \"voguing.\" I read these performances as exercises against state performance of legibility, and I draw on historic and contemporary links between Chile and the United States to argue that these performances offer a glimpse of a politics that refuses capture by any organizing principle: a politics of refusal, evasion, and illegibility.Resumen:Este artículo considera dos episodios ocurridos durante dos revueltas recientes: Black Lives Matter en los Estados Unidos en el verano de 2020 y la revuelta chilena de octubre de 2019. Considero dos escenas que fueron filmadas en teléfonos celulares y circuladas en las redes sociales. La teoría postcolonial se refiere a la zona del no-ser o el \"sur\" como una metáfora del sufrimiento humano y, al mismo tiempo, espacio de la otredad. En este sentido, examino cómo las geografías extractivistas contienen, por un lado, discursos sobre la zona del no-ser y del sur mediante la violencia del extractivismo y de la criminalización y, por el otro, encierran múltiples posibilidades de emancipación y cambio social. A pesar del uso de la violencia justificada por parte del gobierno en las geografías extractivistas, la resignificación de las zonas del no-ser acontece desde el poder de las comunidades en sus luchas pacíficas hacia la justicia social y medioambiental.Abstract:This article examines extractivist geographies in Honduras as \"zones of nonbeing\" inhabited by the other, from where decolonizing activism emerges. Postcolonial theorists refer to the zone of nonbeing or the \"south\" as both a metaphor of human suffering and the physical space containing the other. Consequently, I explore how extractivist geographies reaffirm narratives on the zone of nonbeing and the south through the violence of extractivism and criminalization, while opening up alternatives towards emancipation and social change. Utilizando, entre otras fuentes, material epistolario inédito del archivo de la familia García Lorca y una entrevista a la actriz Laura Cepeda Golferichs, propongo una lectura de la película de Alatriste como una interpretación original de la obra de Lorca. La adaptación enfatiza el erotismo, rompe con las previas realizaciones de la obra utilizando planos recurso y desplaza el escenario a una Córdoba onírica basada en cuadros de Julio Romero de Torres. Aunque poco conocida, forma parte de la historia textual de las adaptaciones de la obra teatral de García Lorca y merece atención como tal y como una de las últimas participaciones de Buñuel en el séptimo arte.Abstract:This article traces the history of—and examines—Gustavo Alatriste's film adaptation of La casa de Bernarda Alba (1982), which he directed under the supervision of Luis Buñuel, despite protests by the heirs of Federico García Lorca. Using, among other sources, unpublished letters from the García Lorca archive and an interview with the actress Laura Cepeda Golferichs, I propose a reading of Alatriste's film as an original interpretation thereof. This erotically charged adaptation breaks with traditional productions of the play by emphasizing the exterior action through cutaway shots and displacing the setting to a dream-like Córdoba, illustrating much of the third act with imagery based on the paintings of Julio Romero de Torres. {"title":"An Arguedean Revolution on the US/Mexico Border: José María Arguedas's El zorro de arriba y el zorro de abajo and Yuri Herrera's Señales que precederán al fin del mundo","authors":"Tess Renker","doi":"10.1353/hcs.2022.0006","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1353/hcs.2022.0006","url":null,"abstract":"Abstract:This essay considers possible dialogues between José María Arguedas's El zorro de arriba y el zorro de abajo (1971) and Yuri Herrera's Señales que precederán al fin del mundo (2010), particularly as it relates to questions of migration, labor, and global capitalism. The essay argues that Señales actualizes many of the sociocultural and political questions explored by Arguedas in the 1960s, and that Herrera's protagonist revises and reinitiates the revolution proposed by the Peruvian and his foxes some fifty years before. To this end, it proposes that a comparative reading of Señales and Los zorros reveals new possibilities for interpreting Arguedas's sociocultural reach, and points to the increasing contemporaneity of his final novel. Most critically, the essay proposes the use of Arguedas as theory and method, likening his Los zorros to the later theoretical interventions of Donna Haraway, Aníbal Quijano, Mary Louise Pratt, and Valencia Sayak.Resumen:El presente trabajo interroga posibles diálogos entre El zorro de arriba y el zorro de abajo (1971) de José María Arguedas y Señales que precederán al fin del mundo (2010) de Yuri Herrera, prestando atención especial a representaciones de la migración, el trabajo y el capitalismo global. El ensayo argumenta que Señales actualiza muchas de las cuestiones socioculturales y políticas exploradas por Arguedas en los años setenta, y que la protagonista de Herrera revisa y reinicia la revolución catalizada por el peruano y sus zorros unos cincuenta años antes. Por lo tanto, sugiere que una lectura comparativa de Señales y Los zorros revela el alcance sociocultural de Arguedas y el carácter cada vez más contemporáneo de su última novela. El objetivo de este ensayo es demostrar que, inicialmente, Gómez de la Serna concibió la tertulia sabatina como espacio de sociabilidad anarquista, como un microcosmo utópico, en el que poner en práctica sus creencias e influir desde allí en la sociedad madrileña; así lo ponen de manifiesto sus primeros escritos literarios sobre el café y la tertulia: \"El café recóndito\" (1915), la Proclama (circa 1916) y Pombo (1918).Abstract:Until now, criticism as a whole has considered the gathering at the café de Pombo (1912-36) as an avant-garde literary space from which the Madrid-based writer sought to showcase and promote himself, earn fame and gain a foothold in the national and international literary field of the time.
