Some research outside the Indonesian context states that distance learning has become commonplace, but it is different from Indonesia. So that the supporting factors faced by students in carrying out remote teaching are different, especially in the Indonesian context. Since remote teaching was implemented, there have been many obstacles experienced by teachers and students in following the learning process. This study aims to analyze students' perceptions regarding the supporting factors for the implementation of remote teaching. This study uses mixed methods (qualitative and quantitative) which aims to analyze more valid and accurate data results. The focus of this research is 142 eleventh grade students who have carried out remote teaching. In data collection, researchers conducted literature studies, interviews and questionnaires. The results of this study show that there are ten factors supporting the implementation of distance learning found in the matrix literature review and confirmed by the subject. The supporting factors found can be used as guidelines for the government, teachers and students in implementing the distance learning process in the future.","PeriodicalId":36638,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of English Language and Literature Studies","volume":"194 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"79800219","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Efforts should be made to sort out traditional Chinese cultural resources and bring ancient books back to life to “tell better and more accurate stories and make China’s voice heard” (Xi, 2020, p. 365). Classical Chinese poetry has been an important window to help overseas readers to understand China. Li Bai’s poems, as representative of classical Chinese poetry, have been widely translated in the English-speaking world, but the translation and communication (TC) effects remain unclear. This study attempts to investigate the “hard” TC effects of English translations of Li Bai’s poems in America by firstly retrieving the sales rankings of 16 English translations containing the most Li Bai’s poems from 18 representative translators of Li Bai’s poems in the world-famous online bookstore Amazon and secondly analyzing customer reviews from Amazon and reader reviews from the world’s largest reading website Goodreads. Mix methods, both quantitative bibliographic survey and qualitative text analysis, were used in the research. Research shows that although sales rankings are relatively low, Li Bai’s poems have a certain number of fixed readers in America. Four English translations of Li Bai’s poems made by Ezra Pound, David Hinton, Arthur Cooper and Ha Jin have been well received by target readers with good TC effects. Among the six influencing elements of the TC effect of Li Bai’s poems—TC motivation, TC subject, TC control, TC content, TC channel and TC audience, readers pay much more attention to TC control and TC content. Therefore, to achieve a better TC effect on Chinese literature, the Chinese government and concerned institutions should scientifically formulate policies on the above-mentioned six TC elements, especially on text selection and translation strategy. This research will contribute to the communication effect of translated Chinese literature and serve as a reference for the TC undertakings of literature from other non-English speaking countries, thus promoting equal cultural communication among countries.","PeriodicalId":36638,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of English Language and Literature Studies","volume":"102 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"79068966","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This is an ideology of fair and just treatment of the different cultures of the East and the West, externally opposing drastic cultural changes but internally pursuing the continuity of ancient and modern culture and the integration of Eastern and Western cultures. Due to its fierce criticism of “old literature” in the New Culture Movement, Wu Mi’s literary philosophy was considered old-fashioned and anachronistic at the beginning of the 20th century. On the contrary, Wu Mi had no bias toward the literature of the past and present, East and West, which is a significant step toward understanding in culture and its development, during turbulent and chaotic times.","PeriodicalId":36638,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of English Language and Literature Studies","volume":"71 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"82666859","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this novel, the titular character, Matilda, is described as a five-year-old girl Matilda with extraordinary ability, despite her unfavorable family. She was fortunate to meet a dedicated teacher, Miss Honey, who recognized her talents. The present study aimed at analyzing Roald Dahl’s novel entitled Matilda from feminist perspectives. This study focused on analyzing feminism represented in the novel’s intrinsic elements. The study employed close reading enriched with Rosemary Tong's elaboration on feminist perspectives. The analysis revealed that feminist ideologies are represented through the novel’s theme, setting, and characterizations of the major characters. The novel's theme represents feminist ideologies by presenting women against, abused, or embraced feminist ideologies. The socio-cultural setting of the novel further emphasized the oppression of women who wanted to be independent. The depiction of feminism was strongly presented in the characterizations of Matilda and Miss Honey, who cooperated in fighting against their families' patriarchal treatment. These results imply that the novel is educative for children and young women to raise awareness about gender equality.","PeriodicalId":36638,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of English Language and Literature Studies","volume":"2 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"89588605","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
