{"title":"Relationships Among Reading Interest, Reading Self-Efficacy, And Reading Competency In The Junior High School","authors":"Ni Putu Udianingrum Setiawan","doi":"10.23887/ijll.v6i1.28282","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.23887/ijll.v6i1.28282","url":null,"abstract":"The objective of this study was to describe and relate the students’ reading interest, reading self-efficacy to the students reading competency in the Junior High School in Singaraja. This study applied quantitative research. There were 94 students as samples by using cluster quota sampling. The data were collected through a reading interest scale, a reading self-efficacy scale, and an objective reading competency test. The obtained data were analyzed descriptively and inferentially. The descriptive analysis consisted of central tendency measures and dispersion. While inferential analysis, the data were analyzed using pair-wise correlation and multiple correlation technique. The findings show that: 1) the students’ reading interest, reading self-efficacy, and reading competency on high-order-items proven to be at the moderate levels; 2) the relations pair-wisely between the students’ reading interest and reading self-efficacy, students’ reading interest and reading competency, the students’ reading self-efficacy and reading competency on high-order-items are positively and significantly correlated; and 3) the simultaneous relationships of the reading interest and reading self-efficacy to the students’ reading competency is proven to be significant. In order to develop high students’ reading interest, reading self-efficacy, and reading competency, the school and EFL teachers should provide literacy programs in reading. Previous researches show that literacy-rich environments tend to be effective ways to support the development of literacy in reading by sharing book readings. This qualitative descriptive research was aimed at identify types of students’ disruptive behavior that found at SD Lab Undiksha Singaraja especially in fifth grade, identify types of effective commands are given by an English teacher and analyze how the effective commands are given to students with disruptive behavior. This study was a case study research. The data were collected through observation, questionnaire, and interview. The result of this study showed that students ‘disruptive behavior at SD Lab Undiksha Singaraja classified as The Immature category such as talking with their friend, paying no attention to the teacher and lesson, walking around the class, and making a noise. To overcome students’ disruptive behavior, the teacher was used several types of commands. There were five types of Effective command such as Interrogation command, Don’t command, Indirect command, Regular command and Other command. Being polite is complicated but sometimes interesting thing in any language. This study focused on analyses the types of politeness strategy expressed by the speakers and analyze what factors were influenced the chosen of politeness strategy implemented by the speakers. However the population in this study is all people in who come in this presidential debate and the sample are Hillary Clinton, Donald Trump, and the moderator. The data collection method used was documentation method which applied to get the data. The instrument used was the researcher by hearing, observing, and taking a note during the presidential debate. Then, the data analysis method was descriptive qualitative method by analyzing the transcript of debate. It can be concluded that there were four types of politeness strategy found: bald-on-record strategy, positive politeness strategy, negative politeness strategy, and off-record strategy. The result of study found that there were two factors applied in the debate, which are payoff factors and sociological factors. The research problems were focused on the speech acts’ social functions, linguistic features, and language elements. The research was designed in a qualitative approach. Data were analysed descriptively by classifying the speech acts’ social functions, linguistic features, and language elements. The research findings were, firstly, the speech acts’ social functions were stating, describing, explaining, ordering, asking, advising, praying, requesting, complimenting, thanking, boasting, congratulating, apologizing, welcoming, condoling, refusing, offering, guaranteeing, and promising acts. Secondly, the speech acts’ linguistic features designed were imperative, interrogative, and declarative sentences. The result of this study revealed that students’ disruptive behavior that appeared during the teaching and learning process could be categorized as The Immature, The Well to Do, The Mountain Climber and The Game Player, furthermore. In overcoming those disruptive behaviors the teacher used several types of commands such as Others Commands, Don’t Commands, Regular Commands, Question Commands, Indirect Commands, Interrogations Commands, Stop Command, and Negative Commands. Rowling’s Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone has presented readers with different unique teachers. Even though Rowling’s series disclose Professor Snape as a hero, the first novel depicted him as an insufferable character set to thwart the main characters’ adventure. This study aimed to provide more objective portrayals of Professor Snape through interactive qualitative data analysis. The subject of the study is J. K. Rowling’s Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. Meanwhile, the characterizations of Professor Snape become the object of the study. As the main instrument of data collection, the researcher conducted close reading. The analysis consisted of a concurrent process of data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing, which are also synchronized with the data collected at the beginning of the research. This study reveals that Professor Snape was depicted as knowledgeable, curious, observant, hardworking, loner, partial, loyal, responsible, and authoritative. These results show that Professor Snape has good characters. However, they were overshadowed by his brooding appearance. Informants in this study are people who can perform this dance and the choreographer. This study used a descriptive qualitative approach. This study aims to identify the lexicon in Mahawidya Legong Dance. The data obtained through interviews with choreographers and dancers as informants in this study. Thirty-three (33) lexicon are found in the movemnet of Legong Mahawidya Dance. Not all lexicons in the movement have cultural meaning. Preserving Balinese culture, especially in language and art, is the responsibility of the Balinese people. This study was designed in a descriptive qualitative study. The focus of this study was to find out the lexicons and the cultural meaning of costumes used by the dancers of Baris Demang Demung dance. This study applied observation and interview methods to collect the data and totally supported with the three selected informants. The obtained data were analyzed qualitatively and descriptively. The result of this study showed that t here were 27 lexicons in the dance costumes which were divided into three types namely costumes in Baris Demang Demung (8 lexicons), costumes in Prebangsa/King (14 lexicons), and costumes in Potet (10 lexicons). However, 5 of the same lexicons are found in Prebangsa/King and Potet costumes. His movies have lasting impact. Based on the conceptual metaphor theory of cognitive linguistics, this study analyzes the multi-modal metaphors in his animated movies to explore his cognitive needs behind his creation and find out how these metaphors are generated. This paper uses the method of qualitative analysis and comprehensively analyzes the images, aiming to answer two questions: 1) What are the multi-modal metaphors in his animated movies? 2) What cognitive needs and creative motivations do these multi-modal metaphors reflect in his movies? \u0000 \u0000In this paper, five of Miyazaki’s animated movies are employed to analyze the images in it. The secondary data was collected from the website of movies. The results of the study showed that there is a large number of non-textual metaphors in his movies, such as: Pig, Totoro, Oil house, Chihiro, Animals, Fire, Bridge, Tain, and so on. These multimodal metaphors reflect the cognitive needs and psychological motivations behind his creations. Through the analysis of Hayao Miyazaki himself, basic color, emotions, space, daily habits, national culture and other metaphorical cognition in his movies, we have a full understanding of metaphorical cognition, language and culture, national psychology and thinking habits in the process of his creation. The ideology of feminism concerns the life struggles of women to encounter the patriarchal culture and reach gender equality. This study is aimed to analyze and compare the characterizations of Snow White based on feminists' perspective. The subject of this research is Snow White as the main character in two different versions. The study employed textual analysis and revealed that Snow White with positive femininity, such as beautiful, diligent, and expressive, and negative femininity, such as dependent. The data analysis will be presented in three parts, including the similarities, the differences, and the comparison of Snow White's characterizations based on feminists' perspectives. The research will follow the qualitative analysis consisting of data collection, data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. However, in the story by Regis Maine, Snow White is described as more feminist than Vera Southgate's character.
