With regard to the titular see of Hebron, the teutonic Knights found themselves in the crosshairs of title investigations, but ultimately benefited from their interaction with the bishop who helped supply them with indulgences. in all cases, the documentation suggests recurrent conflicts, however, it also reveals a pronounced ability to compromise for the benefit of parishioners and pilgrims alike.","PeriodicalId":36536,"journal":{"name":"Ordines Militares","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-10-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45257006","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These relations can be subdivided as follows. Firstly, the Templars acted as arbitrators, along with the Hospitallers and other clergy nominated by the pope, in disputes between the crown and nobles on one hand and the secular Latin Church on the other. Secondly, the Templars had relations with the secular Latin clergy of Cyprus. Thirdly, they had relations with the regular Latin clergy, including the other Military Orders. Finally, some of the testimony submitted by witnesses at the Trial of the Templars on Cyprus in 1310 sheds light on relations between the Templars, other regular clergy and the secular Latin clergy in the years before 1307 when the Templars were arrested. The sources used in preparing this paper are mostly published papal correspondence relating to Cyprus and the published account of the Trial of the Templars on Cyprus. Secondary works have also been used for comparisons with other parts of Europe.","PeriodicalId":36536,"journal":{"name":"Ordines Militares","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-10-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47721633","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the French province they were always convened in Paris, but in some other provinces meetings took place in various convents. Those who attended were mostly heads of convents, and it seems that those present usually totalled some forty to fifty brothers: in many provinces the majority were sergeants. Provincial masters normally presided, but occasionally the grand master or visitor had charge. Heads of convents were expected to pay their responsions at the chapter and present a statement about the condition of their houses. There seems, however, to have been no general review of appointments. Moreover, the chapter also acted as a chapter of faults. Yet any current business could also be raised at a meeting, although little is known about the process of decision-making. Provincial chapters appear to have lasted for only a few days, whereas at other Times in the year provincial masters tended to seek counsel from smaller groups of commanders.","PeriodicalId":36536,"journal":{"name":"Ordines Militares","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-12-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48121276","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Scholars who study the relationship between the Order of Saint John and the monarchy usually ask these questions about the status of the Hospitaller priors among the elites in their respective realms. This paper aims to look into this matter in the Kingdom of Navarre in the Late Middle Ages. This issue became a bone of contention between the prior of Canons regular of Roncesvalles on the one hand and the prior of Saint John on the other as early as the sixteenth century. This feud and the arguments that both sides gave for and against their claim have been used as a starting point for examining the courtly position of Hospitaller priors during the preceding two hundred years. The present study is based on analysing records of royal ceremonies and acts that provide valuable information about ritual communication in public space, where precedence reflected not only the kingdom’s symbolic, institutional order, but also set the stage for political action.","PeriodicalId":36536,"journal":{"name":"Ordines Militares","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-12-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45561889","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
