We also investigated the influence of BMI on meniscal tears with regard to age. Methods: We investigated 104 patients who had surgery for meniscal injuries and 111 patients who had knee magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) with no prior history of meniscal surgery. The relationship between BMI and meniscal injuries which required meniscal surgery was evaluated by independent samples T-test. A cutoff BMI value has been tried to find out by receiver operating characteristics (ROC). The odds ratio has been calculated with regard to this cutoff value. Patients were classified into three age groups ≤30, 31–50 and ≥51 years old. Chi-square was used to determine whether age affected the BMI relationship with meniscal injuries which required surgery. Results: BMI values were significantly higher in surgical patients compared to controls (p = 0.005). To compare surgical and non-surgical patients, ROC analysis was used and area under curve (AUC) value was calculated as 0.605. A BMI value of 27.90 had the highest specificity (92.0%) and sensitivity (40.4%), and the odds ratio calculated by Pearson chi-square was 3,08 for this BMI value. The most significant difference in BMI between surgical and non-surgical patients was observed in the 31–50 age group (p = 0.007). There was no significant difference in BMI between surgical and non-surgical patients in the <30 age group (p=0,404). Conclusion: Higher BMI increases the risk of meniscal tears requiring surgery, especially in the 31–50 age groups. Patients might benefit from weight regulation since BMI is thought to be an important modifiable risk factor for meniscal tears.","PeriodicalId":363370,"journal":{"name":"Eastern Journal of Medical Sciences","volume":"49 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-03-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124452160","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Objectives: The phenotypic screening of metallo beta-lactamases (MBL) in strains of Pseudomonas aeruginosa resistant to imipenem. Material and Methods: The study was carried out in the department of Microbiology, in a medical hospital, Bareilly, over a period 18 months from January 2013 to June 2014. A total of 103 Pseudomonas aeruginosa isolated from sputum, broncho alveolar lavage (BAL), urine, pus and blood from critically ill patients admitted in the intensive care unit of a tertiary care centre. Strain of P. aeruginosa resistant to imipenem, were tested for metallo beta-lactamase production by phenotypic methods. Result: Out of 103 Pseudomonas aeruginosa, 48 strains were found imipenem resistant, of which 43(89.6%) were MBL positive by imipenem -EDTA combined disc test and the rest 35(72.9%) were by modified Hodge test. Conclusion: Imipenem – EDTA combined disc test found to be the best phenotypic method for detection of MBL. The appearance of the MBL and their spread among bacterial pathogens is a matter of concern with regard to the future of antimicrobial therapy. Both the methods are simple and one of these phenotypic methods can be easily incorporated in routine lab procedures to detect MBL.","PeriodicalId":363370,"journal":{"name":"Eastern Journal of Medical Sciences","volume":"30 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128266345","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Pathological findings in endoscopy are an important factor in the treatment of these patients. Objective: To investigate the histopathological differences related to hiatal hernia in dyspeptic patients. Material and Methods: A retrospective study was conducted of 116 patients with dyspeptic complaints. The patients were divided into two groups according to the presence of hiatal hernia. Biochemical tests and endoscopic biopsy results of these groups were compared. Results: The mean age of our study population was 52.4 years where, 50% were male and 50% were female. Hiatal hernia was found in 44.8% of the patients and 22.4% of the patients had intestinal metaplasia. The rate of intestinal metaplasia was found to be statistically lower in the hiatal hernia group (p=0.011). Conclusion: Intestinal metaplasia is less frequently found in patients with hiatal hernias in our study; it may be attributed to the fact that these patients had earlier dyspeptic complaints and therefore, earlier medical treatment and earlier initiation of a protective gastric diet.","PeriodicalId":363370,"journal":{"name":"Eastern Journal of Medical Sciences","volume":"116 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-09-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114725182","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Materials and methods: Mandibular first molars were used for inlay restorations in a typodont model. Three groups (n=12 each) of inlays were fabricated by Computer Aided Design/ Computer Aided Manufacturing (CAD/CAM) technology using intraoral and extraoral scanning devices, and conventional heat-press method. Replica technique was used to assess the discrepancies. Internal and marginal gaps were measured at 4 points on each side with stereomicroscope at 200x magnification. One-way variance analysis test (ANOVA) and paired-samples t-test were used for analyzing the results. Results: The fit values were statistically significantly influenced by the production method in total discrepancy comparisons (p= .000). Intraoral scanner group demonstrated the lowest marginal and internal gap values whereas conventional heat-press group showed the highest results. Statistically significant differences were found for fit values with respect to the groups (p<.001). Conclusion: Within the limitations of the study, restorations fabricated via complete digital workflow demonstrated better marginal and internal accuracy than silicone impressions with conventional heat-press technique.","PeriodicalId":363370,"journal":{"name":"Eastern Journal of Medical Sciences","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-09-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131678187","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
