Die kritische Haltung des Landes gegenüber Europa und der Wunsch nach einer starken Führungspersönlichkeit spiegeln einen allgemeinen Trend der konservativen und autoritären Nostalgie in ganz Europa wider. Ethnonationalismus, antiliberaler Katholizismus, Ressentiments gegen Politiker:innen und Antikapitalismus prägen die Entscheidungen vieler Wähler:innen. Trotz aller Bedenken bleibt Italien eine parlamentarische Demokratie mit stabilen Institutionen, und Melonis Sieg ist eine Fortsetzung der langjährigen Verschiebung innerhalb der Mitte-Rechts-Koalition, kein historischer Bruch oder eine konservativ-nationalistische Neupositionierung.","PeriodicalId":36222,"journal":{"name":"Leviathan (Germany)","volume":"112 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"79307324","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Ausgehend von einem Verständnis des Sozialen, das stets politisch, relational, affektiv und praxeologisch ist, wird in diesem Beitrag die Frage verhandelt, wie die empirische Sozialforschung gerade über eine Diskussion mit rechten Akteuren und mithilfe der politischen Differenz als methodischem Instrument diskursive Grenzen besser erkennen und folglich auch ihre Kritik präzisieren kann. Dazu wird ein zweiphasiges Interview vorgeschlagen, dass Interviewten zuerst mit Empathie und dann mit Konfrontation begegnet. Veranschaulicht werden die Techniken und ihre Effekte anhand von Gruppendiskussionen, die im Rahmen einer Studie zum islamfeindlichen Diskurs unter Anhänger*innen rechter Gruppierungen in Deutschland geführt wurden. Politische Differenz, so wird gezeigt, muss keine Hürde, sondern kann ein Potenzial für kritische Sozialforschung sein.","PeriodicalId":36222,"journal":{"name":"Leviathan (Germany)","volume":"31 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"85634638","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Die Sozialwissenschaften prägten vor diesem Hintergrund ein Verständnis moderner Gesellschaften, dem zufolge die politische Entwicklung der Moderne auf den Nationalstaat konvergiert, wohingegen die noch bestehenden Imperien Relikte einer im Untergang befindlichen Epoche seien. Im Anschluss an die jüngere sozial- und geschichtswissenschaftliche Forschung nimmt dieser Aufsatz eine alternative Perspektive ein, die sich für das dynamische Zusammenspiel beider Ordnungsmodelle interessiert. Am Beispiel des deutschen Kaiserreichs und seiner Kolonien werden paradigmatische Verflechtungsmodi von Imperium und Nation herausgearbeitet, um auf dieser Grundlage eine neuartige Typologie zu entwickeln.","PeriodicalId":36222,"journal":{"name":"Leviathan (Germany)","volume":"14 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"90551412","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Die Gründe dafür waren allerdings äußerst verschieden. In Russland nahm der Nationalstolz in dem Maße zu, wie sich das Land nach 2000 wirtschaftlich und politisch erholte und wie Putin mit seinen Gebietsannexionen erfolgreich war. In der Ukraine erhöhte sich das Nationalbewusstsein in Reaktion auf die Aggressionen Russlands und verband sich nicht nur mit antirussischen Einstellungen, sondern auch mit einer stärkeren Öffnung gegenüber demokratischen und europäischen Werten. Die religiöse Identität trug in beiden Ländern zwar ebenfalls zur Stärkung des Nationalbewusstseins bei. Das Nationalbewusstsein scheint sich in der Ukraine aber stärker aus säkularen als aus religiösen Quellen zu speisen, wobei hier offenbar der Sprache die Rolle des Identitätsmarkers zukommt. In Russland ist eine Differenzierung von Nationalstolz und religiöser Identifikation hingegen nicht zu erkennen.","PeriodicalId":36222,"journal":{"name":"Leviathan (Germany)","volume":"70 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135401532","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

I argue that Bellows's effort to reconcile the best features of Unitarianism and Calvinism corresponds to Melville's mercurial literary renderings of liberal and orthodox doctrine. I likewise explore the impact that the New York Christian Inquirer—for which Bellows was lead editor from 1846 to 1850, and a frequent contributor thereafter—had in encouraging Unitarianism to evolve from a sect that rejected the tenets of Calvinism into one that welcomed the best features of pietism. This study therefore has pertinence for scholars of Herman Melville and for students of American church history.","PeriodicalId":36222,"journal":{"name":"Leviathan (Germany)","volume":"71 1","pages":"72 - 80"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"85894351","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Following a review of Hawthorne's extended influence on Melville's fiction and poetry, this article explores the nature of that influence by means of an analysis of Melville's markings in Hawthorne's fiction based on the metaphor of the \"germinous seeds\" that Melville felt implanted by his reading of Hawthorne, as expressed in his well-known review of Mosses from an Old Manse. Resources newly added and in development at Melville's Marginalia Online facilitate study of his reading, as illustrated in the present essay by bar plots and term frequencies. In addition to examining the significance of selected evidence in his marking of fiction he read after Mosses, the analysis focuses on a single frequency in Melville's marginalia: the binary of head and heart long familiar to critics from the review and correspondence, but originally prompted by Melville's exuberant reading of Mosses. Melville's conception of the trope informed the metaphysical character of his letters to Hawthorne and, briefly, affirmed his fraternal and spiritual bond with the older writer.","PeriodicalId":36222,"journal":{"name":"Leviathan (Germany)","volume":"24 1","pages":"49 - 7"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"89261442","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

While connections between that poem and Melville's have been recognized, they are based chiefly on similarities of theme, missing some points in the poetry. A careful reading of the two works shows how Melville absorbed language and characters from Tennyson, and reshaped them to his own purpose. Tennyson's vision of a bountiful future lying before his princess is inverted by Melville, with both similar and contrasting language, to form his character's vision of despair. Melville's character may have been suggested by the maiden aunt who is a key figure in Tennyson's poem; I propose that this maiden aunt caught Melville's attention, and helped to inspire the monologue he created for another maiden in \"After the Pleasure Party.\"","PeriodicalId":36222,"journal":{"name":"Leviathan (Germany)","volume":"11 1","pages":"87 - 91"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"84275443","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
