In a second step, we refer to the precursors (1950s-1960s) and the pioneers (1980s and 1990s) of this French-language translation studies: what names emerge from this recent period and how have they advanced the reflection? Then we turn our attention to the problem of the translation of TS into French and translation studies into English. Finally, in order to define the socio-institutional dimension of the discipline, we study the parameters and factors that have favored and still favor this French-speaking translation studies, such as associations, training places and programs, recruitment bodies, as well as certain channels of dissemination (doctoral schools, research teams, journals, collections). Our final question focuses on the direct and indirect influences of French-speaking researchers in the humanities and social sciences on TS and translation studies. In conclusion, we focus on the notion of a “French-speaking translation area” and consider its relevance for a historiography in the making.","PeriodicalId":36042,"journal":{"name":"Miedzy Oryginalem a Przekladem","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48728117","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

His early research dates back to the same time as Fedorov’s, who represents what might be called the Russian school of translation. This paper seeks to analyse Georges Mounin’s work, which spans 40 years, until his death in 1993. His legacy is not just bibliographical, it is also that of a teacher with remarkable communication skills who trained disciples, and that of a talent scout who discovered the young Ladmiral and Meschonnic in the 1970s. Most importantly however, Georges Mounin has the immense merit of having introduced translation studies into French universities and within the field of linguistics, an achievement which later enabled him to take the sociolinguistic turn, notably with the issue of worldview and language universals. This paper is also largely about the man, seen through his teaching career, his political commitment, his links with other authors, not to forget his work as a translator. Georges Mounin was indeed first of all a field man, who translated Dante, Petrarch, Machiavelli or Pasternak.","PeriodicalId":36042,"journal":{"name":"Miedzy Oryginalem a Przekladem","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66105393","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The subject of the analysis is the work of Jan Bukowski (1873-1943), a leading artist of Young Poland, a pioneer of Polish applied art and an outstanding creator of book graphics. He was revered for his ability to reach the “inner content” of the text resulting from the author’s intention and express it with an equivalent plastic form. The article discusses the theoretical aspects of the word-image relationship and explains the concept of intersemiotic translation. On the basis of this concept, a model is proposed to analyze selected graphic works by Jan Bukowski as intersemiotic translations. The analytical part of the article presents four different types of equivalence that Jan Bukowski used when making his intersemiotic translations, which were designs for the covers of literary works.","PeriodicalId":36042,"journal":{"name":"Miedzy Oryginalem a Przekladem","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-04-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48764410","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The occurrence of such special elements as realia, proper names, terms in literary texts, and especially in poetic works, has also been pointed out. Attention was drawn to poems devoted to specialised issues, as in the case of Lomonosov’s ode on the benefit of glass. The conclusions to be drawn from this for translation concern first and foremost the endeavour to reproduce in translation the function performed by the ‘chains and grids’ of the aforementioned elements with a particular focus on the informative function. Such a view of text and translation allows the latter to be considered in the context of specialised translation, and by reversing this thought one can treat the translation of specialised texts as a creative work.","PeriodicalId":36042,"journal":{"name":"Miedzy Oryginalem a Przekladem","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-04-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47440995","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In addition, translation is understood very broadly, often becoming one of the tools for creativity. This overview shows the different roles of translation in Canada, as well as the different roles of female translators, who are also authors and, in the case of feminist translation and “translation in the feminine”, influence the perception of the translation process itself. Among the various forms of knowledge circulation in this field, in addition to conferences, regular meetings and academic publications, they point to encyclopaedias, anthologies and other collections of foundational texts, as well as textbooks. The present study is based on the reading lists drawn from the syllabuses of translation studies courses featuring in the curricula of various modern languages programmes offered by Polish universities in 2016-2019. It aims to identify the ‘Polish canon’ of translation studies knowledge emerging from the recent pedagogical practice. The analysis of the lists shows a fragmentation of recommended readings, leading to the conclusion that such a canon does not actually exist, and signals a dominance of texts written in English. Another striking finding is a very low proportion of translations, and especially the absence of foreign ‘classics’ of translation studies in Polish.","PeriodicalId":36042,"journal":{"name":"Miedzy Oryginalem a Przekladem","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-04-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66105095","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Busza, also esteemed as a poet and scholar studying the writings of Joseph Conrad, presented his views on translation theory in his essay published in Polish in 1983. Although the essay discusses the issue of semantic refraction in poetry translation, Busza’s interpretation of the term is different from the one proposed year earlier (1982) by André Lefevere. Muslims and people who know Arabic emphasize the extraordinary beauty of this text, written in rhymed and rhythmic prose. 55 sura of the Koran, Ar-Raḥmān (The Merciful) is widely regarded, both in Muslim and Orientalist circles, as one of the most beautiful, if not the most beautiful, sura of the Koran from the artistic point of view. This is mainly due to the presence of a kind of “refrain” in this sura, which, of course, also has a semantic role in the context of the content of this fragment of the holy book of Muslims. The subject of the article is, first of all, a comparative analysis of the translation of this sura, and first of all of the refrain, in selected translations of the Koran into Polish, German, French and Russian. The analysis focuses not on the way of presenting the content, but on whether the authors of the translations tried to reflect the undoubted beauty of the sound of the Koranic text, which is supposed to delight not only with its content, but also its form, and translators usually have huge problems with this. The conclusions resulting from this analysis have a broader meaning, because analogous problems also arise in the case of ancient Arabic poetry and some other literary genres, primarily maqāma.","PeriodicalId":36042,"journal":{"name":"Miedzy Oryginalem a Przekladem","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-04-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48018824","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
