However, these finite reserves are concentrated in certain region of the world and would soon get exhausted. In view of the above problems, the search for alternative fuel has become extensively important. Thus the use of non edible vegetable oil comes into focus. These alternative fuels should be renewable and eco-friendly. The main advantages of vegetable oils as fuel are ready availability, renewability, lower sulphur and aromatic content, and biodegradability.","PeriodicalId":360345,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE Conference on Clean Energy and Technology (CET)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-06-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132364917","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The indiscriminate extraction and consumption of Fossil fuels have led to a reduction in petroleum. Due to the concern on the availability of recoverable fossil fuel reserves and environmental problems caused by the use of those fossil fuels, considerable attention has been given to biodiesel production. The methyl esters of vegetable oils, known as biodiesel becoming increasing popular, because of its potential as a green alternative fuel for diesel fuel. It has many advantages over conventional diesel fuels. These include biodegradable, non toxic, nil sulfur content, reduced aromatics. It can either be directly used in engine or can be blended with conventional diesel, and requires no engine modification. There are various methods available for the production of biodiesel such as micro emulsification, dilution, pyrolysis, transesterification and esterification, among which transesterification is the best process. Biodiesel is produced by transesterifying the parent oil or fat with an alcohol, usually methanol, in presence of a catalyst usually strong base such as NaOH or KOH or, preferably an increasingly more commonly alkoxide. The transesterification reaction variable that affect yield and purity of the product include molar ratio of alcohol to vegetable oil, type of catalyst, molar ratio of catalyst to oil, temperature and degree of refinement of vegetable oil. In this paper various vegetable oils transesterification was studied with the purpose of achieving the best conditions for biodiesel production.","PeriodicalId":360345,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE Conference on Clean Energy and Technology (CET)","volume":"109 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-06-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128019820","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Mostly, its generation in developing countries is from hydro sources, oil and gas as well as firewood/charcoal. As a maritime and an oil and gas economy, Nigeria generates its energy from hydro, oil and gas. Concerns about depletion, environment and effectiveness of distributing produced energy are shifting concerns to other natural sources especially solar energy. The paper evaluates the consumption pattern and attitude of Nigerians towards solar energy utilization. The study area, Ibadan, was a largest African City up till the 1960s and has a population of about 750,000 presently. Two (2) of its five (5) Local Government Areas of administration are studied. Using a questionnaire, a total of 240 households were sampled with respect to (i) the status of electricity supply in the area presently; (ii) the level of satisfaction with supply, (iii) the alternatives in use (iv) the level of solar energy awareness and adoption (iv) the existing solar powered facilities, and; (iv) the challenges towards adopting the more sustainable solar option. The findings reveal that: about 60% of the residents in the region receive less than 4hrs of electricity energy supply daily from the regulatory Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN) in the country, this is absurd to the residents, fuelwood consumption is the main alternative, the level of solar energy awareness is high, and, its utilization is only limited to traffic lights on 3 main roads, ATM machines and few water pumps in 2 new residential estates. The challenges towards enhanced adoption of the source of energy and the implication for development are discussed.","PeriodicalId":360345,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE Conference on Clean Energy and Technology (CET)","volume":"10 3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-06-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123099370","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Exergy losses, exergy efficiency, second law efficiency and irreversibility of the system components as well as of the whole system are measured. In the vapor compression system, R134a, R290 and R600a are considered as refrigerants. Exergy parameters in the compressor, evaporator, condenser and expansion devices are calculated and analyzed. Exergy losses depend on evaporator temperatures, condensing temperature, refrigerants and ambient temperature. Most of the exergy losses occur in the condenser. Expansion device has the lowest losses. Exergy parameters are compared for different operating temperature. It is found that hydrocarbons (R600a) have 50% higher exergy efficiency than R134a. Mixture of hydrocarbons also shows the best performance based on the exergy analysis.","PeriodicalId":360345,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE Conference on Clean Energy and Technology (CET)","volume":"18 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-06-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122042183","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The suitability of the models for PV module temperature prediction was examined in order to assess the anticipated behavior of module temperature increase with respect to ambient temperature and solar radiation. A total of 16 models has been selected and investigated by employing the monthly mean daily meteorological data of Kuching, Sarawak. It is revealed that most models exposed analogous tendency of module temperature and solar radiation intensity. However, their magnitude was quite dissimilar under constant solar radiation and ambient temperature conditions. This variation may be due to the use of different variables, climatic conditions, configuration of PV modules and approach used by various researchers.","PeriodicalId":360345,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE Conference on Clean Energy and Technology (CET)","volume":"704 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-06-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131489140","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

There is a dilemma between the continued reliance on fossil fuel for energy and the pressing need to address the problem of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from combustion. A potential technology that allows for the consumption of fossil fuel with a minimized emission rate is Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS). Malaysia is a fast developing economy with a historical trend of high reliance on fossil fuel for its energy needs. Therefore, there is compelling motivation to consider CCS for the country's GHG emission reduction initiative. This paper reviews the potential for carbon capture and storage (CCS) as a part of the climate change mitigation strategy for the Malaysian electricity sector using a technology assessment framework. The suitability and practicality of the technology was reviewed from a broad perspective with a consideration of Malaysia specific conditions. There had been a number of prior assessments on the suitability of CCS as a mitigation technology. Nonetheless, most of these assessments are typically more inclined towards the review from an economic viewpoint and are centered towards the case of developed economies. This study aims to fulfill this gap of knowledge and assess the technology from a broad sense in the Malaysia settings. It is apparent to this assessment that CCS has the potential to play an important role in Malaysia's climate change mitigation strategy. However, this study also identified key criteria that would need to be in place for CCS to be an effective climate change mitigation technology for the case of Malaysia.","PeriodicalId":360345,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE Conference on Clean Energy and Technology (CET)","volume":"1102 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-06-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115919051","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The landfill gas (LFG) thus released is a potential resource that can be converted to renewable energy. LFG is made up majorly of methane and carbon dioxide and produced by anaerobic biodegradation processes of municipal solid waste in landfills. This study estimates the amount of this methane emitted from landfills and its potential economic benefits. Using the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) methodology, in 2002, methane emission of 251,000 tonnes per year was estimated for Peninsular Malaysia based on 16,988 tonnes per day of municipal solid waste generated. This can generate 1.5 billion kWh of electricity per year worth over RM 450 million (US$141 million). In addition, this leads to carbon dioxide reduction of 5,271,000 tonnes per year equivalent to carbon credit of RM 222 million (US$69 million). Therefore, the exploration of this resource, besides the economic benefits helps in reducing the dependence on depleting fossil fuel and hence mitigating global warming.","PeriodicalId":360345,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE Conference on Clean Energy and Technology (CET)","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-06-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127767164","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
