It is high corrosive for engine. Among various methods for H2S removal, the adsorption by activated carbon is known as an efficient process for low concentration H2S removal. Moreover, activated carbon is not only inexpensive but also produces from agricultural waste in Thailand. The objective of this work is for upgrading the commercial-grade activated carbon by sodium hydroxide (NaOH) impregnation and the combination of steam activation and NaOH impregnation. The aim of upgrading is to improve the performance of H2S removal from fuel gases. The commercial and NaOH-impregnated activated carbons were tested by the temperature program adsorption of H2S at 30 °C and 550 °C. The results showed that the adsorption capacities of the NaOH-impregnated activated carbons are significantly higher than the commercial activated carbon (in the range of 2–21 times higher depending on the temperature of adsorption). At high temperature of adsorption, the adsorption capacity of the NaOH-impregnated activated carbon was 30.10 mg of H2S per gram of activated carbon. It can be concluded that the upgraded activated carbons is applicable for hot fuel gas purification. The concentration of H2S comes out at the outlet gas after treatment by the upgraded materials was almost 0 ppmv, which is safe for utilizing in fuel cell system and power engine.","PeriodicalId":360345,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE Conference on Clean Energy and Technology (CET)","volume":"73 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-06-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127120665","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The proposed inverter has conventional full-bridge configuration and one bidirectional switch. The control technique is digitally generated based on multicarrier PWM in Altera DE2 board, which has many features that allow implementation of the system design through Cyclone II FPGA device. A sinusoidal reference signal and two triangular carrier signals in phase and of the same frequency but different offset voltages were used to generate the PWM signals for the inverter switches. Besides Altera Quartus II software, Matlab/Simulink software was used to simulate and verify the proposed circuit before it was implemented in a prototype hardware. Simulation and experiment results closely agreed.","PeriodicalId":360345,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE Conference on Clean Energy and Technology (CET)","volume":"107 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-06-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127327636","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To do so, construction waste management needs to be considered in the early stages of building components design and preparation. Industrial, Flexible and Demountable building system (IFD) is attempting to create more adaptable buildings while managing its end-of-life more efficiently and focusing on the long term performance of structure and materials. It will assist the main concept of sustainability by reducing material and energy consumption as well as environmental pollution. This research focuses on the development of IFD system for residential terrace house layout. Proposing a procedure to evaluate the conceptual prototype is the key concern. The procedure contains assessment according to IFD criteria and structural characteristics. ETABS software was applied for analyzing the stability and load bearing capacity of the structure. The assessments have testified to the flexibility and strength of the designed layout. Findings from this study have implications for construction industry who concern environmental sustainability as well.","PeriodicalId":360345,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE Conference on Clean Energy and Technology (CET)","volume":"24 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-06-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127518729","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The award partly serves to highlight to the world the urgency and importance of the global warming issue to humanity. However, questions still remain on the actual public awareness level on global warming and the available technology for its mitigation. This study focused on a Malaysian perspective on these issues. The objectives were achieved with specifically developed questionnaires for gauging the awareness and support level of the respondents. Over a thousand surveys were distributed to the general public via a mix of online and printout survey forms. The responses to the survey were encouraging. Majority of the respondents have heard of or are aware about the global warming issue. Yet, the responses show that there is still a lack of understanding on the climate change drivers. CCS technology is also a rather new mitigation technology and many are still not clear about the details on the role of the technology. It was also noted that there is much support from the respondents with regard to the need for more effort to mitigate climate change, yet there is still some reluctance to contribute in monetary forms to the additional cost required for mitigation. This survey results clearly show that there is still a need to further disseminate information and knowledge on global warming to the general public. In order to minimize confusion and to gain support, details and facts with regards to mitigation technologies should also be part of a wider public education or outreach initiative.","PeriodicalId":360345,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE Conference on Clean Energy and Technology (CET)","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-06-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115200345","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Cassava wastewater with a COD value of 32,000 mg/L subjected to pretreatment with (i) sonication and (ii) α-amylase (enzyme) was used as a substrate. Experiments were conducted in a double chamber microbial fuel cell separated by a Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) to study the amount of electricity produced. Methylene blue was used as electron mediator while the phosphate buffer saline solution acted as electrolyte. The value of voltage (mV) and current (mA) were measured every 30 minutes during the first 24 hours and hourly measurements were performed afterwards for a total of 10 days. The power outputs were calculated based on the obtained measurements. The average maximum power output was obtained from cassava wastewater subjected to pretreatment with α-amylase and was 9861 mW as compared to untreated with 7159 mW. Apart from electricity production, the COD removal efficiency by microorganisms for cassava wastewater with α-amylase was 56% and that for untreated was 42%. Higher COD removal rate and power outputs were obtained for both pretreatment methods compared to the control. This shows that cassava wastewater can be a suitable substrate for electricity generation.","PeriodicalId":360345,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE Conference on Clean Energy and Technology (CET)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-06-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130369083","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

They have recently showed that the degradative extraction at around 350°C using a non-polar solvent such as 1-methylnaphthalene under 10 MPa is effective to recover several fractions having similar chemical and physical properties from a wide range of low-rank coals. In this paper the applicability of the method to much lower grade carbonaceous resources is examined. Two biomasses, cellulose, lignite, a peat and four low rank coals, and mixed samples of biomass and two coals were treated by 1-methylnaphthalene at 350°C to upgrade and to fractionate the raw materials into several fractions having similar chemical and physical properties. The extracted fractions, Solubles and Deposits, were very close to each other in elemental composition, chemical structure, molecular weight distribution, pyrolysis behavior, and softening/melting behavior. Thus, the proposed degradative solvent extraction method was found to be effective to convert low grade carbonaceous resources into solid fuels having higher heating values and significantly upgraded compounds having similar chemical and physical properties.","PeriodicalId":360345,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE Conference on Clean Energy and Technology (CET)","volume":"85 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-06-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114351491","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A 6-switch topology with bidirectional power flow capability is presented. The modified PWM switching strategy is discussed and verified via Matlab-Simulink and implemented in Digital Signal Processor (DSP) TMS320F28335. The topology and the switching technique performed well for sinusoidal input current, power factor, harmonic distortion level of the ac input currents, and regulated dc voltage, and enabled return of power flow from the dc side back to the ac. This paper presents experimental results of pulverized coal combustion in a 20 kW furnace on combustion in air and O<inf>2</inf>/CO<inf>2</inf> mixtures. The effectiveness of oxidant staging on reducing NO<inf>x</inf> emissions was investigated for combustion in O<inf>2</inf>/CO<inf>2</inf> mixtures in comparison to that in air combustion. The fate of recycled NO<inf>x</inf> in combustion with various oxidants and combustion conditions was also investigated. The results show that simply replacing the N<inf>2</inf> in the combustion air with CO<inf>2</inf> will result in a significant decrease of combustion gas temperatures. However, with a same firing rate and combustion stoichiometry, coal combustion in 30∶70-O<inf>2</inf>/CO<inf>2</inf> produced a similar flame temperature profiles to those in air combustion, while producing a significantly lower furnace NO<inf>x</inf> emission and a higher char burnout. The staged combustion tests show that oxidant-staging is a very effective method in reducing NO<inf>x</inf> emissions for coal combustion in 30∶70-O<inf>2</inf>/CO<inf>2</inf>, and can be more effective than in staged-air combustion. The recycled NO<inf>x</inf> tests results show that the reduction efficiency of the recycled NO depends on the combustion media, combustion conditions and NO<inf>x</inf> recycling injection locations, and is influenced by the coal properties but not by the recycled NO<inf>x</inf> concentrations. Compared to those in air combustion, NO<inf>x</inf> reduction efficiency in 30∶70-O<inf>2</inf>:CO<inf>2</inf> is more sensitive to coal properties, particularly the coal fuel ratio","PeriodicalId":360345,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE Conference on Clean Energy and Technology (CET)","volume":"35 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-06-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131983800","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Properly harvested, it can optimally benefit. Malaysia has a particularly abundant source of renewable energies; for solar, as evidenced by a 4.21kWh/m2 to 5.56kWh/m2 average daily radiation with a high of 6.8kWh/m2 (purportedly in August and November). Present installed capacity totaling 20,493MW, is estimated to reach 23,099MW maximum-demand capacity in 2020, by when 190MWp of cumulative solar energy would have been installed. Incentives should be offered to boost solar energy's economic feasibility. This paper examines the Malaysian government's various policies on, and implementation of, solar energy technology. It suggests methods and policies for provision of safe, cost-effective, quality energy, and discusses environmental sustainability and diversification of solar energy resource.","PeriodicalId":360345,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE Conference on Clean Energy and Technology (CET)","volume":"77 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-06-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115851339","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
