Departing from the common conception of providing flexibility using fossil-fuelled generators with fast ramp rates, this paper explores the use of demand-side resources. A technique to optimize the balance between the flexibility provided by fast generating units and the flexibility achievable from demand side management (DSM) is presented. This methodology is based on an extended unit commitment optimization that considers both short- and long-term aspects, i.e. operational and investment costs. The methodology is applied to the IEEE RTS (RTS-96), using actual demand and wind profiles from central Scotland.","PeriodicalId":360068,"journal":{"name":"IEEE Conference on Decision and Control and European Control Conference","volume":"89 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114922591","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Recent advancements on the study of spin dynamics strongly suggest the efficiency of geometric control theory to analyze the optimal synthesis. This paper focuses on a new approach to the contrast imaging problem using tools from geometric optimal control. It concerns the study of an uncoupled two-spin system and the problem is to bring one spin to the origin of the Bloch ball while maximizing the modulus of the magnetization vector of the second spin. It can be stated as a Mayer-type optimal problem and the Pontryagin Maximum Principle is used to select the optimal trajectories among the extremal solutions. Correlation between the contrast problem and the optimal transfer time problem is demonstrated. Further, we develop some analysis of the singular extremals and apply the results to examples of cerebrospinal fluid/water and grey/white matter of the cerebrum.","PeriodicalId":360068,"journal":{"name":"IEEE Conference on Decision and Control and European Control Conference","volume":"32 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115565209","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The proposed method overcomes the limitations of a previously proposed technique, which provides stable IPRs of systems under a restrictive assumption on the position of the eigenvalues in the complex plane. The new method here presented exploits a suitable representation of complex vectors and matrices by means of nonnegative combinations of the roots of unity, and provides a stable IPR for any stable system. The position of the eigenvalues in the complex plane only affects the state-space dimension of the IPR.","PeriodicalId":360068,"journal":{"name":"IEEE Conference on Decision and Control and European Control Conference","volume":"26 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115989317","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The method builds on the equivalent representation of the time-delay system as an infinite-dimensional linear problem. It combines ideas from a finite-dimensional approximation via a spectral discretization on the one hand, and a Krylov-Padé model reduction approach on the other hand. The method exhibits a good spectral approximation of the original model, in the sense that the smallest characteristic roots are well approximated and the non-converged eigenvalues of the reduced model have a favorable location, and it preserves moments at zero and at infinity. The model reduction approach is illustrated by means of a PDE model for a heated rod with delay in the boundary control.","PeriodicalId":360068,"journal":{"name":"IEEE Conference on Decision and Control and European Control Conference","volume":"33 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122298634","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

For this purpose, an extended internal model control (EIMC) structure aiming at accessing the residuals embedded in control loop is first proposed. Based on the identification of the so-called parity subspace and a well-established mapping between the parity vector and the solution of the Luenberger equations, a direct design scheme of EIMC from process data is developed. The achieved results are illustrated by an academic example.","PeriodicalId":360068,"journal":{"name":"IEEE Conference on Decision and Control and European Control Conference","volume":"24 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122352977","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In order to perform the parameter tuning of the IMC, we utilize the fictitious reference iterative tuning (FRIT), which enables us to obtain the desired parameter of the controller with only one-shot experiment data. Particularly, we propose an embedding of the internal mathematical model which is described by Laguerre expansion for describing non-minimum phase plants. Moreover, we show that the proposed approach enables us to obtain not only a desired controller but also a well-approximated mathematical model of the actual non-minimum phase plant simultaneously.","PeriodicalId":360068,"journal":{"name":"IEEE Conference on Decision and Control and European Control Conference","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122412138","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this problem formulation: (i) each agent has simple stochastic dynamics with inputs directly controlling its state's rate of change, and (ii) each agent seeks to minimize its individual cost function involving a mean field coupling to the states of all other agents. For this dynamic game problem, a set of coupled deterministic (Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman and Fokker-Planck-Kolmogorov) equations is derived approximating the stochastic system of agents in the continuum (i.e., as the population size N goes to infinity). In a finite population system (analogous to the individual based approach): (i) the resulting MF control strategies possess an εN-Nash equilibrium property where εN goes to zero as the population size N approaches infinity, and (ii) these MF control strategies steer each individual's state toward the initial state population mean which is reached asymptotically as time goes to infinity. Hence, the system with decentralized MF control strategies reaches mean-consensus on the initial state population mean asymptotically (as time goes to infinity).","PeriodicalId":360068,"journal":{"name":"IEEE Conference on Decision and Control and European Control Conference","volume":"142 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122918261","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The desired trajectory is modelled as the solution of a reference system with an exogenous input. It is assumed that the desired trajectory and the exogenous input to the reference system are uniformly bounded. Given a continuous-time controller that guarantees global uniform asymptotic tracking of the desired trajectory our algorithm provides an event based controller that not only guarantees semiglobal uniform ultimate boundedness of the tracking error, but also ensures non-accumulation of inter-execution times. In the special case that the derivative of the exogenous input to the reference system is also uniformly bounded, the proposed control algorithm can be used to design an ultimate bound that is arbitrarily small. The main ideas in the paper are illustrated through simulations of trajectory tracking by a nonlinear system.","PeriodicalId":360068,"journal":{"name":"IEEE Conference on Decision and Control and European Control Conference","volume":"79 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122498962","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
