Behaviors are managed by continuously running processes (Systems) which select entities by the components they possess. This model facilitates the handling and reuse of behaviors. It allows to define the interaction modalities of an application globally, by formulating them as a set of Systems. We present Polyphony, an experimental toolkit implementing this approach, detail our interpretation of the ECS model in the context of GUIs, and demonstrate its use with a sample application.","PeriodicalId":356460,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 30th Conference on l'Interaction Homme-Machine","volume":"40 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-10-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126183790","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The objective of this method set up in educational environment with pupils aged 9-11 years old was to design devices supporting creativity in narrative activities. The DIMI method consists of four stages: Discover - Invent - Mix - Iterate, and integrates the child as a socio-culturally situated subject. This anthropocentric method is based on an analysis of children activity structured with their schemes in order design devices that make sense for the subject and that allow him to transform them into instruments while transforming himself. The reference situation that we analyze here with the instrumental approach (Rabardel, 1995) focuses on the creation of a collective tale.","PeriodicalId":356460,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 30th Conference on l'Interaction Homme-Machine","volume":"144 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-10-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116786406","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The thirty-three participants were initially separated into two groups, depending on the type of task (slider or push) and thus conducted under two levels of cognitive load modulated by the OSPAN task (operation-word-span) which solicits working memory where the participant is asked to check the accuracy of a calculation or retain a word while interacting with a touch screen and performed these tasks in a driving simulator. The subjective results showed that i) for the slider, the pressure is preferred over the capacitive and timer modes. However, this is not verified for the pushes, ii) The subjective questionnaires confirmed the interest of the vibrotactile return as well in terms of preference, feeling of security and confidence regarding the touch screen. Conversely, the results obtained via the Driving Activity Load Index (DALI) questionnaire did not show any significant results.","PeriodicalId":356460,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 30th Conference on l'Interaction Homme-Machine","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-10-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131055144","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, performance on small and distant targets is impacted by the accuracy of the pointing device and the user's motor skills. Current pointing facilitation techniques are currently only applied in the context of the virtual hand, i.e. for targets within reach. We propose to add a cursor on the ray, controlled by the user. This allows target pointing techniques by proximity to be applied, such as the Bubble Cursor. We describe a study comparing several visual feedbacks for this technique. Our results show that just highlighting the nearest target reduces the selection time by 14.8% and the error rate by 82.6% compared to Raycasting in the general case. For small targets, the selection time is reduced by 25.7% and the error rate by 90.8%.","PeriodicalId":356460,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 30th Conference on l'Interaction Homme-Machine","volume":"30 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-10-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132248288","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, their massive use is limited due to several aspects, such as the complicated user interaction or the wearing of special devices for medical identification. In order to find solutions to the problems mentioned above, we have adopted an approach based on proxemic interaction. In this context, we propose a First Aid Mobile Application (FAMA) based on Proxemic-interaction and developed with Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) Beacon technology. In the first evaluation, we describe the technical aspects and challenges related with the development of FAMA. The results demonstrate the benefit of using proxemic interaction to implement HCI, in the context of emergency and rescue services, in terms of better performance and accessibility, compared with existing first aid mobile applications.","PeriodicalId":356460,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 30th Conference on l'Interaction Homme-Machine","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-10-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134297402","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To address this challenge, we introduce new space-efficient visual designs for time series based on an approach similar to the well established Horizon Graph, namely \"composite\" visual mapping. In this approach, each data attribute is decomposed into two components and then each component is mapped onto a separate visual channel. Our visual designs consist in different combinations ofgeometric and optical visual channels. We compare our propositions with Horizon Graph across different chart heights and we measure accuracy and speed of users in a discrimination and estimation task. Our results show that although Horizon Graph perform best at larger chart heights, our propositions demonstrate same levels of accuracy in small chart heights. Moreover, at least one of our propositions has significant advantage over Horizon Graphs in terms of speed. Based on our findings, we propose design guidelines for using composite visual mapping and combinations of optical visual channels in limited vertical screen resolution settings.","PeriodicalId":356460,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 30th Conference on l'Interaction Homme-Machine","volume":"12 4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-10-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133870979","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, these techniques were not adapted to realistic usage situations. Additionally, when the use of a pen tablet is required, to annotate a document for example, its use in combination with the standard keyboard and mouse often results in homing time cost. In this paper we explore a bimanual approach to support major MDE tasks: it is based on the combination of a multi-degree of freedom device and a pen. Moreover, we explain our approach and current implementation. Finally, we discuss our future work and envisioned studies to evaluate the usability of such an approach.","PeriodicalId":356460,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 30th Conference on l'Interaction Homme-Machine","volume":"6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-10-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116397035","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Eco-feedback methods allow users to get information about their electricity consumption to reduce it. However it is still difficult to determine what are the actions that impact the consumption in practice. In this paper we suggest to apply a What if approach to eco-feedback in a household context. We deploy the Activelec system in personal housings, which allows to apply virtual modifications in appliances usage and to evaluate the savings realized. The results of our experimentation show that participants appreciated the interaction method based on the What if. It allowed them to find and to evaluate efficient modifications in their appliances usage, and several have been applied in practice by the participants. This experimentation shows that the What if paradigm is a potential way for eco-feedback technologies.","PeriodicalId":356460,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 30th Conference on l'Interaction Homme-Machine","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-10-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127531564","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
