Al-Majali","doi":"10.35516/hum.v50i5.1069","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.35516/hum.v50i5.1069","url":null,"abstract":"Objectives: The aim of this study is to determine the level of stressful life events during the spread of the COVID-19 virus, as well as the strategies used to deal with these stressful events and the relationship between stressful life events and psychological adjustment. Methods: A cross-sectional web-based observational study. A survey was carried out among Jordanian universities using random sampling. The validity and reliability of the study tools (Psychological Adjustment Scale, Coping Strategies with Stressful Life Events Scale, and Stressful Life Events Scale) were confirmed. 229 participants, with an average age of 36.15 ± 14.05 years were selected to participate in this study. Results: The findings revealed that the overall level of stressful life events was moderate. Political events were ranked first, followed by economic, emotional, health, social, and family events. The findings also indicated that the positive interaction strategy was one of the most widely used approaches to dealing with stressful life events. Most of the correlations between stressful life events and the degree of psychological adjustment were inverse correlations (r = -0.58, p = 0.01). Al-Khawaldeh","doi":"10.35516/hum.v50i5.1636","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.35516/hum.v50i5.1636","url":null,"abstract":"Objectives: The study aimed at examining the use of refusals by Jordanian Arabic and Castilian Spanish speakers when declining invitations from their friends, focusing on similarities and differences in terms of head strategies, adjuncts, order, and frequency. Methods: A discourse completion task (DCT) comprising various situations were designed to elicit refusals from the participants. Drawing on Beebe et al’s categorization (1990), the data were categorized into head acts (subdivided into direct and indirect strategies) and adjuncts to refusal. Results: Although the Jordanian and Spanish participants belong to two distant cultures (eastern and western), the findings revealed that they were more similar than different in their refusals. They both showed a stronger tendency for indirectness in refusing invitations, with the Jordanians being more indirect. Both groups commonly utilized the strategies of statement of regret, giving reason, and negative ability, with different degrees of preference and frequency. As for adjuncts, both groups were inclined to employ a high percentage of adjuncts either before or after head strategies of refusal. While the Jordanians preferred the adjuncts of gratitude and swearing, the Spanish participants preferred gratitude and positive opinion. Both groups showed predilection to combine the same typical components in their refusal responses but differ in the order in which these components appeared. The employment of indirect refusal strategies and adjuncts in the Jordanian and Spanish responses pragmatically served to mitigate potentially negative effects of refusal on the inviters. It aims to show that Edward Said’s postmodern humanism provides intriguing insights which challenge the mainstream interpretations implied by Renaissance humanism. Methods: The study deconstructs the point-counterpoint structure in the aforesaid plays to acknowledge the feasibility of different interpretations for the Oriental discourse using Said’s postmodern humanism. It compares and contrasts Shakespeare’s Renaissance humanism with Said’s understanding of postmodern humanism to show that the latter underscores the necessity of inclusion and the triumphant integration of the Oriental in Western societies. The study opens the Shakespearean texts to new interpretations by examining their humanistic inclinations vis- à vis postmodern humanism which puts its philosophical stances into effective practice in order to influence the global imagination, empower the “Other” and entail ideological change. Results: Shakespeare’s humanism mitigates his Orientalism but does not reverse the stereotypical representation of the “Other” as an individual with exotic cultural background who fails to have a normal relationship with a Western spouse. Shakespeare’s latent advocacy of the stereotypical representation of the “Other” becomes manifest in the outcome of the marriage relationship with the Oriental. The cultural barrier hampers the successful union between the Oriental and the Westerner; accordingly, Shakespeare portrays this relationship as either tragic or comic. Methods: The sample consisted of (55) male juveniles in short-term detention at Al-Zohour Security Center, using the available method. The cognitive Distortions scale was applied to them after extracting its validity and reliability. Results: The results indicated that the level of cognitive distortions was moderate and that cognitive distortion “minimization and maximization” came at a high level while “reading what was in the minds of others” came last at a low level. The results also showed no significant differences attributed to the effect of the family’s monthly income in all areas except in excessive generalization” in favor of those with monthly income from 500 to 1000 JD. There were no significant differences due to the effect of birth order. Conclusion: It was found that cognitive distortions exist among juveniles who are drug abusers to a moderate degree, and this means that these juveniles have a problem regarding the use of these cognitive distortions. These individuals need to know the reality of these distortions and the extent of their impact on its lives. {"title":"The Influence of Perceived Faculty Support on Psychological Health among Jordanian University Students","authors":"Ghada Shahrour, Mohammad Abdulhameed Alqudah, Amjad Al-Khayat, Kholoud Abu Obead","doi":"10.35516/hum.v50i5.1135","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.35516/hum.v50i5.1135","url":null,"abstract":"Objectives: This study aimed to assess the levels of stress, depression, and anxiety among Jordanian university students and whether faculty support plays a role in ameliorating student’s depression and anxiety. Methods: A cross-sectional study used a convenience sample of 18-25-year-old undergraduate students from five public and three private Jordanian universities. An online survey via EasyQuest was employed with prior university approvals. The survey link, including the consent form, was distributed through university websites, student union pages, and online student groups. The survey collected data on perceived stress, depression, anxiety, and student-faculty interaction from 1,067 university students (64.9% female). Results: The findings showed that Jordanian university students experience a substantial amount of stress, depression, and anxiety. While students’ stress increased their depression and anxiety, perceived faculty support had a significant ameliorating effect. Students scored their faculty interaction to be highest on the subscales of validity, respectful interactions, and approachability. On the other hand, having off-campus interaction with faculty and feeling a sense of connectedness had the lowest scores. Male university students expressed more depression and experienced less respectful interactions with university faculty than female students. Methods: The study is mainly based on the analysis of Saudi and British documents, especially those of the British Foreign Office, the Indian Office Records, the information available in British newspapers, and primary and secondary sources. Results: The turbulent political and military situation in Arabia prompted Britain to invite Ibn Saud for a settlement with Sharif Hussein. The apparent British bias reflected in the difficulties faced by the delegation, which were not compatible with the usual diplomatic norms, and ultimately led to the failure of the visit to achieve tangible results for either party.
