Lazaric","doi":"10.1051/EJESS:2000115","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1051/EJESS:2000115","url":null,"abstract":"In this article the role of habits, rules and norms for collective learning will be discussed. These concepts, although usually shown as being quite different, have certain similarities and complementarities. Routines and habits in the Veblenian tradition are two inseparable notions. In Simon's work, routines are explained more as a cognitive tool to avoid exhaustive deliberation. Rules and rou- tines in Simon's work are identified using the artificialist approach and defined with analogy to the computer. This perspective, which is quite different to that proposed by Veblen, can be used to explain human problem solving and bounded rationality in organizations. The definition of routines from a cognitive perspective proposed by Nelson and Winter in 1982 is far removed from the Veblenian legacy and Simon's work. Here the notion of tacit knowledge is introduced in order to show that it is difficult to duplicate routines and that the artificialist approach cannot always be used to tackle the many different kinds of knowledge anchored in routines. Despite the important work conducted by Nelson and Winter, routines are nevertheless difficult to decipher in organizations and their different ontological levels (concrete and abstract levels) can give rise to some confusion for observers. For this reason, most authors now admit that it is possible to describe routines using the concrete level on the one hand and with their formal representation on the other (as a general rule). Notions of rules, routines and habits are sometimes assimilated, sometimes distinguished/separated depending on the ontological or epistemological level which is being referred to. Although the debate surrounding this issue is important, it is crucial not to forget the existence of the cognitive and political dimensions of every rule, routine and habit in collective learning. This is probably the main conclusion of this article, beyond the epistemological and ontological discussion.","PeriodicalId":352454,"journal":{"name":"European Journal of Economic and Social Systems","volume":"15 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117091147","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

While innovation processes are being increasingly structured around a new para- digm and markets are being both globalized and fragmented, firms are attempting to adapt, above all by refocusing their businesses and by redefining all the links in their value chain. However, the most significant changes in their strategy lie in the conception of their horizontal and vertical relations. The competitive game has a tendency to being extended to phases upstream market competition, to be reconfig- ured in the form of intra and inter-coalitions and networks strategic games, and to quickly evolve along with technological innovations, the opening of new market \"frontiers\" and successive concentration operations. The pharmaceutical industry thus constitutes a sort of life-size \"laboratory\" for an in-depth analysis of the effects of radical institutional and technological changes on the new shapes of competitive structuring within markets undergoing rapid globalization, and of the \"spontaneous\" emergence of a new form of industrial organization.","PeriodicalId":352454,"journal":{"name":"European Journal of Economic and Social Systems","volume":"14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129678102","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The starting point for the analysis is the definition of organisational learning proposed by Levitt and March (1988) in terms of the transformation of an organisation's rou- tines. This definition leads to a focus on the 'organisational link' or the way in which individual routines and various learning processes are coordinated, thus assuring a degree of organisational coherence. In comparing the different organisa- tional theories of Simon (1947), March and Simon (1958), Cyert and March (1963) and Nelson and Winter (1982), it is demonstrated that those authors that place pri- mary emphasis on the organisation as an processor of information tend to down- play the importance of the social, relational and political dimensions of organisation behaviour. Recognition of the dual nature of the organisational link and of the importance of political determinants leads to the conclusion that individ- ual processes of learning and inference should to be analytically distinguished from 'learning' in the sense of a transformation in the organisation's routines.","PeriodicalId":352454,"journal":{"name":"European Journal of Economic and Social Systems","volume":"19 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116869006","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The specificity of the method is to use as much information as possible as input to the model (many past values of the series, many exogenous variables), to compress this information (by a non-linear method) in order to obtain a state vector of limited size, facilitating the subsequent regression and the generalization ability of the forecasting algorithm and to fit a non-linear regressor (here a RBF neural network) on the reduced vectors. We show that this method is able to find non-linear relationships in artificial and real-world financial series. On a difficult task, which consists in forecasting the tendency of the Bel 20 stock market index, we show that this method improves the results compared both to linear models and to non-linear ones where the non-linear compression is not used.","PeriodicalId":352454,"journal":{"name":"European Journal of Economic and Social Systems","volume":"55 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121937557","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Nonaka (1990; 1994; 1995). This hypothesis supposes that interactions between individuals in a firm promote collective learning and increase innovative performances of the firm. We propose to describe, in terms of mathematical metaphors, different forms of an organizational structure, each describing innovative behavior, in order to compare their dynamical evolution. Either the organization authorizes interactions between the individuals, or the process of innovation is summarized in the individual behaviors in the form of a message. We show that the dynamics of evolution of these two forms of regulation is identical. In other words, we show that the dynamics of innovative behavior where agents interact is the same as the dynamic where the innovative performances of the firm are included in individual's contribution.","PeriodicalId":352454,"journal":{"name":"European Journal of Economic and Social Systems","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128515805","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In effect they failed to forecast this cataclysm and to provide policies for a strong and sustainable growth. During the subsequent debates the fault of orthodoxy has been pointed out. In consequence the question of the determination of an alternative is of crucial importance, particularly in the field of public economics. The first part of the article is devoted to the question of the nature of orthodox economics. The second part deals with the conditions of the emergence of heterodoxy and with the French peculiarity. Finally, the article tries to explain the reasons why public economics have failed after its neoclassical methodological reorientation at the beginning of the seventies.","PeriodicalId":352454,"journal":{"name":"European Journal of Economic and Social Systems","volume":"51 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129104187","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, the dissemination of the responsibilities and the decentralized decisions in a business network require improving our knowledge in this field. From this theoretical point of view, our article aims to explore the modes of development and regulation of the networks not supervised. After having underlined the difficulties of empirical observation at the origin of the modeling attempts, we put forward the idea according to which a network without pilot is pulled about two tensions: stability and plasticity. Indeed, to mitigate the problems of internal coherence, it is led to evolve towards a more stable form and thus more hierarchical. But, in the absence of central coordination unit, it is also directed towards a more unstable form, based on the flexibility of the embedded connections. This article is based on the hypothesis that it is the intra-organisational inertia (i.e.: the organisation lack of adaptation to any modifications of the environment) the cause of usual severe ruptures in the evolution of firms. Indeed if we consider as theorists of organisations that the interrelation settled between the organisation and its environment is structural, the questions of representation, the evolution and adaptation become essential to understand the dynamic organisation. Starting by a geometric construction a model describing the organisation dynamics will be introduced, with elements enabling us to understand what an organisational change is (construction of a taxonomy) by the forces that generate it (construction of a dynamic). It will be more precisely question of trying to identify the notion of force compared with the notion of efficiency. And taking into account “this idea of crisis” which characterise all organisational transformation a geometric explanation based on the rupture of the organisation trajectory and singularity will be suggested. The interpretation of the first results thanks to a mere example of a model application in dynamic organisation brings to the fore, the importance of its history (for instance training in this example) in its adaptation capacity proving that it may become the cause of inertia, and organisational inefficiency.
