However, with the use of high-resolution and highdefinition video cameras, complex gynecological procedures, which were previously performed by only laparotomy, can be performed via laparoscopy. Operative laparoscopy has the benefit of shorter hospital stays, less postoperative pain, and faster return to normal activity (2). Therefore, adnexal procedures, such as ectopic pregnancy and ovarian cystectomy; uterine surgery, such as myomectomy and hysterectomy; reconstruction of the pelvic floor, such as retropubic urethropexy and sacral colposuspension; and finally the staging and treatment of gynecologic cancers are performed widely and with great success by surgeons presently (1).","PeriodicalId":351803,"journal":{"name":"medical journal of islamic world academy of sciences","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134430316","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

More rarely, the disease may be accompanied by psychomotor developmental deficits. Moreover, thrombocytopenia and dissemination of clotting factors (VIII, XI, and XII) are common in these patients, especially in childhood. In a small number of the cases, pigmentation disorders such as nevus, café-au-lait spots, and lentigo occur. It is important to know that eye signs are more frequent in these patients, and usually occur as hypertelorism, downset palpebral fissures, epicentral folds, ptosis, fracture defects, strabismus, amblyopia, nystagmus, coloboma, keratoconus, and cataracts (1-3).","PeriodicalId":351803,"journal":{"name":"medical journal of islamic world academy of sciences","volume":"33 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114263344","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In Enterobacteriaceae, antibiotic resistance is linked to different mechanisms, for example the production of a certain type of enzymes named as extended-spectrum β-lactamases (ESBLs). ESBLs are plasmid-mediated and efficiently hydrolyze penicillins, third-generation cephalosporins, and aztreonam, which are commonly used to treat infections [3, 4]. In addition, antibiotic resistance due to AmpC β-lactamases, 16S rRNA methylases, aminoglycoside-modifying enzymes, and carbapenemases has also been reported [5]. ESBL-producing bacteria remain susceptible to carbapenems, and the activity of these enzymes is inhibited by clavulanic acid [6, 7]. In K. pneumoniae, AmpC beta-lactamases are located on plasmids, while in other Enterobacteriaceae spp., these enzymes are either plasmid or chromosomally encoded [8, 9]. AmpC β-lactamases confer resistance to cephamycins (e.g., cefoxitin and cefotetan) and β-lactamase inhibitor combinations [6]. Moreover, K. pneumoniae has also been found to harbor carbapenemase enzyme (KPC), which confers resistance to carbapenems such as imipenem and meropenem [10]. The emergence of carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae spp. in general and K. pneumoniae, in particular, has become a major public health problem due to lack of effective antibiotics [11], increasing the morbidity ABSTRACT","PeriodicalId":351803,"journal":{"name":"medical journal of islamic world academy of sciences","volume":"35 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121415274","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Lip cancer is located on the lower lip in 87.2%–90% of the patients (2,3). Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) constitute 95% of the lip cancers (4-6). Lower lip SCCs are most commonly seen in Caucasian male smokers. They are often seen in the sixth decade of life. Etiology is multifactorial, but prolonged sun exposure has a major role. Histological changes, such as leukoplakia, hyperkeratosis, and actinic cheilitis, are also observed in adjacent tissues. Besides, sun rays, pipe and cigarette smoking, bad dental hygiene, chronic alcoholism, and immunosuppression also contribute to tumor development. The standard treatment for lip cancer is surgical excision and reconstruction (7). Surgical excision should be done carefully and the excisional material and its boundaries should be subjected to histopathological examination in three dimensions to obtain the highest cure rate and the smallest defect size (8). A probability exists of recurrence and regional metastasis in 5%–15% of all lower lip SCCs (9). Distant metastasis is expected in 15% of these patients. Histopathologically, tumor thickness is a determining factor for regional metastasis. Therefore, it is an important criterion in treatment planning (10). In the present study, 40 patients with lip SCC were reported. The purpose of the study was to evaluate these patients in terms of epidemiology, histopathology, and recurrence.","PeriodicalId":351803,"journal":{"name":"medical journal of islamic world academy of sciences","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129640300","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It has been reported that 3% of all fractures are pelvic fractures, and rigid clinical observation is required (1, 2). Patients with pelvic fractures are prone to bleeding. Pelvic fractures are associated with serious head, chest, stomach, and spine injuries. Organ injuries can cause high mortality and morbidity rates (3, 4, 5, 6). Fast and intensive treatment management is necessary to reduce mortality and morbidity (7). When a pelvic fracture is diagnosed at the emergency department, the hemodynamic parameters should first be stabilized and then the patient should be assessed for multisystem injuries, primarily gastrointestinal and urogenital.","PeriodicalId":351803,"journal":{"name":"medical journal of islamic world academy of sciences","volume":"59 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127083541","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
