This research aims to explore to what extent advertisers manipulate language rather distinctively than the daily use of language. The current work presents a descriptive analysis of the linguistic features of Urdu ads at semantic level. The study uses qualitative approach where twenty Urdu hoardings were selected through purposive sampling technique from Gulberg and Hall Road, Lahore. The writer collected the data by looking at the meaning of advertisements printed on hoardings. In analyzing the data, the writer applied Leech’s theory of semantics. The writer found the use of connotative words, adjectives, coined words,misspelled words, repetition, and the ambiguous statements in advertisements on hoardings. Every message has a very important role to play in building up the advertiser’s message. So, on the basis of these findings it is stated that advertisers use persuasive language while violating the semantic laws which is distinctive from the language used in every day communication.","PeriodicalId":347941,"journal":{"name":"Global Mass Communication Review","volume":"95 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-06-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126450534","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A self-report 17-items questionnaire based on PTSD civilian version (PCL-C) was administered to 252 working journalists of Peshawar Press Clubs. The findings revealed that 17.3% of journalists exhibit extreme while 31.1% show higher PTSD symptoms. Since this paper is aimed at journalists, their unions, media houses and NGOs, therefore, specialized jargons of psychiatric literature have been avoided. Instead, simple language has been used. The paper stresses the need that psychiatric establishment and media industry should build a joint body of knowledge to create awareness and a conducive environment for journalists to seek counselling. Although the law-and-order situation has now improved, there is a dire need for post-conflict reflexivity. Also, PTSD symptoms sometimes appear at quite later stages.","PeriodicalId":347941,"journal":{"name":"Global Mass Communication Review","volume":"34 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-03-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133135534","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
