To overcome this problem in the GB system, National Grid Electricity System Operator (NGESO) has started procuring fast frequency support services, named Dynamic Containment (DC). This paper stud-ies the effectiveness of primary frequency response services and DC services provided by Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) with respect to containing frequency within statutory limits (above 49.5 Hz.). Reduced order power plant and BESS models appropriate for the GB system have been developed to study frequency containment service provision. The simulation results obtained showed that DC significantly improves the frequency nadir of the GB system under low inertia conditions but has a very small effect on the Rate of Change of Frequency (ROCOF). The results obtained support the selection of DC capacity target of approximately 1 GW by the GB electricity system operator NGESO.","PeriodicalId":347664,"journal":{"name":"The 17th International Conference on AC and DC Power Transmission (ACDC 2021)","volume":"29 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115292472","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The ultrafast dv/dt test replicates the very fast electrical insulation breakdown voltage transient that occurs during the dielectric breakdown within SF6 wall bushings. The fast di/dt test replicates short circuits occurring within a valve structure where the local valve capacitors can feed the fault with merely the valve stray inductance to limit the resulting di/dt. Both tests can cause maloperation and damage to HVDC valves if valves are not designed to cope with them. The circumstances surrounding the fault conditions that mandate these tests are discussed, suggested type test methods are presented and typical results from these tests for GE's new Generation 2 VSC valve are stated.","PeriodicalId":347664,"journal":{"name":"The 17th International Conference on AC and DC Power Transmission (ACDC 2021)","volume":"71 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116288258","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The new technique is a hybrid technique that combines two metaheuristic-based algorithms: Particle Swarm Optimizer (PSO) and Grey Wolf Optimization (GWO). This new technique facilitates the selection of the best gain values of the controller used in the power system under study. The controller utilized in this study is the classical proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controller. This classical controller is selected in this study to make a reliable comparison with other applied techniques. The study’s main goal is to retain the system frequency and tie-line power within permissible limits after applying a load disturbance to one of the system areas. The system under test is built as a three area network with thermal power generation units. The hybrid PSO-GWO (HPSOGWO) algorithm is applied to the system under test. The results obtained are verified by comparing them with other techniques, including the bacterial foraging technique (BFOA) and harmony search technique (HS). The results show that the HPSOGWO algorithm can preserve the frequency and tie-line power within the permissible bounds faster and with better transient specifications than that obtained using the other algorithms under comparison. The three area system is simulated in MATLAB environment for an easier interface.","PeriodicalId":347664,"journal":{"name":"The 17th International Conference on AC and DC Power Transmission (ACDC 2021)","volume":"185 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128513323","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Owned as a mutualised asset by Mutual Energy Limited, Moyle delivers cost-benefit to Northern Ireland’s energy consumers. Moyle uses Line Commutated Converter technology and is now in the process of a mid-life control system upgrade. This paper describes the overall project and discusses some of the key areas such as the changing operating environment, and the functionality being added to address these changes. It also considers how the replacement control system will be tested. The primary improvements are the use of a ‘round power’ mode to remove an existing deadband, more sophisticated ancillary services, and the use of a replica control system to improve risk management.","PeriodicalId":347664,"journal":{"name":"The 17th International Conference on AC and DC Power Transmission (ACDC 2021)","volume":"18 11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125904690","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper aims to determine the primary DC wind farm candidates for commercialisation based on cost-effectiveness and technological risk. A systematic review was performed of the literature that formally assesses the cost, losses or reliability of DC wind farm configurations. The optimal configurations were found to be dependent on the methodology and assumptions used by each study, as well as the individual wind farm characteristics. Series and series-parallel DC designs without offshore platform performed well in terms of costs, but have challenges in operation and reliability that limit the short-term opportunity for commercialisation. The standard DC parallel topology has the lowest technological risk, but the mean cost reported in the literature is similar to that of AC topologies. Standard parallel DC wind farms are the primary candidate for the first commercial DC wind farm demonstrators, but the optimal design will likely need to be determined on a case-by-case basis. Guidelines for this assessment are provided.","PeriodicalId":347664,"journal":{"name":"The 17th International Conference on AC and DC Power Transmission (ACDC 2021)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122668673","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Its role as nexus between the European and the African Continents is becoming more and more significant due to the realization in a short time of the so called Tyrrhenian link and the High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) connection with Tunisia. In this framework, the paper presents a model of the Sicily power generation and transmission system, including the Tyrrhenian link and two equivalent buses representing the Sardinian power network and the rest of the Continental Europe (CE) synchronous area, for both steady-state and dynamic analysis. The model is developed in Neplan and it is based on the actual structure of the Sicilian power system. The rest of the CE system is represented in the model and validated by a comparison with the large-scale dynamic model of the CE provided by the European Network of Transmission System Operators for Electricity (ENTSO-E). Finally, some simulations of the Sicilian grid in future energy scenarios are presented, and the behaviour of the system is discussed considering different transient conditions.","PeriodicalId":347664,"journal":{"name":"The 17th International Conference on AC and DC Power Transmission (ACDC 2021)","volume":"309 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122808746","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

One of the methods of voltage management is through the deployment of Static Synchronous Compensators (STATCOMs) on NIE Networks' 11kV distribution network. This project will specify and trial an 11kV STATCOM. The objective of the project is to improve the utilisation of distribution network assets through the integration of a STATCOM to control voltages to within a smaller band, deferring network reinforcements and accommodating further demand and micro generation which would otherwise be constrained by voltage levels. STATCOMs work by absorbing or providing reactive power to tackle voltage issues and so can be used on networks that experience both high and low voltage.","PeriodicalId":347664,"journal":{"name":"The 17th International Conference on AC and DC Power Transmission (ACDC 2021)","volume":"44 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129778485","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Procurement of these services is critical because of the availability and cost of resources and uncertainty in power generation due to the increasing number of renewable sources. Due to the changing generation mix, it is crucial that the transmission system operator has access to the resources for these services. As the number of HVDC interconnections is increasing in Europe, it is imperative to consider their utilization for reserve procurement. This paper proposes a mathematical model for examining the economic aspects of frequency restoration reserves procurement with HVDC systems. The proposed model is used for analysis on two asynchronous systems connected via an HVDC link. The analysis shows that procurement of frequency restoration reserves with HVDC systems increases social welfare; however, it is highly dependent on the availability of HVDC systems capacity.","PeriodicalId":347664,"journal":{"name":"The 17th International Conference on AC and DC Power Transmission (ACDC 2021)","volume":"34 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115996339","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Several GFM technologies including the Synchronverter, a particular member of Virtual Synchronous Machine (VSM), and GFM droop, based on standard current control and droop, have been suggested. The controllers have been compared and found to be equivalent to each other in steady state. The equivalence generally focusses on individual operating conditions and fails to address differences in dynamic properties. This paper provides a clear tuning guide of both controls in terms of SM properties and a discussion of the analytical equivalence using the output of time-domain medium-voltage DC (MVDC) converter models. Initially, the GFM droop is found to be less damped despite the equivalent tuning in terms of damping ratio. A parametric sweep of the cascaded control present within the GFM droop finds that the Voltage Control bandwidth and proportional gain can be tuned to adjust the damping of the response. The Voltage Control parameters are also found to affect the GFM droop’s stability.","PeriodicalId":347664,"journal":{"name":"The 17th International Conference on AC and DC Power Transmission (ACDC 2021)","volume":"70 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127360346","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

One of the expected consequences is the reduction of system inertia. A promising alternative for this problem is the integration of energy storage elements (ESEs) into modular multilevel converters (MMCs). This paper presents a novel design methodology for a 3-phase MMC with partial integration of energy storage (MMC-PIES). The arms of the proposed converter contain standard submodules without energy storage (SMs) and submodules with an integrated ESE (ES-SMs). ESSMs with half-bridge (HB) and full-bridge (FB) topologies are explored, while an HB configuration is kept for standard SMs. The methodology includes a minimisation of the amplitude of the circulating current that needs to be injected and a method to calculate the specifications of the converter. Like the results found in the literature, the proposed approach shows that using FB cells demands less ES-SMs. However, it is identified that the capacitances and ESEs must be remarkably bulkier, rendering this topology less attractive. The results also show that the partial integration with HB ES-SMs is a viable solution, causing only a small impact on the SM capacitance and on the ESEs rating.","PeriodicalId":347664,"journal":{"name":"The 17th International Conference on AC and DC Power Transmission (ACDC 2021)","volume":"26 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131781669","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
