APPLICATION OF A DISTRIBUTION STATCOM TO MANAGE NETWORK VOLTAGES
NIE Networks Voltage Management (VM) project is exploring the ability to actively manage network voltage, unlocking network capacity to connect further demand and distributed generation. One of the methods of voltage management is through the deployment of Static Synchronous Compensators (STATCOMs) on NIE Networks' 11kV distribution network. This project will specify and trial an 11kV STATCOM. The objective of the project is to improve the utilisation of distribution network assets through the integration of a STATCOM to control voltages to within a smaller band, deferring network reinforcements and accommodating further demand and micro generation which would otherwise be constrained by voltage levels. STATCOMs work by absorbing or providing reactive power to tackle voltage issues and so can be used on networks that experience both high and low voltage.
