With a significant proportion of solar energy resource concentrated on the Australian and African continents, and load centres in Europe and the ASEAN regions, HVDC projects with cable connection lengths greater than 3000 km are under development. This paper develops a frequency dependent model (FDM) of the DC cable for the Sun Cable Australia-ASEAN Power Link (AAPowerLink). The effect of field joints and the associated earthing resistance is addressed. Exclusion of field joints introduces discrepancy in the core voltage along the cable length and the frequency dependent impedance. Simplification of the cable model within an electromagnetic transient (EMT) platform, whilst retaining a representative frequency dependent behaviour, is demonstrated. Modelling in PSCAD/EMTDC suggests minimum impact of submersion depth on the cable characteristics. Furthermore, the potential for harvesting energy at the field joints is explored.","PeriodicalId":347664,"journal":{"name":"The 17th International Conference on AC and DC Power Transmission (ACDC 2021)","volume":"35 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-05-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124326256","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Focus is paid on the effects of FFR injection location within the transmission network. To allow the analysis to be easily generalised to other low inertia systems, a test system incorporating wind generation and HVDC interconnectors has been used. The FFR is provided by distributed storage devices with grid-following converters. It is shown that FFR can reduce transient stability despite the fact that frequency excursions are arrested. Synchronous generators in the system that are initially operating with a high relative angle displacement and which have low synchronous kinetic energy are considered critical with respect to this analysis. FFR delivered electrically close to critical generators is shown to cause larger angle divergence and will result in a greater chance of transient instability. Variations in system inertia, FFR capacity, disturbance location and network topology have also been stud-ied to establish how severely the transient stability is affected when FFR is delivered at different locations within the system.","PeriodicalId":347664,"journal":{"name":"The 17th International Conference on AC and DC Power Transmission (ACDC 2021)","volume":"28 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115181452","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The inductors are also useful for identifying whether a fault is on the line to be protected or not, as they form a filter for wave-fronts originating from external faults. In DC-side fault studies, they are predominantly represented by their (lumped) inductance, thereby neglecting resonance effects due to stray capacitances, whose effect is within this context as yet not investigated. To fill this gap, this paper documents the resonance behavior of air-core inductors and the effect of including this behavior in DC-side fault studies. The paper furthermore compares results as obtained with EMT-type simulation software with those obtained with the Numerical Inverse Laplace Transform (NILT). Including the resonance effect is found to be more important for overhead line than in cable systems, and attention needs to be paid to the choice of simulation time step in EMT-type software.","PeriodicalId":347664,"journal":{"name":"The 17th International Conference on AC and DC Power Transmission (ACDC 2021)","volume":"260 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123966584","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Control strategies, recreating synchronous machines stabilising effects, can be implemented in static converters to provide an inertial response after a disturbance. This paper assesses the inertial support that can be supplied by Modular Multilevel Converters (MMCs) with a Virtual Synchronous Machine (VSM) control strategy in a Voltage Source Converter (VSC) High-Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) point-to-point link. To evaluate the inertial support and the resulting influence on the ac grid dynamics, the active power flowing in the link, the rate of change of frequency, and the frequency nadir of the ac grid are analysed. A time-domain sensitivity analysis is carried to show the effect of the VSM parameters on the power, frequency support and impact of converter saturation limits. The results demonstrate an improvement in the frequency behaviour of the ac grid dependent on the selection of the VSM parameters.","PeriodicalId":347664,"journal":{"name":"The 17th International Conference on AC and DC Power Transmission (ACDC 2021)","volume":"15 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126416732","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the established HIL test configuration, simulated voltage and current waveforms from a Real Time Digital Simulator (RTDS) are injected to the relays via an analogue physical amplifier, and the relays' tripping signals are input back in the RTDS to monitor their tripping actions. During the HIL tests, the relay is configured with both MHO and QUAD characteristics, and it is tested during a wide range of system operating conditions with different fault levels, fault types and locations, and HVDC control strategies. The test results show that the integration of the HVDC system could lead to compromised distance protection performance, included failed tripping, delayed tripping and zone discrimination issues. Detailed analysis of the test results is presented, and it is found that the main causes of the identified issues include: 1) under-reach/over-reach problem owing to the angle difference of currents from local and remote ends in the event of resistive faults; 2) inaccurate impedance measurement problem due to identical faulty phase currents during phase-to-phase faults with the constant reactive power control of HVDC system; 3) phase selection issues owing to the abnormal increase of the superimposed currents during phase-earth fault with balanced current control of HVDC system. The results and analysis presented in this paper will not only offer valuable evidence-based insights to understand the challenges of distance protection in future converter-dominated networks, but also provide a useful reference, informing future research and development to address these identified issues.","PeriodicalId":347664,"journal":{"name":"The 17th International Conference on AC and DC Power Transmission (ACDC 2021)","volume":"42 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129027888","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, in many cases, it has been observed that this has an enduring effect on these machines by higher thermo-mechanical stresses while causing increased lifetime losses. Hence, there is much more need than ever to revisit the various cooling methods traditionally adopted for large rotating machines. This paper addresses the challenges due to the emerging operating characteristic of large rotating machines and describes the recent technological advancement in the cooling techniques for large rotating machines.","PeriodicalId":347664,"journal":{"name":"The 17th International Conference on AC and DC Power Transmission (ACDC 2021)","volume":"100 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132019444","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To meet a net zero ambition by 2050 it is suggested that an installed Offshore Wind capacity of 40 GW by 2030 and 75 GW by 2050 would need to be connected to the GB Electricity System. In addition, the Electricity System Operator indicates more than 20 GW of Interconnection would also be required. However, Wind Farms and Interconnectors are currently connected as single purpose projects to the Onshore Transmission system and continuing this arrangement will bring major permitting challenges and disruption to coastal communities. This paper proposes the use of Multi-Purpose Interconnectors to address the challenges.","PeriodicalId":347664,"journal":{"name":"The 17th International Conference on AC and DC Power Transmission (ACDC 2021)","volume":"73 10","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"113933170","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The performance of the BESS scheme is assessed under different network conditions. This will include a variety of network and BESS operational modes - such as grid connected BESS, islanded operation, incorporation of other downstream Distributed Generation (DG), and a temporary diesel generator – together with the transition between these modes. Practical BESS-based black start sequences will be considered with regard to feasibility transient studies and the impact on the network assets. This paper proposes the use of additional information from neighbouring lines around the same busbar in a multiple-input single-output (MISO) fault detection. Simulations results show that the protection's dependability and security margins are increased which is particularly useful for remote faults in long lines with small line inductors. A discussion on practical implementation taking into account possible intellectual property (IP) aspects is added. A MISO fault detection can be useful to overcome some of the uncertainties due to missing knowledge about implementation details.","PeriodicalId":347664,"journal":{"name":"The 17th International Conference on AC and DC Power Transmission (ACDC 2021)","volume":"18 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130993596","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
