Abstract
This paper presents an overview of the Resilience as a Service (RaaS) innovation project and the network modelling undertaken to investigate the technical feasibility of implementing a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) scheme to improve the reliability and security of supply of customers in rural areas. The performance of the BESS scheme is assessed under different network conditions. This will include a variety of network and BESS operational modes - such as grid connected BESS, islanded operation, incorporation of other downstream Distributed Generation (DG), and a temporary diesel generator – together with the transition between these modes. Practical BESS-based black start sequences will be considered with regard to feasibility transient studies and the impact on the network assets. In addition, the impact and synchronisation (reconnection to the main grid) sequences will be explored.
