Therefore, linguistic scientists have focused their research on identifying and studying new words associated with the pandemic. The article shows how the French vocabulary expanded as the new coronavirus infection and the disease associated with it spread, based on a study of publications on the websites of French online publications and French electronic dictionaries. It is noted that the definition of the gender of the word COVID is debatable, which in French is used in both the feminine and masculine genders, despite the fact that the French Academy has fixed the feminine version. Along with the debatable COVID, many new words have appeared in the French dictionary, and some existing words and expressions have expanded their semantic field. English terms related to the pandemic, which had no translation into French, were not always understood by many French speakers, so experts explained them and suggested adequate correspondences in French. The French dictionary revision organisations sought to provide a key to understanding the nuances of words, justifying the correctness and validity of their use. Along with the restrictive measures to prevent the spread of the coronavirus, many words and expressions have entered the French language, reflecting the ingenuity and inventiveness of the people to describe their daily lives in a time of restriction, isolation and online work. The article suggests that the process of enriching the vocabulary of the French language with specific terms and expressions will continue with the end of the pandemic. © 2022 Belgorod State National Research University. It measures mainly the accuracy and adequacy of Covid-19 terms translated by three popular MT tools between English and Indonesian. Data analysis is conducted manually through human evaluation toward translation products by using a translation rubric. The assessment includes several samples covering the level of words, sentences and paragraphs. All samples are purposively retrieved from the Coronavirus Corpus and are translated by using the three MT tools. Two raters are involved to analyze texts at sentence and paragraph levels. The raters are used to provide the credibility of translation texts analysis. Results showed that the three MT tools produce different language accuracy and adequacy in revealing COVID-19 terms. Translating noun and pronoun in particular context from English into Indonesian language still remains unclear. This may affect paragraph cohesion. Furthermore, even though these MT tools successfully translate a number of English words into Indonesian, several of the words cited are officially absent in the Great Indonesian Dictionary. This gap raises confusion for Indonesian readers whose English is not sufficient to understand the lexical meaning. In this case, the study highlights the importance of updating the words data base. As this article implements an evaluation translation method, the goal is to produce some recommendations that may be useful for several parties: reader of target language, MT's developer, linguist and government. © 2022 Minerva Obstetrics and Gynecology. The status of onomastic metaphors in the language according to cognitive-discursive approach is determined as a mental operation when an integral conceptual structure surrounded by context and activated in minds of native speakers is subject to metaphorical transformation. Research interest in onomastic metaphors is explained by the fact that proper names enter the personal space of each individual, act as cultural, historical and linguistic markers and participate in the process of conceptualization and reconceptualization of reality. The object of the study was 215 Russian and English mass media texts, the analysis of which showed that anthroponymic, toponymic and mythonymic types of onomastic metaphors are most frequently used in mass media discourse to conceptualize the period of the coronavirus pandemic. The analysis of different types of onyms used to represent the pandemic events allowed to reveal the quantitative ratio of onomastic metaphors in Russian and English media texts, where anthroponymic metaphors occupy 43%, toponymic metaphors 31% and mythonymic metaphors 26% of the total volume of metaphors found in the analyzed discourse. It has been established that the most common source areas in both Russian and English media discourse are famous names of real time, historical figures, literature characters, real and unreal places, mythological and religious personages. These names are the most significant for a person regardless of national and cultural affiliation, however, some national priorities in the choice of proper names used to describe the pandemic period can also be observed. It has also been found that fictional source spheres are more common both in Russian and English media discourse, which is a consequence of the creative nature of human thought. The powerful pragmatic potential of onomastic metaphors influencing the recipient’s value attitudes and contributing to stereotyping and assessment of the current situation in the public mind is emphasized. © 2022 Belgorod State National Research University. Most of the macro code solutions available online date back to the early 2000s. Given the fact, the researchers decided to look into the usefulness of the instrument in today's environment, which has changed significantly over the two decades. No matter how elaborate modern translating tools are, MS Word is still there, and time and again translators turn to it to convey various ideas to another language. Most specialists make do with what the designer built into the word processor, but there is a Developer tab they fail to notice. This is an opening, deliberately left by the developers to let users tap into the program and adjust it as needed. The authors go consistently from the analysis of existing codes, to writing their own based on the needs of today‟s translators and eventually to suggesting approaches for harnessing the tool to the translators‟ benefit. The ultimate proof of the value of translation-tailored VBA macros comes in the form of an experiment, built around the problem of converting measuring units in technical texts, a major translation challenge, particularly in the English-Russian pair of languages. The application of the code resulted in faster and more accurate calculations during the conversions, let alone better quality of the translated text. Not least important is that the translators now could focus on conveying the sense and idea, instead of switching between the MS Word window and numerous online/offline dictionaries, converters, corpora, etc., interrupting the string of their thoughts every time they came across numbers. This alone justifies taking the translator out of the loop when it comes to Gruzdev D. Yu., Dyomochkina V. V., Makarenko A. S. This paper aims to focus on media discourse, in particular on online news sites, and to explore the linguistic means of news actor labelling in news stories. The pragmatic value of some referring expressions used to name news actors in news media is further examined. The first part of the article provides a review of research on the “act of naming” in news discourse and the various linguistic resources utilized by writers for referring to news actors. The second part of the paper presents a case study that looks closely at the representations of news actors in news articles from online news sites of four British newspapers – The Guardian, The Independent, The Mirror, and The Sun. The results of the case study revealed various patterns of news actor labelling that are consistent with Jucker‟s (1996) classification. The study concludes that the journalist‟s preference for one referring expression over another in the news story has a powerful role in construing newsworthiness, in amplifying audience engagement, in influencing their perceptions of the news content, and in channeling their meaning construction process.","PeriodicalId":346928,"journal":{"name":"RESEARCH RESULT Theoretical and Applied Linguistics","volume":"73 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-12-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127199926","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
