The main objective of the survey is to specify and position the term \"identity\" within the epistemological space of the concepts of \"language\", \"culture\", \"personality\" in line with the dominant ideas of the social science. The purpose of the article is to outline and analyze the research into the concepts of \"identity\" and \"linguistic identity\" in the humanities and, particularly, in linguistics. An attempt is made to comprehend the epistemological foundations of a new linguistic identity. Modern scientific trends are viewed in terms of content oriented linguistics and cognitive science. The interdisciplinary potential of epistemology is considered crucial for modern linguistic and ethnolinguistic studies. Among the approaches to the study of identity are those of Shaposhnikova, Karasik, Kristeva, Charaudeau, Block, Pruvost and Paul-Laurent, Salimi and Abedi, Hentschel, Lagarde. It was found that behavior patterns, modal and nominative ways of reflecting reality are ethnically determined via language as well as the preferences of the communicating individual in accordance with the logic, semantics and pragmatics of discourse. The main idea of the article is that linguistic identity is, first of all, ethnolinguistic identity. In this perspective, linguistic identity is not a purely national category, but rather a mental representation, a way of thinking, a specific weltanschauung. In any case, what we are talking about is the selection of the optimal linguistic continuum within which individuals acts and identify themselves as personalities. The prospects for the application of the methodology of dominant identification tools in any type of language are outlined. Suggestions are made about the possibility of building up a new mainstream trend of study considering identity as an ethnolinguistic entity in terms of cognitive and discourse analyses.","PeriodicalId":346928,"journal":{"name":"RESEARCH RESULT Theoretical and Applied Linguistics","volume":"219 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-09-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126290159","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The authors attempt to study the features of the use and translation of language metaphor in economic media discourse. The research material was collected from the economic texts of the English and German online magazines and newspapers \"The Economist\", \"The Guardian\", \"The Times\", \" Der Spiegel\", \"Die Welt\", \"Focus Online\", \"Die Zeit\", \"Der Tagesspiegel\", «Leipziger Volkszeitung». The object of this study was 240 original English and German metaphors and their translations into Russian. The importance of the research is explained by the fact that a more thorough study of the features of the expressive means of a foreign language in the texts of a special discourse when performing professionally oriented translation is needed. A review of studies of metaphor in a special discourse is carried out, its structure, functions and semantic classifications in the texts of newspaper publications of an economic orientation are given. The authors point out the most frequent structural (verbal, substantive and adjectival) and semantic (anthropomorphic, nature-morphic, sociomorphic and artifact) classifications of metaphors of this type of publicistic discourse. The results of a comparative analysis of translations of English and German metaphors in economic media articles into Russian are presented in the article. The authors note that in most cases, in the texts of a special discourse, it is possible to transmit a metaphorical image of a foreign language lexical unit by means of the Russian language. The authors draw a conclusion that the successful transfer of foreign language means of expression into Russian in this type of text requires not only the use of the translator's technical arsenal, but also a creative approach to the translation of the studied linguistic phenomenon.","PeriodicalId":346928,"journal":{"name":"RESEARCH RESULT Theoretical and Applied Linguistics","volume":"68 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-09-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126325985","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This article aims to study conscience in the Russian and French languages. Conscience refers to the socially regulatory concepts studied by various scientists, including psychologists, philosophers and philologists. In order to determine national specifics of the semantics of the concept “conscience” in Russian and French we use a comparative analysis of the semantic relations between conscience, shame and consciousness in both languages. Modern dictionaries of the Russian language define conscience as a feeling of moral responsibility to oneself and others for one's actions. Responsibility to others brings conscience closer to shame, which acts as a companion of conscience in many aspects of the Russian language. Nevertheless, only socialized conscience can act as a synonym for shame. Dictionary definitions highlight sensual and rational principles in shame. The sensual principle brings shame closer to conscience, the rational principle – to consciousness. Russian lexicographic sources do not record any connection between conscience and consciousness. The analysis of French dictionaries shows that in the “conscience-consciousness” doublet, expressed by one lexeme conscience, consciousness is the dominant. The analysis of synonyms of the French lexeme conscience proves that the lexeme honte (shame) is not synonymous with the lexeme conscience. This statement is proved by the analysis of parallel texts from the National Corpus of the Russian language. The lack of semantic links between shame and conscience in French lexicographic sources can be explained by a more individual character of conscience in the French language compared to the Russian one.","PeriodicalId":346928,"journal":{"name":"RESEARCH RESULT Theoretical and Applied Linguistics","volume":"28 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-09-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123743354","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This markup is performed automatically using RFTagger. Since the texts of the corpus are written by students, they may contain various kinds of errors: grammatical, spelling, stylistic, and others. Sentences may be formulated incorrectly, without taking into account the rules of the language and accepted norms. This can affect the work of programs that process texts in automatic mode, and as a result, generate incorrect tagging that needs to be verified manually. The purpose of the study is to investigate the degree of influence of various kinds of errors in non-authentic texts on the results of the automatic part-of-speech tagging. Based on expert error markup in the corpus texts, 11 types of errors were identified that affect the part-of-speech tagger quality. For each type of error, ten sentences containing an error were selected from the corpus. The resulting pool of texts was processed by the part-of-speech taggers RFTagger and TreeTagger. The parts of speech that were suggested by these automatic taggers were compared with the parts of speech determined by experts manually. As a result of the comparison, the following patterns were revealed: part-of-speech taggers are mistaken when writing the non-declinable form of the adjective instead of the declinable; when writing one word separately; in the absence of the suffix \"-er\" in possessive adjectives formed from geographical names; when writing nouns with a lowercase letter; when writing a verb with a capital letter. For each case, the article provides an analysis of the forms and causes of incorrect POS-tagging, as well as differences in the work of the two part-of-speech taggers. Taking into account the revealed patterns will allow more efficient organization of the POS-tagging verification in the learner corpus in German. The results of the study will also be useful for developers of part-of-speech taggers.","PeriodicalId":346928,"journal":{"name":"RESEARCH RESULT Theoretical and Applied Linguistics","volume":"14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-09-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114303392","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the current work, we address the gaze behavior as contingent on figurative language construal in two participants’ groups with different amount of working memory. We verify the hypothesis that apart from metaphor types, novel and entrenched, gaze behavior is affected by metaphor construal patterns, here described as parameters. The study specifies the cognitive parameters of Referent construal, Event Frame construal, Perspective construal, and the linguistic parameters of graphological, lexical and syntactic construal. Regression analysis reveals several predictors of steady decrease and increase of the gaze costs within two participant groups. The participants with better working memory display higher gaze costs when the construal lacks action or dynamics; whereas the participants with worse working memory are affected by both linguistic and cognitive construal parameters including Clause-initial position for contrastive focus, Lexical synonyms and antonyms, Spontaneous or occasional event, Lack of action or dynamics. We also identified the predictors which decrease the gaze costs; the participants with worse working memory are affected by Perception (Event type), Shifting / changing, Agentive participant, Intensifiers in pre-position. Overall, the participants with worse working memory pay more attention to linguistic construal of metaphors, presumably, it creates additional affordances for metaphor construal; at the same time lower dynamicity in the cognitive construal produces higher gaze costs in both groups. The study shows that irrespective of the metaphor type, several construal patterns produce consistent gaze costs, either increased or decreased.","PeriodicalId":346928,"journal":{"name":"RESEARCH RESULT Theoretical and Applied Linguistics","volume":"68 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-09-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124920703","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Most of the works devoted to synonymy have been carried out within the framework of the systemocentric approach. This study tries to solve the problem: it studies synonymy in anthropocentric and cognitive aspects and it allows revising the traditional approach. The article aims to describe the cognitive bases of the synonymous similarity of different categories of Russian nouns. The linguistic materials for research are: 1) two psycholinguistic experiments (426 participants); 2) Russian National Corpus; 3) Russian dictionaries; 4) publications in the media. In the first experiment, subjects suggested synonyms for the stimuli; in the second experiment native speakers explained the meaning of the stimuli. The hypothesis is that logical and situational foundations create semantic proximity in the native speaker’s lexicon. The research has shown that the hypothesis was confirmed. According to the logical basis, the semantic similarity of synonyms is the result of the coincidence of most of the semantic components identified by using logical procedures: synonyms have the same core semantic components. This base is typical for object nouns. For situational basis, the semantic proximity is associated with the ability of synonyms to express similar situations from the point of native speaker’s view. The situation is understood broadly as a fragment of reality (scene) in which objects – people, objects, non-objective entities – are in certain relationships with each other. This basis is realized primarily for abstract nouns and personal names. The distinguished bases cannot always be clearly distinguished, especially for polysemantic words. Depending on the category of nouns and communicative strategy a native speaker can refine the meaning, using synonyms, or neutralize the differences between synonyms.","PeriodicalId":346928,"journal":{"name":"RESEARCH RESULT Theoretical and Applied Linguistics","volume":"39 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114165240","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The reported study was funded by RFBR and DFG, project number № 21-512-12002 ННИО_а “Prognostic methods and future scenarios in language policy – multilingual Russia as an example”. Abstract. This interdisciplinary article is written at the intersection of ethnography of language policy and language economy – a science, underestimated both by (socio)linguists and economists. It aims to identify whether the competence in a minority language affects people's income taking the example of one of the regions of the Russian Federation – the Republic of Tatarstan. The data were collected in October 2021 through a sociolinguistic survey, interviewing, and ethnographic observation. The empirical analysis revealed the absence of a positive correlation between the income of the majority of respondents and their knowledge of the Tatar language. At the same time, for a third of the respondents such knowledge brings both direct and indirect benefits, from establishing business and personal contacts with the Turkic-speaking world to employment opportunities and part-time jobs in the areas where knowledge of Tatar is necessary. The negative relationship between the Tatar language proficiency and income is primarily due to the state language policy and legislation of the country aimed at promoting the Russian language. Overall, the study concludes that the economic value of minority languages remains low and that there are different types of arguments for language choice. The choice of a minority language is motivated by the importance of language for culture and ethnic identity, while the choice of a dominant language is motivated by economic and pragmatic arguments (soft arguments vs. hard arguments). The importance of the monetary component in people’s language decisions allows making a rather pessimistic forecast about the future of minority languages.","PeriodicalId":346928,"journal":{"name":"RESEARCH RESULT Theoretical and Applied Linguistics","volume":"169 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133540391","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We study materials of MirVracha published in summer 2020 – winter 2021 (dataset includes more than 0.5 million words). We reveal dominant semantic categories of online medical professional discourse and examine the dynamic of topics discussed in the publications against the backdrop of the pandemic situation and social events. The dominant semantic categories of online medical professional discourse during the COVID-19 pandemic are the Diagnosis and Research categories. Based on the results of discourse analysis, we describe the interests and attitudes of the portal users and linguistic means they use to verbalize their attitudes within the professional community. The medical professionals are primarily interested in research materials and outcomes. Based on sentiment analysis, we uncover attitudes revealed in the publications. Medical professional CMC shows mainly neutral attitudes to the topics.
