In the application the purity of the ion beam is very important, however, the purity of conventional PIB is very poor. To improve the purity a new type of PIB accelerator named \"bipolar pulse accelerator (BPA)\" is proposed. The accelerator consists of two acceleration gaps (first gap and post acceleration gap) and a drift tube placed between the gaps. High power bipolar pulse is applied to the drift tube to accelerate ions. In the accelerator intended ions are selectively accelerated and the purity of the ion beam is enhanced. As the first step of the development of the accelerator, magnetically insulated acceleration gap is developed. The gap has an ion source of coaxial gas puff plasma gun on the grounded anode and a negative pulse is applied to the cathode to accelerate ions. By using the plasma gun, ion source plasma (nitrogen plasma) of current density around 100 A/cm/sup 2/ is produced, which is injected to the anode. After the plasma injection, negative pulse of voltage 220 kV, duration 60 ns is applied to the cathode. In the paper, preliminary results of the experiment are described including the waveforms of the system and shadowgraph measurement. From the results principle of the acceleration of ion beam in the BPA is confirmed.","PeriodicalId":339166,"journal":{"name":"Conference Record of the Twenty-Fifth International Power Modulator Symposium, 2002 and 2002 High-Voltage Workshop.","volume":"85 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2002-06-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117152761","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A prototype solid-state kicker pulser capable of generating asynchronous bursts of 50 kV pulses has been designed and tested into a 50 /spl Omega/ load. The pulser features fast rise and fall times and is capable of generating an arbitrary pattern of pulses with a maximum burst frequency exceeding 5 MHz. If required, the pulse-width of each pulse in the burst is independently adjustable. This kicker modulator uses multiple solid-state modules stacked in an inductive-adder configuration where the energy is switched into each section of the adder by a parallel array of MOSFETs. Test data, capabilities, and limitations of the prototype pulser are described.","PeriodicalId":339166,"journal":{"name":"Conference Record of the Twenty-Fifth International Power Modulator Symposium, 2002 and 2002 High-Voltage Workshop.","volume":"18 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2002-06-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127484774","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Mean power is 80 kW, output voltage instability-less than 1%. Pulse length and load current can be varied in a wide range without any essential modification of the modulator structure. CW mode of operation can be realized too. The modulator consists of primary solid states regulator and output pulse former based on a new power vacuum triode. Two-loops stabilization and feed-forward control are used. Charging voltage is fixed with primary regulator assistance and flattop of the pulse-with the tube. It provides high efficiency of the modulator and gradually decreases the energy stored at the high voltage stage. Auxiliary systems for the klystron's filament and other consumers can be installed if necessary. Combination of new schematic decisions and use of modern switches satisfies the high requirements of the microwave generator supply.","PeriodicalId":339166,"journal":{"name":"Conference Record of the Twenty-Fifth International Power Modulator Symposium, 2002 and 2002 High-Voltage Workshop.","volume":"62 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2002-06-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125378428","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Application of a high voltage pulse causes a shift in the electron energy distribution function to higher energies. This causes a temporary increase of the ionization rate and consequently an increase of the electron density. The electron density after a 10 ns pulse application to a direct current glow discharge increased from its DC value of 2 10/sup 13/ cm/sup -3/ to 2.8 10/sup 15/ cm/sup -3/. The average power density, required for sustaining the high pressure plasma with a given minimum electron density, was found to be lowered when the discharge was operated in a repetitive pulsed mode compared to a DC mode. For an atmospheric pressure air plasma, an average power density of 1.5 kw/cm/sup 3/ and 50 w/cm/sup 3/ is required for an average electron density of 10/sup 13/ cm/sup -3/ and 10/sup 12/ cm/sup -3/, respectively. This value is less by a factor of three than that required to sustain a DC plasma with the same base electron density.","PeriodicalId":339166,"journal":{"name":"Conference Record of the Twenty-Fifth International Power Modulator Symposium, 2002 and 2002 High-Voltage Workshop.","volume":"12 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2002-06-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122386932","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The large magnet window size, large deflecting angle, low beam impedance termination and fast deflecting field rise time demand a very strong pulsed power source to drive the SNS extraction fast kicker magnet. This system consists of fourteen high voltage modulators and fourteen lumped kicker magnet sections. All modulators will be located in a service building outside the beam tunnel, which is a revised design requirement adopted in the mid 2000. The high current pulses generated by the high power modulators will be delivered through high voltage pulsed transmission cables to each kicker magnet sections. We investigated the dependence of the discharge power and the polarity of applied pulsed voltage to the reactor on the removal rate of SF/sub 6/. The discharge power is varied with discharge repetition rate or charging voltage of the capacitor. As the discharge power increases, the removal rate of SF/sub 6/ is increases. The high repetition rate of pulse is more effective for removal of SF/sub 6/ than the big value of charging voltage. When the same discharge energy is supplied to the sample gas by changing the residence time or repetition rate, the removal rate is high in short residence time and high repetition rate. The removal rate of SF/sub 6/ for negative pulses is higher than that for positive ones. Consequently, the nonthermal plasma generated by pulsed power is effective to remove dilute SF/sub 6/ gas completely.","PeriodicalId":339166,"journal":{"name":"Conference Record of the Twenty-Fifth International Power Modulator Symposium, 2002 and 2002 High-Voltage Workshop.","volume":"81 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2002-06-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124127042","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

For the preliminary pulse compression, the magnetic pulse compression system was employed. The saturable inductors and transformers transferred the stored electrical energy from the primary storage capacitor to the SOS compressing the pulse. For the final stage of the generator, the SOS was used. By tuning the current fed to the SOS, the amplitude and pulse duration of the generated voltage at the 300-/spl Omega/ resistive load were 150 kV and 60 ns, respectively. Also, general-purpose fast-recovery diodes (FRD) were tested from the viewpoint of the potential candidate as the SOS. The properties of two diodes, of which the reverse recovery time is 100 ns, were tested and found to be enough good as an opening switch. Combining WC and SOS pulse compression scheme, pulsed voltage of 50 kV in amplitude and 20 ns in FWHM is obtained from the relatively low charging voltage of 1.4 kV, which can be repetitively ignited by a semiconductor closing switch.","PeriodicalId":339166,"journal":{"name":"Conference Record of the Twenty-Fifth International Power Modulator Symposium, 2002 and 2002 High-Voltage Workshop.","volume":"34 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2002-06-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128931514","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Improvements in mechanical modulus or heat deflection temperature are often realized. These fillers may also increase some electrical properties such as corona endurance in polymers. Polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) loaded polymers are tested for corona endurance.
