These corona and PD activities may become major design problems for space power systems. The corona or partial discharge initiation is a function of several design and environmental parameters. The most important factors can be listed as the operation pressure, the electrode geometry, and the frequency and voltage level of the applied power within a power system. In this work we have reviewed the literature data that can be readily implemented in the design of these power systems, and we have studied the breakdown at kHz frequencies. Initial studies conducted in the laboratory suggest that the corona breakdown voltage levels at high frequency are indeed much lower than the DC breakdown voltages for varying pressures. The data obtained in the laboratory is also presented. In this work frequency effects on the breakdown voltage of helium at frequencies between 10 kHz and 45 kHz are investigated.","PeriodicalId":339166,"journal":{"name":"Conference Record of the Twenty-Fifth International Power Modulator Symposium, 2002 and 2002 High-Voltage Workshop.","volume":"60 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2002-06-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124313512","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This scheme is studied as a pulse shaping scheme for very high pressure and isentropic compression in material and as a power amplification scheme for X ray production. Experiments have been done in two different regimes: 100 ns, 15 MA pulse on the Z generator at Sandia and 1 /spl mu/s, 3 MA pulse on the ECF generator at CEG. A summary of the shots on Z, as well as on ECF is given. For example, 5 Mbar as a shock, more than 2 Mbar in isentropic compression in a copper sample have been achieved on the Z generator using flux compression. Comparisons between simulations and experiments are presented. They allow us to tune the codes in order to predict the experimental results and improve our physical understanding of the scheme.","PeriodicalId":339166,"journal":{"name":"Conference Record of the Twenty-Fifth International Power Modulator Symposium, 2002 and 2002 High-Voltage Workshop.","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2002-06-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117338405","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

For industrial applications, such as pulsed corona processing, a long lifetime, high repetition rate, high efficiency and high reliability are required. At the Ioffe Institute, an unconventional switching mechanism has been found, based on the very fast recovery process in a silicon p/sup +/p'nn/sup +/ diode. This paper describes the application of such a 'drift-step recovery diode' for high-power pulsed corona plasma generation. The principle of the diode-based nanosecond pulse generator is discussed in detail. The generator is coupled to a wire-plate corona reactor via a transmission-line-transformer, which has the following advantages: (i) increase of the output voltage, (ii) impedance transformation to improve the matching with the reactor, (iii) protection of the switch against reflections and mismatches, (iv) limitation of the switch current during short-circuit or breakdowns, and (v) easy coupling with a DC-bias voltage. The developed circuit has been tested at both a matched resistive load and a wire-plate pulsed corona reactor. Various ways to improve the matching with the reactor have been evaluated. We found that superposition of the pulse on a DC-bias voltage gives the best result. For example: without DC-bias, more than 50% of the energy-per-pulse reflects back to the source. However, the reflected energy could be reduced to <15% when using a DC-bias voltage of 25 kV.","PeriodicalId":339166,"journal":{"name":"Conference Record of the Twenty-Fifth International Power Modulator Symposium, 2002 and 2002 High-Voltage Workshop.","volume":"16 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2002-06-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128505454","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The lifetime and the reliability of the system are major difficulties to realize this newly developed technology because the downtime for maintenance affects the plant availability. The combination of a high power solid-state switch with a magnetic pulse compressor (MPC) is a suitable scheme to meet these requirements. An average 120-kW MPC modulator has been constructed and tested with a plasma reactor for an industrial incinerator plant. The plasma reactor has wire-plate electrodes and can treat the gas of 50000 Nm/sup 3//Hr. This modulator can generate 150 kV pulses with 500 nsec (FWHM) pulse width, and 300 Hz repetition rate. This paper presents design details and the operational characteristics of the MPC modulator.","PeriodicalId":339166,"journal":{"name":"Conference Record of the Twenty-Fifth International Power Modulator Symposium, 2002 and 2002 High-Voltage Workshop.","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2002-06-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129800878","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

If the switch cathode is coated, the tunneling of electrons from amorphic diamond to GaAs during the off-state stage of PCSS operation provides pre-avalanche sites that diffuse conduction current upon switch activation. On the other hand, diamond coating of the switch anode results in increased hold-off characteristics and longer switch lifetimes by blocking the leakage current. In this case the rectifying behavior of the amorphic diamond/GaAs heterojunction operating under reverse bias condition inhibits the conduction until very high fields are reached. This report presents the progress toward improving the high pin switch operation and lifetime in stacked Blumlein pulsers. The switch design options that make optimal use of amorphic diamond coatings for long life operations of avalanche PCSS are given and discussed.","PeriodicalId":339166,"journal":{"name":"Conference Record of the Twenty-Fifth International Power Modulator Symposium, 2002 and 2002 High-Voltage Workshop.","volume":"135 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2002-06-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127550705","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The large current was supplied to the foil sandwiched with Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/ tiles using storage capacitor which was charged up to several kVs. The Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/ tiles were successfully bonded when the charged voltage in the capacitor was same value with the energy required for vaporization of the titanium foils. The bonding strength increases with energy input to the foil. The bonding also increases from 600 to 1250 N shear strength with increasing compression stress on the Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/ tiles from 1.1 to 4.2 MPa at use of 5 mm width titanium foil as the interlayer. An investigation of the interfacial structure of the joints using electron probe micro-analysis revealed that distinct reaction areas existed in the interlayers.","PeriodicalId":339166,"journal":{"name":"Conference Record of the Twenty-Fifth International Power Modulator Symposium, 2002 and 2002 High-Voltage Workshop.","volume":"30 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2002-06-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131300622","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Compared to electroporation pulses, new pulse power technology generates non-thermal pulses with shorter durations and higher electric fields (nsPEF) such that the charging time of the plasma membrane is not reached, but subcellular membranes and intracellular functions are affected independent of heating. Here we investigated nsPEF-induced programmed cell death (apoptosis) in intact human cells with pulse durations between 10-300 nanoseconds over a range of electric field intensities and energy densities. nsPEF effects are observed on the plasma membrane integrity and caspase activation using fluorescent markers, flow cytometry, biochemical assays. The results indicate that once a critical electric field intensity threshold is reached, nsPEF-induced apoptosis is dependent on the pulse duration and is independent of the electric field intensity. Relatively long pulses (300 ns), which have greater plasma membrane effects and lesser intracellular effects, recruit apoptosis mechanisms that rapidly advance through apoptosis to loss of membrane integrity in minutes. Shorter pulses (10 ns), which have greater intracellular effects and lesser plasma membrane effects, induce apoptosis, but require longer times (tens of minutes to hours). We conclude that nsPEF-induced apoptosis does not require plasma membrane effects related to electroporation. nsPEF affect a continuum of cellular mechanisms from the plasma membrane to intracellular targets. Longer pulses recruit multiple and perhaps synergistic pathways while shorter pulses recruit more time-dependent pathways. These studies promote a better understand of the effects of nsPEF on basic functions during cellular responses to intrinsic and extrinsic stresses and suggest the potential for nsPEF applications for therapeutic purposes.","PeriodicalId":339166,"journal":{"name":"Conference Record of the Twenty-Fifth International Power Modulator Symposium, 2002 and 2002 High-Voltage Workshop.","volume":"24 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2002-06-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115320252","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The treatment chamber consists of two parallel metal plates with the separation of 2.2 mm and an insulating housing, made of PTFE. A 30 /spl Omega/ Blumlein generator with a low inductance spark gap switch delivers square wave voltage pulses of 45 ns duration to the electrodes of the bacterial treatment chamber. The parameters varied for this study were the resistivity of the medium and the risetime of the pulse. PEF was found to be more effective in media with low resistivity. The risetime, which was varied from 2 ns (f<200 MHz) to 20 ns (f<50 MHz), determines the high frequency components in the Fourier spectrum of the pulse. With pulses of different rise time, but same total energy, the pulse with short rise time kills bacteria more effectively. These results indicate that the high frequency components in PEF deposit the electrical energy in the cell and affect intracellular structures.","PeriodicalId":339166,"journal":{"name":"Conference Record of the Twenty-Fifth International Power Modulator Symposium, 2002 and 2002 High-Voltage Workshop.","volume":"21 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2002-06-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116560213","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
